On the Western Front
This story is based on my Work In Progress WWI Future, which is not yet completed. Stay tuned ;)

On the Western Front: Intro-

The year is 2011. Almost a hundred years have past since the start of the war in 1914. After the assasination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, the heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne, the Kingdom of Serbia was blamed for the incident. With Austria-Hungary threatening retaliation, Germany pledged full support to the Austro-Hungarions, while France, England, and Russia aided Serbia.

Europe seemed on the brink of war. Finally, Austria-Hungary sent a declaration of war to the Kingdom of Serbia and hostilities broke out. This fighting activated a chain reaction that caused the alliances of Serbia and the alliances of Austria-Hungary to declare war on one another. Within weeks, much of Europe was in a state of open warfare.

Back in the United States, 50 years earlier, a civil war ripped the nation apart, the south called themseles the Confederate Sates of America, and were led by President Jefferson Davis. The North stayed the United States of America and had their head of state called President Lincoln. After a couple of grueling years of fighting, the Confederates claimed victory, and broke away from the United States. Later, when WWI started, the United States sided with the newly strong Germany, while the Confederate States joined their longtime allies, Britain and France.

The Central Powers consisted of Germany, Bulgaria, the United States, the Ottoman Empire, and Austria-Hungary. The Entente Powers consisted of United Kingdom, Russia, France, the Confederate States, and Italy. However, Netherlands, Switzerland, Spain, and all Scandinavian Countries remained nuetral during the Early Parts of the War.

As these superpowers battled, Europe became a wastland as shell after shell came crashing down on the landscape. New Technologies were researched such as poison gas, airplanes, and trench warfare. Later during the war, motorized vehicles and sugmachine guns were also researched. During the beginning of the second half of the war, the developement of nuclear weapons took place as well as new massive bombers that carried enough ordinance to wipe out an entire metropolis. Smart weapons were developed, as well as jet engines and stealth. Now, many people cannot remember a time when there was no warfare. Hundreds of millions of people have died fighting in the war, on the western front...

Somewhere on the Western Front...

"Take cover!" Someone shouted from outside the bunker. The screaming of an artillery shell sounded in Sam's ears, and he threw himself on the ground. BOOM! The shell crashed into another bunker not 500 meters away. The bunker disintegrated from the impact, and what was left burst into flame. He could hear people screaming outside. That could have been me, went through his head. As another shell screamed down and impacted he thought Damn. The barrage started. He stayed on the ground and covered his helmeted head until the barrage stopped, which felt like an eternity, but was actually only 5 minutes. He lifted his head and looked around.
Good. He wasn't dead. Then the machineguns and some of the new laserbolt guns started hammering away. He jumped up and scrambled to get to his machinegun. The Germans were trying to do one of their little (little is the wrong word, I should say gigantic) raids they do every once in awhile. He aimed at one of the black spots covering the ground, and thumbed the trigger. The gun lurched and then it started hammering away too. His teeth clicked together as the gun went and shot up all those unlucky German fools that thought they could just waltz right into his trench and start a little tea party.
Would you like some cake with that? he thought as he fired a burst at a poor German soldier who got ripped to shreds as the .50 caliber bullets tore into him. But, try as he or any other of the machine gun nests might, some German soldiers managed to not get either their heads or abdomens blown off and jumped down into the trench. When no more soldiers were coming, he pulled away from the machine gun and slung his assualt rifle and grabed his grenade belt. Now it gets interesting...

Stay tuned for Chapter 2! :p

Off the coast of Florida...

Corporal Frederick De-Bonhoff pulled away from the periscope and wiped the sweat off his forehead. The stale air stank of the body oder from the 50 men aboard the U-52. The men on-board would kill for a shower, and he couldn't even remember the last time he had one. The humidity in the air was unbearabe and made his Imperial Germania uniform cling to him like a wet blanket.
He peered back into the periscope and swung it around, searching the ocean for anything that might be a danger to the sub. Mien Gott! he cursed as he caught sight of a ship about 3 leages away. It flew the banner of the Confederate States of America.
"Captain! A ship!"
The captain, Captain Furshenhiemer, came walking down the narrow hallway that led to the torpedo room.
"Colors?" he asked.
"Confederate, sir."
"Krampf" he cursed.
Furshenhiemer looked into the periscope himself, then pulled away just as quickly. "Dreadnaught class." he murmmered.
Then the diving warning went off. Frederick went back to his periscope and sounded off the corrdinants of the ship to the gunner. The gunner then made a few quick calculations on his computer.
"I've got a lock!" he said, and pressed the LAUNCH button.
Through his periscope, Frederick could see the ship steering erraticly because its onboard computers had sensed the lock. It would not save them though.
The launch button fired three 6 meter long explosive warheads built for ship to ship combat. The reason captians don't like taking on Dreadnaughts is because if you miss, it has highly advanced anti-sub capabilities and would most likely sink the submarine. Also, they just fired off all their warheads and are left with only torpedoes.
Frederick watched the missles strak toward the target. On of the missles exploded into flame before it hit the ship.
"Damn. They have AMS systems!" he said.
Everyone held their breath.
But the other two missle's paths stayed true, and they both streaked toward the battleship and hit. Two plumes of fire erupted from the battleship: one on the bow, and the other amidships.
"Got 'um!" Frederick said. "Two missles have hit the target!"
Everyone on the bridge let out a sigh of relief. A few whooped. But as the smoke cleared, there was the battleship, smoking, but intact and still floating.
"Wait, oh no, negative on confirmation, repeat, negative on confirmation. Battleship appears intact."
Now everyone knew what they had to do. Get the hell outta' there.

Richmond, Virginia

Jason's eyes bolted open.
"What the fu... those are air raid-sirens!" He jumped out of bed and threw on his overcoat. He then ran down the stairs, skipping three steps at a time. Jason's hands fumbled the door, but it finally unlocked and he bolted outside. Sure enough the air-raid sirens were going off, and spotlights shown up into the sky. In the early morning gloom, Jason could barely make out the outlines of many, many planes, too much for a regular raid. These looked like they were accompanying an invasion.
Then the bombs started falling.
"Oh, crud!" Jason said as the bombs started coming down near his neibrouhood. "MOM!!!"

Sam pulled a grenade from his belt and lobbed it around the corner. A half second later the grenade exploded, sending the body parts of the German that was hiding around the corner flying past him. He ducked around the corner and fired a suppressive burst where the German had stood. There was no one there. He ran along the trench, keeping his head low to avoid being picked off by snipers, and headed for the nearest bunker.

General Johnson McArthur was there, pointing at a map on a table. Other high ranking officers were in the room.
"Corporal Sam Whicalsky reporting for duty, sir!" Sam said and saluted.
The General finally took the liberty of turning around and returning the jesture.
"Ah, Corporal. What's your status, son?"
Sam replied,"Those Germans never knew what hit them!" and then, "Green, sir."
"Glad to hear it." he motioned towards the table and Sam moved closer."See this here?"
All it looked like to Sam were to close together lines. "Yes sir."
"Well," the General said,"you are going to lead a charge through here, Corporal and break through the enemy lines."
Sam was stunned. "Just me and my men?" he asked.
"No, Corporal. Another regiment and a battalion of tanks will be supporting you."

oh, and quick suggestion of the top of my head-advanced mining techniques (underground tanks, etc.) could be pretty cool and fits into a story like this

On the front

The corporal pulled a picture out of his uniform's breast pocket. It was an old, 2-D photograph of his wife and children, Emerette, Johnny, and Josh. They all were smiling in the picture.
SAm closed his eyes and remmembered: they were sitting on a beach; the sun was shining, sunburning his back while waves gently crashed against the shore. Seagulls circled overhead, looking for a chance to snatch his family's picnic lunch.
"Daddy, look at them!" Johnny said, pointing to the seagulls overhed. Sam looked down at his son, who was half buried in the sand.
"They're just waiting for a chance to come an carry you away," he said.
Johnny looked at him as if he were serious, then after seeing the look on Sam's face, smiled and laughed.
Sam laughed too and he hugged his son.
Then the bright colors of the beach began environment began to fade as the vision returned to his brain's memory closet. He fought to pull it back to his sight but it wouldn't reappear.
Sam tasted dirt and grit in his mouth an suddenly, his dream truly was gone. He was lying in a mud filled trench which stank of blood and urine. He riased his head and looked around. The non-stop rattle of gunfire had put him and the rest of his squad to sleep.
He rubbed his eyes and readjusted his helmet. "Okay, men. Wake and suit up." He shouted.
The men around him had started to rouse and yawn.
"Damn, Corporal, we get 15 minutes worth of sleep and you wake us up with a bugle?" A Private named Fahjad said. He keeled back over and closed his eyes again.
One of his squad-mates kicked him in the ribs and said "It's obviously been longer than 15 minutes, fool. Look at the sky."
Fahjad unwillingly opened his eyes and peered at the sky. " By God, your right."
What had been a light blue earlier was now an orange and red array of colors.
"Shoot! Our charge is supposed to be starting soon!" Sam exclaimed.
Everyone jumped at the sound of that. " Mount up and get ready for immediate evac." The Corporal said.
Men picked up their helmets, which had fallen off during their sleeping, their assualt rifles and grenade belts, all getting ready for the inevitable charge into enemy lines.
Sam's radio suddenly clicked on, and everyone stopped to listen; it was McArthur's voice," All men heed and stand to: Unknown hostiles closing on our position."

Pictures will probably be added tomorro!
