 I recently bought a new computer and transferred all my civ files over to it after installing Civ III. My old computer was Windows XP, new computer Windows Vista.

When I change my mod's biq file in the editor and try to overwrite the other one it keeps saying that I can't because it's 'read-only'. I've tried right-clicking the file and under 'Properties' 'read-only' isn't checked off. I tried right-clicking the scenarios folder and 'read-only' is checked off. When I uncheck it it asks if I want to perform that action for all sub-files and folders. I click 'ok' which closes the dialogue box, and when I go to the properties again it's still checked off as 'read-only' and I can't overwrite my biq file.

It's very annoying to not be able to overwrite my biq file.

If anyone has any suggestions on what I can do to solve this, please help.:)

Try this: Turn Off User Account Control in Vista...
Go to Start-Click Profile Picture and Click the link to turn User Account Control Off
Uncheck the box to use User Account Control
Reboot your computer
Set the Read Only atribute as wanted or any other thing that you were unable to do then Turn User Account Control back On.

Thanks Vuldacon,

I'll give that a try and let you know if it worked.:)

Thanks again, Vuldacon. It did work.

Will this make my computer vulnerable at all, though? It is warning me now that user account control is off and to turn it back on.

Yes, it would be more vulnerable surfing the Web for example so...as I mentioned above...Turn it back On after you complete what you want.

Sorry, I missed that last part about turning it back on.

Thanks.:)

There's a better way to solve your problem..
You should go as you already did to the Civ folder (of cause you can also choose just your scenario folder aso)
right click->properties-> security
Here should be the
groups:
System, Admin, Userxyzs
set them to allow all...
at least this way worked well for me without deactivating user acount control
It might be that you have to run your system as admin so your changes are saved....

Thanks, Samez.

I'll see how that goes as well. I'd prefer not to have to deactivate user accounts to affect the files. Thanks for the tip.:)

Yes as Admin. you can set and save the changes if you have an ongoing need to make other changes... My impression was that you simply wanted to Reset the Read Only setting from transferring files to your new computer.

Yes, I had preferred to be able to change the biq. whenever necessary. When I went to the properties-->security, it looked like administrators were allowed to change it anyways (and I was an administrator), but I selected for anyone to be able to alter the file.

I hadn't tested whether something had got fixed from when I'd turned the user Account off or whether this did it, but it's working all fine now.

Thank you to you both, Vuldacon and Samez, for all your help.:hatsoff:
