I posted some Avatars in another thread earlier today, but they are probably better off here. They are Floppa's Smug Mood Smilies (1K GIFs), based on the one that Matrix began with:

Floppa, you are SUPPOSED to download it Once, silly! That's why I posted it for you! Well, unless you don't want to try them. So there should be 1 download, LOL!!!

floppa21

I right clicked them to my desktop and clicked and dragged them from there. Do they have to stay there for CFC to remember my avatar?

starlifter
Aug 01, 2002, 02:07 PM
@Floppa: once you upload it as a custom Avatar, it does not matter what you do with it on your own machine. you can even delete it from your desktop or wherever. If you change color very often, you should keep one of each color on your machine, so you can upload the new color whenever you want. You can always come back to this thread (bookmark it), and right click it to your own desktop again. :).

@Ren:

Ren, This one will work, I think. I have been learning more about this stuff when making yours and Floppa's Avatars. I used a series of mathematical transformations to clear up the reduces size image, and maxed the X-dimension. The limiting fator is of course the city name, which sets the reduction amount. It is 3.6 KB, a GIF, very sharp, and clearly readable.

BTW, JPG, even at 95%, just did not do this particular graphic justice, due to the fine detail around the city and part of the name. It needs to stay GIF to look good, and a 95% JPEG is about 4K anyway, yet more fuzzy. :).

Bah starlifter... Sorry I don't have 100s of dollars worth of fancy programs.

hehe...

Well, I used only HypersnapDX (a screen capture program) and ACDSee (an image viewing program), both of which are free. Ohmigosh! Free??! Yup.... I have hundreds of dollars of fancy software, but only 3 little problems:

1. Most are not installed.
2. The ones that are, are in Win2K (and I am almost always booted in Win95, for speed).

3. I don't know how to use all those fancy programs.

:D

So I'm experimenting with how to use the little free programs, like HypersnapDX. Mikoyan's is the 3rd Avatar I tried, since it looked so fuzzy and I figured there must be a way to fix it. But I'm definitely not a graphics person  ....

PS, I would do something with your Avatar, Spycatcher, but I like it just as it is ;).

Surely all the advance training and equipment that enables you to catch spies could be used for revenue raising. And you had to have had a scource of funds to get that training and Equipment. Industry standards courses like "Seducing superspys, mad scientists, and foreign politicians for Fun and Profit" cost more that a little graphis program. :D

Well, if you can't see already, its just the pikemans body from civIII. Replaced the pike with the sword, changed the body color to white, changed his armor white, and added a cross. Thats where the shadow comes from.:p 3-D? Not that 3-D, but the chest armor and the cloth on his legs I did this way: start with the base color, in this case pure white in the middle, or as close as possible to the middle,(in the chest it is a horizontal line at the middle vertical wise) then just make the base color a shade darker and put it on both sides of the base line. Thats what I do. See, I can't do anything without a base body first...:p

It is my hope that he is studying hard. A few weeks ago, he said he had fouled up academically, and well, it would be a good thing if he puts his school before posting :). I don't know if they have summer school in The Netherlands, but in the US at age 14, that is where you would be given how his tests turned out.

Thanks Starlifter. Looks better without the background.

I hope you didnt have to do it pixel by pixel...

You're welcome. You come up with good pictures (e.g., yours and Becka's). Yours took more time because I'm learning as I go. It goes without saying that with crude software (which I prefer because it's fast and the Avatars are only 65^2), background removal is a pixel by pixel task. I used the green screen trick though, and a fat brush to paint everything bright green, close the the outline. What made yours hard was the elbow, left side, and helmet area. I had to do some trial and error, make guesses, and use visual trickery (the eye does not always see what is really there, as you can notice if you zoom your avatar by 8x). I also messed up and applied rendering AFTER the green screen, which shades the green to an undetectable (by the eye) but digitally different value. That meant transparancy left lots and lots of green (nicht zer gut). So I had to re-color it again. New rule: apply all digital enhancements to final form BEFORE doing transparancy ;).

@ AoA: I sure did like your George Peppard (aka Hannibal!). Peppard also played another memorable character earlier in his career, the dude in the movie, The Blue Max (can't remember his name).

Wish the size could be a bit more, my pics have a bit of haze being shrunk so much.

Use a better mathematical model for reducing size, like the Lanczos method. Even the Mitchell function or B-spline is better than straight Box, Triangle, or even Bi-Cubic methods for most pics.

I like to use Lanczos, and the do sharpening and despeckling as necessary. But even with that, almost every Avatar needs at least some work to make it look good. Flatlander Fox's, for instance, took a lot of individual Pixel work because of artifacts produced, and dithering in the lettering in the "genius" text.

Post a bigger pic of your Hannibal and I'll try shrinking it with a better function.

In 1972, a crack commando unit was sent to prison by a military court for a crime they did not commit. They promptly escaped a maximum security stockade into the Los Angeles Underground. Today, still wanted by the government, they exist as soldiers of fortune. If you have a problem, if no one else can help, and if you can find them, maybe you can hire...

The A-Team.

They are making an A-Team movie.

The latest official word, from Stephen J. Cannell:

Hannibal Smith - Robert De Niro (Goodfellas, Casino, Raging Bull)
B.A. Baracus - Bill Duke (Predator, Exit Wounds, Commando)
Face Man - Bill Paxton (Twister, True Lies)
H.M. Murdock - Brendan Fraser (George Of The Jungle, The Mummy) or Bill Murray (Groundhog
Day)

Don't expect it before 2003/4.... it seems to have lots of delays.

Actually, I have helped people with Avatars because I've been meaning to mess with some of the low-end (e.g., simple) image programs.... doing stuff with Avatars has made me learn quite a bit about things, and apply some trickery techniques (the brain does not always interpret what the eye tells it, with objectivity :D ). It's a semi-puzzle "challenge" to get a good crisp avatar in the size limit.

Is someone wanting that as an Avatar? Or maybe a part of it as an avatar? In general, a closer up looks better than a wide view, because of the smallish nature of icons/avatars.

Well, a BB is a good avatar anyway. There is still nothing like the modern Battleship for power projection, parking a BB offshore, and shelling a city or target at will sends a certain signal to the recipient. No single weapon currently deployed by any nation, short of a nuke, can sink a properly captained Missouri Class BB. Too bad we retired all the BBs. We should make some more. Mabye 80 or 90. Now wait. We name them after states, so let's limit them to 50.

Battleships
These are nuclear powered, and equipped with 12 25" guns, which fire ordinary, and extended range munitions. With a top speed of over 45 knots, they are clad with up to 25 inches of electromagnetically hardened steel and titanium, with internal bulkheads and kevlar where appropriate. At 1250 feet long, and displacing over 100 000 tons, they are the most powerful ships afloat, in this microcosm.
They carry the SPY-1 AEGIS radar, and SM-2 MR and ER Missiles (Block V), fired from launchers, and VLS. The ships also have a 204 cell VLS for Tomahawk missiles, as well as fully modernized ASROC capability. They additionally carry 48 Harpoon anti-ship missiles. They also have the following capabilities - flagship operations, Target Acquisition Battery (TAB) radar, Advanced Field Artillery Tactical Data System (AFATDS), mine detection systems and counter measures, cooperative engagement box, 8 Phalanx CIWS, 1 extended range, reloadable MLRS in armored box (for even more shore support) and the secondary armament of 24 5" guns.
They have the capacity to accomodate several hundred troops, as well as having hospital and forge facilities, and and carrying supplies.

I'm all for the Darskshade class Battleship, but we need some harriers and helos, esp. at that length. We may wanna have some mini-Darkshades, so they can fit thru the Panama Canal. Or else we deninitely must build not a measly 8 or 10, but 50 or 300. When someone can walk from LA to Tokyo, stepping on nothing but US Navy Battleships, we can let the forges & shipyards have a rest.

Maybe a few should have 2 to 6 superguns... pinpoint extended range of 125+ miles, with projectile heights exceeding 118,000 feet. Naturally, some should be "specials" (nukes, and some neutron warheads).

The vast majority of those specifications are well within reason, with the only object being cost. There were studies into fitting the Iowas with AEGIS, and modernized BBGs would have 128+ Tomahawks. The Standard missiles are just a natural consequence of AEGIS
All one did was raise the gun size, and consequently the armoured plate, and thus the size of the ships. Going along with the extended range munition research of the late 1980s and 1990s, that gives them a bigger range. The internal bulkheads and kevlar are modern SOPs in naval ships.
The steel, and titanium in some places armor, is just taking what has already been done, and improving it slightly.
Making them nuclear powered makes sense, as it saves fuel cost, and allows longer deployment, which is their raison d'etre.
They already have the secondary armament, 4 Phalanx CIWS, Harpoons, and all. The various electronic and C4I capabilities outlined are one's that would be put in a modernized Iowa.
The MLRS is just a little tribute to the rocket LSTs of WW2. :)
It is just taking a ship frame the size of a Nimitz class CVN, and BBGN-ing it. :)
As starlifter mentioned, the draught of such a vessel may present certain transit problems, which can be solved by two methods in combination -forward deployment, and dredging the Panama Canal to fit them. As for needing aircraft on such a vessel, the aircraft are left to the supercarriers, which carry 250 of 'em. Some helos might be carried.
It combines the capabilities of a cruiser, a floating arsenal, forge, supply and hospital ship, a flagship, a national power projection asset, naval gunfire support of a battleship, a surface warship that can blast any other out of the water (just think of the nearest surface rivals - the Pyotr Veliky Raketny Kreysers. No match at all.), a fast method of deployment and victory in the littoral zones, and inland. It also fulfills the requirement for more missiles afloat, in the most survivable vessel ever.
They should operate as part of composite battle groups, which can thus smash all opposition, not to mention be substantially faster than them.
All the various capabilities are within reach, so, in conclusion, the Darkshade class BBGN is more than just the product of an active imagination. It is a vision for what could and should be. :D

Let's get 'em built, Pronto!

:goodjob:

PS, People may have heard of the 600 ship navy, in the mid-1980's buildup under Reagan & Leyman. I think we hit 588 or so, peak. We are down below 450 now, maybe below 400. So maybe what we should do is keep it simple. Take 600, subtract the number of ships of our navy, and that equals the number of DS Class BBs we should build. :)

I'm sure there is a story behind it, since most people posting here seem to know who it is. Why does an ambigious character fit darkshade so well? Whilst the notion of goblins, et al, was an old one, and a feature of much folklore, not just European, Tolkien did coin the idea of naming them 'orcs', which is derived from the name of a sea creature.
He was also one of the compilers of the Oxford English Dictionary, and his scholarly work on Beowulf is quite masterful, and highly recommended.

I avoided Beowulf as much as possible throughout university but did come across Tolkien as an authority on it. However much you may have all liked the film, I still maintain that The Hobbit is a far superior book. And yes, I have read all three. :)

On-topic, can I mention Rodgers' avatar? I hate it! It just makes me laugh every time I see it and I have started to look forward to his posts.:mad::lol::mad::lol:, etc.

One will forgive you for your ignoranced, Mr. C-141, as you are old, and consequently not quite right in the head.
Suffice it to say that the avatar in question represents one's favourite actor, who is certainly not girly, despite his tender years. Thus it was so before LOTR, and after. He has done a lot of arguably better roles previously, in being the best child actor since Mark Lester.
It fits perfectly with the Chief Defender of the Battleship, as several of his roles have veritably saved the earth itself.
Tsk.
Well, as long as a hero(ine) can save the earth, I'm certainly not prejudiced on their looks ;).

When I saw the original pix being posted, I did think they were female, but the as others posted, I started to think from the context that they were male after all. If one has seen the movie, I'm sure there is no confusion though. I thought the stuff on the cheeks was makeup, or possible war paint or something, but one post mentioned a reflection or something.

You mentioned "child actor". Of curiosity, what is the age of the actor, and the age of the movie character? Anyway, if you're happy with it, that is all that matters! :)

That would be interesting. I did not realize the geneology of Orcs, but I did read Beowulf in college. I just don't recall orcs, but maybe that's because of the well-know orcs in Warcraft that tend to be fresher and more common in experience.

I agree with Floppa21... I'd want to read the book, since Tolkien is a well known and respected author (e.g., he did not write just to produce a movie and sell merchandising rights).

(To drag this further off-topic) Actually, he held the chair in Philology at Oxford (Merton College?). His "Sir Gawain and the Green Knight" is also considerd a master work in the field. He originally started writing about Middle Earth in order to have a place to put the "languages" he was developing.

Oh, well I don't dislike it.. I just did not have the common experience to know what is was (e.g., from the movie, and the gender). The actual avatar itself is indeed quite good.

No, its not threadjacking. It is just talking about an issue arising from a custom Avatar. The avatar gave me a distinctly different impression than people who knew the character and the movie, and people explained it, and have returned then next avatar subject that comes up :).

by robehans:

The way I do it is to size it, clear it up, make the final adjustments, and use bright green as the background color. Then I set the bright green to transparant, and bingo! But you need to carefully look at size and quality issues, too... the Avatar must fit the 65x65 & 4K, which most will just do under the wire.

I use a screensaver program, HypersnapDX, to do most of the work. I use ACDSee for most of the mathematical transforms, especially to get the clearest starting point after a reduction in size.

I always edit the final result pixel by pixel, at about 8x magnification, to make it look good. That is how I did Becka's, Floppa's, and Gunning's, for instance.

robehans, here is an heavily modified and enhanced version. I had to setp up to another piece of software to fix it, because the original was very small and of very poor quality, and do some editing. But the result is a full sized Avatar, with full transparancy. I used some very advanced transforms to recreate the details:

my black knight is not originally black and white!!!
Starlifter used some program to "enhance" the pic, originally , if you really wanted to... ...and before i resized the pic to 65 x 65 pixels... ...you could see light spots of blue, and the eyes of the knight in red... :) i also changed the sides of the ornaments on the horse from gold to silver... ...all i need is someone telling me how to make the background invisible with Adobe Photoshop...

1.) Indeed. :D

2.) Indeed. 'Tis the misinterpretation of what is a reflection in the film. And the feminine appearence is meant to imply that this particular hobbit is somewhat more Tookish than usual.

3.) He is 21, born of January 28th 1981 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, which makes 'Lij 190 days older than me, if my drunken maths is correct (one does really know more than what is healthy on this subject) and has acted since 1989. The character, Frodo Baggins, is a hobbit in his early years (40s), as they live longer than do humans. The actor in question hath played many other roles sicne 1989, and done them well.

4.) Tolkien was the founder of orcs, and modern fantasy, at the same time as being an esteemed Oxford don. A good read, guaranteed, and a good film, unless thou art Juize. :D ;)

If you mean your Avatar, I doubt it would need messing with, since it already looks great ;).

On second thought.... hmmm.... This will take some real heavy duty CPU power, and the lights may go dim in the Northwest for a few minutes, but....

For your avatar, after many enhancements and transformations, plus subtle color shifting, voila!

Oh, my goodness! It really is all black, sort of like, ummm, anarchy working best!

@ anarchywrksbest: so it was you who made Lefty's cube. The white background clashed with some of the site skins... transparancy is becoming a necessity if people don't have a rectangular/square shape, since there are at least 8 different backgrounds in the skins now. :)

EDIT: I just saw you used the 1st (all black!!) graphic! Would you believe that avatar is only 111 bytes long? Now, what if I made it transparant!!? :D

anarchywrksbest
Aug 18, 2002, 06:02 PM
Well i wanted to make it transparent but couldn't. However you shouldn't mess with the size. It took me ages to make that unit graphic.........

starlifter
Aug 18, 2002, 06:14 PM
I think your cube looks good! The detail you had in it allowed it to be upsized very well. Since Avatars are only 65^2, I usually try and fill them, if file size permits. The big cube was 125 bytes over the 4K limit, until I finally did a light transparant background that cut 200 bytes off.

Do you want the smaller image made transparant? Or maybe you have a larger master, and can make it about 63 pixels wide (due to the 4K limit). If so, I'll make it transparant for you.

BTW, making the small one transparant is very easy, since file size iterations are not necessary.

Here (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?postid=409134#post409134) is some info. To make transparant backgrounds, I use a screencapture program called HypersnapDX, which is chareware and on most download sites, or www.hyperionics.com .
