Introduction
The day was warm in the lands of the Hippus nomads, with the heat of the sun broken only by an occasional breeze. Silent and empty plains lay uninhabited in all directions, and there were no signs of habitation in evidence anywhere.
So the man walking through the desert was somewhat of an oddity, somewhat out of place. His clothing was ripped and torn in multiple places, and bright blue eyes shined out of his face. Eyes like those could not be found for miles, not until you reached the sea.
The man seemed to tire from the desert heat, and drew to a halt. When he gazed out towards the sky, a bit of blood was revealed on his tunic. This was especially odd because he had no wound, it could not be his blood. He dropped a small satchel that he carried at his side, revealing a glint of gold and a small figurine for a moment. Grunting, he kicked the bag into the desert. It was of no use to him anymore.
Having taken a short break the man continued on his journey. He was not headed back to his native lands, or more aptly seas. No, he was sure to be a dead man should he return. Instead, he was heading to a place of his own making, his last refuge as it were. On this next journey though, he would have no help to travel, so he moved quickly. Capture would bring swift death.
With so much walking left to be done, the man allowed his mind to detach. His thoughts turned to the statue and gold that he had retrieved. His pursuers could not have realized what he had done. They did not know the secrets of the statue, and with luck they would never learn them. When combined with gold……it brought considerable power.
One week Later
Finally, after a long trek, the man breached the endless desert and arrived at a small Hippus village. It appeared deserted, its inhabitants having left long ago. The village was familiar to its visitor. He had seen it before, on his last trip to the place. Shivering slightly, the man walked into a house seemingly at random. He looked around quickly, as if searching for something. Eventually, he located a small cabinet and opened it, adding the contents to a small bag that he had acquired.
With his work done, the man sat down on the floor and went to sleep, in preparation for the final segment of his journey.
In the middle of the night, a sound awoke him. The sound of creaking floorboards, as if somebody else was in the house. The man stirred abruptly, and grabbed a small silver knife from his belt. He moved quickly towards the door, and then hid at the side, waiting…waiting….
The door opened slowly, and the silhouette of a man appeared in the room. Without hesitation, the traveler grabbed his mouth, and stabbed him through the neck. With that the intruder let out a final breath and toppled to the floor, spilling his red blood onto the floorboards. Having disposed of the threat for the moment, the man took a cursory glance at the man’s face. The identity of the man he had killed came as somewhat of a shock, but he knew that he would have to deal with him eventually. A similar search through the man’s pockets revealed a small piece of paper, with his picture on it. Next to the picture were the words “Bounty: 30 000 pounds of gold”.
This disturbing piece of information robbed the man of any chance of sleep. He heard others outside in the village, and he had to be away. His deck was not an empty one, and if his pursuers followed him into his sanctuary he could finish them, but not here, not now.
It was time to be off thought the traveler, who also went by another name. He was also called Captain Pinman Riverking, formerly of the now shipwrecked Nightingale, and a priest of the Ashen Veil.

Leeksoup Jul 31, 2008, 10:18 AM If anyone bails, I'd like to be on the Reservist list, please.
Pinman Jul 31, 2008, 10:18 AM well, you can join in right now if you'd like.
Pinman Jul 31, 2008, 12:42 PM I've just experienced a small.... glitch. Unfortunately, its going to take me another 24 hours to deal with properly. Sorry for the delay.
EDIT: I might as well tell you guys. i sort of... deleted my NoTW file.

Now might be a great time for an 'epic fail' picture, but the sadness is too intense.
You're aware that nothing is really erased, right ? Just relocated.
Maybe some savvy computer expert from Sweden can help ?
Anyway, thanks in advance for all the effort you will make again just for our enjoyment.
:hatsoff:
Pinman Jul 31, 2008, 08:38 PM Well, Niklas and I have been IMing each other for most of the day, so I guess I assumed that if he could help me he would have.
Anyways, I only have 10 more PMs to go.
sirtommygunn Jul 31, 2008, 09:00 PM Now might be a great time for an 'epic fail' picture, but the sadness is too intense.
how about this: youfail.org
Still  though.
Methos Jul 31, 2008, 09:05 PM Anyways, I only have 10 more PMs to go.
I'm one of the ten.
Pinman Jul 31, 2008, 09:06 PM Actually, you aren't, but to be fair, I haven't really started sending PMs yet.
Niklas Aug 01, 2008, 04:00 AM @Izipo: He didn't really delete it, he overwrote it, which makes it a lot harder to salvage.
Also I'm not really a computer expert, I just pick up a few things here and there in my work as a programming researcher. But the computer is just my implement. I'm like a truck driver, I may know more about my vehicle than the average joe, but if things break down I still call for a real expert. ;)
Ekolite Aug 01, 2008, 04:18 AM Pinman already knows but I thought I'd tell you lot too. I'm not going to be able to play in this because of my holiday which is 2 weeks long starting around the same time as this starts. I will of course be lurking with interest but sadly can't play. :(
This sucks so much.
:(  :(  :(
J-man Aug 01, 2008, 11:04 AM I've just experienced a small.... glitch. Unfortunately, its going to take me another 24 hours to deal with properly. Sorry for the delay.
EDIT: I might as well tell you guys. i sort of... deleted my NoTW file.
There are many programs which can often undelete files. I use recuva (http://www.recuva.com/). It won't probably work this time as it will overwrite the files.
On-topic: can't wait to begin.
Izipo Aug 01, 2008, 05:46 PM Overwriting ? Talk about some 'unententional act' (I don't know how to translate 'acte manqué' but it's a well known thing in psychology, when someone does something unconsciously to not do what was intended all along).
Can't wait to start too, and too bad you won't be around this time Kol.7, have a nice holiday.
Niklas Aug 03, 2008, 03:16 PM Well well well, we finally have a lead on the aliens. Pinman told me on IM Friday that he was with a cable repair guy who would need to shut down his internet for a few hours, but that he would be back up later that night. Obviously he got smacked in the head and abducted instead. A note to all GMs, current and future - if a cable repair guy comes knocking your door, don't open it! :shifty:
(Seriously though, if he got some connection problems on Friday afternoon, I wouldn't have expected my ISP to fix them before Monday at least. )
Tasslehoff Aug 03, 2008, 03:22 PM I think TEH ALIENZ are internet companies in general. The internet where I'm currently staying was gone when I arrived, and despite the phones getting fixed, the internet remains nonexistant.
J-man Aug 03, 2008, 03:58 PM Ah, ISP's and their dreaded customer service. They can make a grown man cry...
merciary Aug 03, 2008, 04:21 PM ... or swear until their face turns blue.
D'Artagnan59 Aug 03, 2008, 08:27 PM I'm back...
Niklas Aug 03, 2008, 08:53 PM Update from Pinman who was quickly online from a friend's house. The cable guy indeed tore his internet down, and he's having another person come in and look at it on Tuesday, since Monday is apparenty a holiday.
The13thRonin Aug 04, 2008, 09:21 AM I'm here!!!
thomas.berubeg Aug 08, 2008, 02:53 PM Any luck yet?
Niklas Aug 08, 2008, 03:11 PM I haven't seen him online since my last post. :(
J-man Aug 08, 2008, 03:27 PM That probably means his internet connection is still dead. Are these delays normal for a NOTW? Or is this particular one cursed or something?
Niklas Aug 08, 2008, 03:31 PM Most start on time. But the aliens have taken a few GMs right at the start. Though this one was deliberately delayed due to Dissensions, I think that's a first. But the delays we're seeing now, that's certainly not normal.
Love Aug 09, 2008, 06:34 AM Crap not another one. :(
J-man Aug 15, 2008, 05:07 AM Is this still alive or is it dead? Anybody seen Pinman?
