http://www.civfanatics.net/methos/hof/staff/gauntlet.gifWhile the general Hall of Fame is an ongoing competition, we like to run time-definite competitions between updates that we call Gauntlets. Standard Hall of Fame rules (*) still apply, but any games meeting the settings will be counted towards the Gauntlet.

(*) Please read the >> HOF rules << (http://hof.civfanatics.net/civ4/rules.php) BEFORE playing!

I assume that the best scores are to be found by fast domination? That's what it looks like - how is score figured in Civ IV? Vaguely similar to civ III, where it's based on people and territory?

Ok - here's my current submission. It's a 1620AD finish. My goal was a phalanx-rush, then research for Odeon and then standard culture game with 9 cities.

Here's the begin of the log and if you want a better summary than the one above just ask :)

1605AD. Also a Phalanx rush (but a Chariot rush works, too -- it all depends on resources), then CS, Pyramids, Biology (with Lib), the rest is standard.

I got a bit delayed along the way and got a few non artist great people but still finished it.If you go non-artist GPs it seems you built too much wonders. You only need --- none! But if you cannot resist only get Parthenon, Mausoleum of M, Taj Mahal, Sixtine and Pyramids (for US - but not in the GP-Farm) and perhaps H-Gardens in the same city as the Pyramids. For Small Wonders you should have Heremitage in a Culture City and National Epic and Globe Th. in GP-Farm.

With Pyramids you can stop research at Liberalism (Printing Press) - otherwise you must go for Democracy. So stop research when you can switch to US and collect gold to buy all those nice cathedrals

I never build Globe. :) Quite frankly I like to stop research after Biology, Nationalism and Banking, spend an Engineer from the Pyramids on Natl. Park, and build Natl. Epic in the same city, usually the capital.

15-20 Artists under FS/Caste/Pacifism do the trick nicely. Likewise, I like to run as many Artists as humanely possible in all my 9+ cities. I cottage 2 other culture cities, but only moderately, like 8-10 cottages, the rest -- farms + mines/workshops for production.

Sistine and Parthenon are both good for this strat. I also build the Oracle for CS and the Pyramids (usually in the capital under Bureaucracy + Org.Rel.)

Funny - two really different strategies and nearly the same finish dates  I like Civ4 for this :goodjob:

i got the feeling i'm doing something wrong...
How many restarts does it take to find copper at your first city and finding your allie quick to take over his city and be lucky enough that he found a religeon? And whats the best way to do that. Had a great starting location with copper last game, found 1 of my rivals when my first phalanx was done, moved 2 to his city and 1 2 turns behind them. captured his worker and ffound that he had 2 archers and a charriot inside his city, and offcourse i died like i always do when rushing.... I did, agriculture, mining, BW and chopped my barracks and phalanx. and as i had 2 corn i figured doing agri first would benefit me. Was that the mistake?

"Turn 45/500 (2200 BC) [03-Aug-2008 14:08:13]
Athens begins: Phalanx (7 turns)
Phalanx promoted: City Raider I
While attacking in Indian territory at Bombay, Phalanx defeats (5.00/5): Indian Warrior (Prob Victory: 96.6%)
Buddhism has spread: Bombay
Captured Bombay (Gandhi)
Bombay begins: Library (91 turns)"

Your not serious right? I attacked my rival certainly within 45 turns, 7 turn agri, 7 mining, +-12 BW and max 6 for the 2 phalanx and his capital was about 12 squares away. Only mine has 2 archers and a charriot and yours have 1 warrior... how do you do that? Whats the trick? Just being lucky? Did you actually sent 1 phallanx?

madmenno,

Some AI are a lot more likely to get early archers than others. AI that start with Hunting are going to be fast to archery. AI that start with Mysticism will focus on getting religions. Try to pick those sorts of opponents.

Since you're trying to arrive at an enemy city while it's defended by warriors, skip the barracks. Build warriors instead. When you hook your copper, upgrade two warriors to phalanx (you should get a lot of gold from huts) and send one in each direction. Your chances of capturing at least one capital, if not both, are pretty good.

Some of the AIs get Archery/BW early, others go for religions, etc. In my last game (1580AD if accepted) I Chariot-rushed 2 civs (Liz and Lincoln), they both had Warriors only. Liz founded Judaism for me, btw.

Guys like Fred or Peter, on the other hand, tend to research Archery, BW and IW early, so you have a good chance to face a bunch of Archers, Spears and Swords.

Having a strategic resource (Copper or Horses) in the fat cross helps a lot, you can build a few units before building a Settler, meanwhile improve land around the city and let it grow until unhappy, then simply whip that settler and keep building units.

If you do it fast, the resistance will be minimal. In many cases you can simply build 3 Warriors before a Worker, and rush your nearest neighbor, which has only 1.

Here is what I have done with this gauntlet:

- Map: Terra or Continents
- Opponents: Asoka, Gandhi, Victoria, Roose, Lincoln and Napoleon (either he is near me, than he's my 1st victim or he is farther away, then he is a nice bait for the other civs)
- Using MapFinder with "Mining Resources: 2-999" to generate several promising maps
- Settle on plains-hill or on plains-elephant, build a worker and research Mining
- worker-barracks-warrior...-phalanx...
- research: mining-bronze-wheel-pottery-writing-alpha
- Worker -> grass-gems or gold-hill
- if no bronze and no horses (AH popped from a hut ;)) in 2nd expansion next game
- upgrade the warriors with the gold from huts
- hook up bronze(horses) immediately and chop phalanx(chariots) like crazy. Interestingly I never saw before that chariots got exp from barracks :)
- rush 2 or perhaps 3 neighbors for the nice city spots and use your remaining units for city defense
- don't be too greedy or your budget goes down very fast

good luck

Added:
- Don't promote a new phalanx immediately. Wait until after his 1st fight against a warrior and you can defeat one of the Indias with just 1 phalanx

Well, i managed to whipe Justantine and Issabel Pretty fast. Got a better time this time 1780AD almost a century earlier. But my costs raised enormously after taking there cities (5) at one point i had only 10% science 90% tax, whats the best thing to do about that? Should i have destroyed one or 2 cities? Or just go currency asap after BW?

The opponent strategy works nicely, i had brennus harrassing victoria by coincidence didn't know he was agrasive but did have a feeling. But he was realy screwing up my standings with the others :D.

Plains elefant improves the city square if you build on it??? not more or equal to a camp right?

I don't know map finder that well yet, but it doesn't look for bronze at ancient setting right? So these mining resources setting can i get some more info on that?

Yes, you get 2 hammers (rather than 1) from the city tile, as if on hill/plains. This means a Worker in 12 turns rather than in 15. Also +1 happy, of course.
Thanks a lot!

Cottages, Libraries, and CoL ASAP. Cottages to stay afloat (and even finance further expansion), cheap Libraries -- for science/GPs. 10% seems to be too low, but 30%-40% should be norm.

If your cities are big enough and work unimproved tiles, whip something useful (like Workers), this way you can reduce maintenance. If you are positive at 40%, quickly build another city until you have enough of them.

Use your first GS for an Academy, and 2nd -- for bulbing Philosophy.

Once you have enough improved land (especially farms), switch to Caste (I usually combine it with Rep. from the Pyramids), and run Merchants in one of the cities. You'll get some cash plus a GM, which you can send for a trade mission worth 1-1.5K.

Currency is good when at least one of your production cities has nothing specific to do, so it can build wealth. I usually get it after CS and MC but before Aesthetics, Drama and Music.

After that I go Paper -> Printing Press, and bulb Education along the way.

Plains-elephant gives you the same jump start as plains hill - 2F2H1G
This reduces the worker production from 15 to 12 turns

Ok - here's my current submission. It's a 1620AD finish.

Dang got 1630 AD. Sooo close.

Went warrior-rush for nearest capital and then built rest. 6 cities, built 5 captured 6th and 7th later... 2 religions, 3rd spread late game.

I did not use Mapfinder at all. I play on Inland Sea and look for 2 food + plenty of forests, or Gold/Gems and some floodplains. Then Agri -> AH -> Mining, no Horses -> BW, no Copper -> regen.

Because you can either chop them down for units/wonders, or save for Natl. Park. Horses and Copper pop frequently enough in a few non-forested tiles.

Frequent enough? Is there a map type where copper pops more? Playing inland sea @ emperror now for gminor 49. But can't seem to find copper at my starting position. On Emporer is harder, the AI starts with Archers. Whether you find Copper in the fat cross or build a second city, you're going to need a lot more than 3 Axes, because while you build your first 5 Axes, the AIs build 2 or 3 cities. I can think of 9 Axes, but still it's very risky.

I'm currently playing G-Minor 49 on GPlains, I did not early rush at all (even though it works sometimes), I just teched to Military Tradition (got it from Liberalism), and only then started wars. Better say, got attacked by Izzy, but that's fine. I'd start myself in a few turns anyway.

BtS is quite a different story with respect to the medieval wars. The usual way (huge stack of Maces and Cats) does not work, since such a stack is easily destroyed by cats and Horse Archers. On the other hand, since the AIs spam cats and Horse Archers, they don't build many Longbows, so Cuirassiers are extremely efficient. You lose some here and there, but the rest quickly make it to Combat 4-5.

Andrei, i go try chop 2nd worker and chop a settler, improve and get a load of axes as i realy want to whipe a civ with religeon befor 500BC for a headstart. or would slingshot oracle and slingshot liberalisme be the real winner here?

I dunno. I built the Oracle for CoL and the Pyramids, but I have not finished my game yet. It's late 1500s, 3 civs are dead, 3 more to go (well, 2 will be enough for Dom) I'm on the way to Railroad (have hope for Mining Inc) and suffer badly from the war weariness. I don't have SM yet, least Biology and Refrigeration. :)

Is it really worth going up to national park? Loads of more rounds instead of 100% culture?

Tried different angle, 4 cities only (1 captured with culture), 1600 AD win. Thought capital would finish faster with all those +cultures and I could switch other to capitals cottages but all finished within 1 round.

In my experience, yes. It gives you time to finish up at least the basic buildings, like temples and monasteries, and start the cathedrals. Raising culture to 100% at this point does not have the desired effect, and I think investing in science is more beneficial than using US to rush buy.

Biology is not that far away, because you can bulb Chemistry and SM, then take Biology with Liberalism around 1000AD. After that you can raise culture to 100%, and finish the remaining techs (Nationalism and Banking) using beakers from Rep.
