Hiya all,

As the title says, I've just played my first online game. I was England, my friend the Romans. He said he just 'dug out' his Civ 4 complete edition, so I thought he would need a refresh of how to play.

We played as one whole team, not against each other. He wanted to conquer so I set up the game as victory conquest/domination.

We got into the game and built up. We started as neighbors, with Japan north of us. He wanted to attack so I sent a stack of troops out to attack and was wiped clean. About 20 turns later he tried and had success after success with battle. I couldn't believe my eyes and he just said 'its easy, just like Civ 3'.

I was . Okay, he had his UU I'll admit but come off it, he ate through city after city like a starving man.

I need to get to know promotions and combat a lot better.:crazyeye:

Well, no other civ gets the equivalent of macemen city raiders with just iron working. Of course they just run riot through cities if you have a decent stack of them.

sounds like a cracking game the two of you had!
Dude, unit upgrades are the worst...last game i spent the entirety of it building up to upgrading musketeers to grenadiers...i had a whole stack of 25 ready WITH the cash in the bank...
what happens, i cant upgrade, going the long route back to rifling cost me the game...
d'oh!
there is always something to learn.

Raise the difficulty. What level was you guys on? I remember someone saying settler and cheiftan was basically just a game of poinless clicking since you dont really learn anything. Step it up a few notches, like, noble. See how "easy" it can be.

Yes, I put it on chieftain as I thought he (my friend) couldn't remember how to play. Just shows how wrong I was!

Don't feel bad. Praetorians are pretty unstoppable. I am pretty much Monarch player, but I feel I would certainly get beat if I played against Noble players who used the Romans before - i.e. know that all they have to do is build a force of Praets asap and overwhelm me in every sense of that word. Only if I use Native America or Mali, I may have a realistic chance to defend their attacks. The only reliable way to kill the Romans is to attack very early before they have/connect iron.
