im curious about this because i don't think im ready to make my 4 cities into a colony because they don't have vital resources such as oil and iron etc. So im wondering cause i think i saw that the colony and the master share resources???

They don't. A colony is always willing to trade resources to the master civ (i.e. they are not allowed to red out any in the diplomacy panel), but that's it.
