I've never had a problem, ever. Before I got a memory upgrade Civ/BTS ran a little slow in the late game and with leaderheads, but upping my machine to 2 GB solved that nicely. One thing I do, personally, is that I turn off the gadget bar when I play. Vista is very memory intensive so the more RAM you can give to the game and the less the OS has to swap out to the HD when running really improves things. Also make sure all of your drivers are up to date, especially video. That's the best advice I can give you. Now go out and ruin some leader's day. ;)

Why on earth would you want to do that? There's no real advantage in going with Vista right now, wait until you get your first DirectX 10 or 64 bit game. Or do what I'm planning and set up a dual-boot system. XP works just fine for all the games and programs I have right now, but I would like to be able to use the Media Centre that comes with Vista Home Edition.

they say vista uses memory more wisely but thats all i know about vista other than it having tons of bugs or something??

Readyboost is a nice addition I have a 4 gig Flash stick working as ram ontop of my regular 4 gigs of ram.

thats about it. That and Dx10

My computer came with Vista. As long as it works, i dont care. But ya it works fine.

However the PC only came with 512 MB RAM so I upgraded it to 2GB for this and some other games. (Only cost $45!)

w8 w8 w8 so i'm only 32 bit but does it matter. Off-topic, civ 4 won't play after i reformated my pc from xp to xp not to vista is there any reason for this because pre-formated civ 4 was doing fine.

With 32 bit Vista, there's no difference in the way it uses memory. It will only recognize up to 4 gig of RAM and each application can only use up to 2 gigs for itself. With 64 bit Vista, you no longer have those limitations and you can access up to 128 meg of RAM, with no limits for any applications up to that amount. However the program has to be written specifically for an 64 bit OS or it won't benefit from the increased memory. And so far there's very few 64 bit programs written, especially games. Civ 4 is a 32 bit program so even if you had a 64 bit OS, it will still run the game in 32 bit mode, and so no memory benefits.

Is this the thread i gripe about MS VISVA: :gripe:?

It works.. horribly slow. If i would still be as nerdy as i used to be, i would install linux/transgaming and xp on this laptop i use currently and make an comparison how the game works on different platforms (just a guess - VISTA is the slowest one;)).

Nowadays i'm just lazy and use VISVA. :(

The only problem I had with Vista 32-bit that doesn't occur now that I've reverted back to XP (dual-boot, but Vista side is pretty much left unused unless there is some game that is 10 million times better in DX10 than DX9 - Zero so far), is that the game would occasionally hang when playing MP with a friend and require a reboot as Vista is really crap at force-killing hung programs unlike XP. I had no problems in SP though.

Duo 2.0 + 256MB + 4GB + 320GB + Vista = 5.3 points
Duo 2.0 + 256MB + 4GB + 320GB + XP = Over 8.0 points
Duo 2.0 + 256MB + 4GB + 320GB + 2000 Pro = Over 9.0 points
Buy XP or 2000 and Install it! It's much better than VISTA. You dont need VISTA to play BTS. XP and 2000 are enough!
DX10 is better than DX9, I know! But, 4GB of RAM with DX9 is better than 2GB with DX10. Think! Think! Dont be silly!

I got an Acer Aspire 5520. Right now I am playing with the huge earth map at max settings. It plays ok, but after an hour I see a slow down. After two or so hours I exit reboot laptop, turn, wireless modem off, so I can turn anti virus off and everything else.

Just in the middle age, so I guess it will be getting alot slower. My next game will be on a smaller map so I can see if there is a difference between huge and large.

Map size = RAM

Have installed all 2 expansions with no problems uses nvida graphics.

Vista on the plus side will see lots of updates compared to xp which eventually will die away as window 7 comes out in 2009 or 2010.

Knowing MS it will be 2011. Just install and make sure you run as administrator.

If you can't run CIV IV On Vista its obvious your computer is not good enough to be using Vista.

my comp i think is good enough with 2GB, 8600 iChill, 2.59GHz and dual core. Is this good enough and does civ 4 slow down on vista?

You don't have enough memory for Huge maps. Vista will use almost 1 gig all by itself and you should have 2 gig free for that map size.

Service Pack 1 brought a huge performance increase to Vista. Make sure its installed. XP is still slightly faster, but the difference is minimal.

And I'd consider minimum RAM for Vista (for a gamer) to be 3gb.

He has enough RAM to run it, but does he have the patience for it? ;)

I agree. 1~2GB for Vista OS and the others are for applications. That means 4GB is required. That's why almost all of PC have 3~4GB of RAM.

You mean he'll have enough RAM to crawl it, not run it. He'll probably be fine for about half the game then it will slow to a crawl the second half.
