The NES is a slightly different concept as instead of being just a game, it also tries to create a story by each player having to play in character.

Also the first ever NES was actually a true never ending story, but later evolved into a story where each person ruled a nation, and then into the Diplomacy like game you see today.

But it has one distinct advantage over Diplomacy - rather than being the logic game that Diplomacy is it instead relies slightly on luck, and allows you to have more armies etc that makes the game more tactical in my opinion.
