I just got 8 in a normal speed game. That's my best so far. Just wondering what everyone else has had.

I've had like 10 great generals ravaging entire enemy civilizations in marathon games.

I mostly get like 2-5, depends on how quick and how aggressive I play.

I think you need to play huge maps with 11+ civs to get a decent amount. Helps being imperialist too. I can get 5+ on a huge map. to be honest i never really count.

Playing the Romans or Persians certainly would be a huge boost.

Sometimes if you take out a stack of 40-60 units you can get 2+ great generals. Just teching ahead of the Ai till end of the game should ensure 1 GG.

I would guess anyone playing the big earth mod with 18 civs would be doing well on this front.

Imperialistic + great wall + always war = many GG.
Fight defensively and they will just multiply, with as many civs and as high of difficulty as you can survive it can be insane.
I once rigged a game that I had a few cities blocked by mountains, with a single forested hill that all enemies had to cross.
The biggest problem was getting finding civs so they could attack (scouting units got butchered by nearby civs).

Managed to get 9 once in a normal map/game at standard speed with an imperialist and the great wall, oh that includes the free one from fascism.

Does stealing settled GG's count? In one game i managed to get 6 settled GG over 4 cities from another two civs.

I just got 2 great generals in the same turn in my latest game: one in my capital, and one in my Heroic Epic city.

I'm on my first game; I've had 4 so far. Produced a military academy with one of them

i have had 4 GG, settled them all in my coastal capital (von oranje) then with theoc, and vassalage... +12 EXP, and barracks/drydocks/airport...

At the point, i just quit the game because i wasn't having much fun.

Wanna know what is fun?

Building an island of barbarians with 20 barb GG units, and setting them up with the world-leading techs, WB them scotland yards, jails and security buildings to avoid espionage...

and the fun will really begin when their "super pirate ship destroyers" hit the board

I had over a dozen as JC on a huge, marathon game with only military victories (and diplo for flavour) turned on. I can't remeber the exact number, but it was quite large.

yea im kind of a ruthless yet passive player. so i'll build and build until a neighbor gets angry and invades me. in which i turn into a war machine and burn him into the ground.
rarely vassalizing unless they got a random island city somewhere. or colonies eelsehwere.
by doing that i'll get about 8-12 gg which i will settle in one city.
commando tanks ftw!!!!

Last game using imperialist leader clocked 11-12 great leaders before victory was mine. This was using a terra map.

Well, in my OCC AW Marathon Diety game with certain...liberties, I've gotten about 6 or so pre-CoL, but in normal games, 3-4.

IMP w GW:

Settled 7 GG's (w Theocracy & Vassalage). also made a couple military acad w warlord or 2.

IDK the total number of GG's that game, but it was about in the high teens.

I just finished a game prince, russians, earth (huge), 18 civs, normal speed.

11 great generals. I just posted a screenshot illustrated narrative of this game in a top level thread called "Russia on Earth, 18 civs, almost cheating?"

Here's the great person screen at the end though...

I got really lucky in this game, though, I had lots of technologically backwards people attacking me. It was fun to see them attacking my mechanized infantry with cat's. Quick GG points!

I also conquered the Great Wall about half-way through.

I have 5 right now in an Epic Tectonics game, and only in 1700 AD. Funnily enough, I didn't get one GG until 1300 AD. Really good game, ended up founding a religion and 5 vs 1 with the 6 civs on my continent, so once that loner died there was no war for 4000 years... Now we're all allied up and crushing the other islands =D

most I ever had was 14 because I got lucky and took a great wall from the first neighbor I rushed. <3 I attached every one to my major military city other than one GG I attached to a unit.

I almost asked this same question a week ago. I had 8 Great Generals in a Marathon game, and left a couple of them just sitting around collecting dust.

Definiately 20+ with an imperialistic leader on marathon (game was over before modern era, could've gone for more). Best way to farm GG is get a Warlord led Super stack going. Get your strongest infantry with combat line, march and CR line. Get a warlord medic III with Woodsman III and 3+ Warlord with the previous line of promos and morale and that's a marching blitzkreig. (it used to be more effective when you could have combat on artillery and put warlords on those. That way you could bring super strong art along to soften the defenses)

In our current game, we are around 10, though if you include all the great gens we caputered as instructures, that would be closer to 25 or 30 :D

At least 63, that's when I lost count. Sticking 10 cannons in a stack protected by a Riflemen and just attacking your opponent's weak units with >99% chance odds = 10 XP per turn per stack, roughly.

Nets about 100 XP per turn, if you're only at war with a few people.

Creating Commando Riflemen out of the box is wicked.

im up to 7 right now and havent fought a war beyond muskets. I'm playing as cyrus who is a war machine beast from the get go. rolling out level 4 units from 2 cities (now 4 cities since I've conquered 2 with 3 GG's in them) is sick.

However that will send your WW through the roof jerry (+1/combat retreat i believe), so if you are going to follow that tactic you pretty much must be in police state with mt rushmore and jails all round (unless all these cannon battles are fought on your soil)

I got about 12 in 10 turns in multiplayer earlier this week.
settings were the classic 6 player Pangea (small) quick speed. It had come down to the final 2..he hit me with everything he had. As luck had it i had built the great wall (mainly for the cheap spy points more than anything tbh)..the double gg generation combined with the massive stacks of units moving around my territory meant i got GGs pretty quick.. in fact there did come a time when i didnt really have much use for them, i certainly remember one city of mine turning out collateral3 catapults with drill 1..which was actually a really funky promotion for suicide cats since they were up against musketmen.
edit: ps i appreciate it is considerably easier to achieve GG's in such a scenario, a gg feels muchmore worth it on the single player epic/marathon speeds
