View Full Version : Unit preview; Early tanks (1930s)
Smoking mirror Jul 31, 2002, 06:14 PM The most pressing need for my scenario plans is an early tank, to go between the WWI style Armour and the WWII style Armour.
Because Civ III scenarios are "open" (war could happen at any time, and diplomatic options are up to the A.I. and the player to sort out, a scenario set during the 20th century needs the full progression of military develpoment.
With that in mind I'm working on two variants (i'm not sure which one I'm going to use, may do both) of the 1930s tank. I'd also like to do a Panzer I or II, though at the moment there is only the Firaxis panzer to represent almost all the german military machine (I've become a bit biased towards doing Russian units), I wonder if Pablostuka is still working on his Stug IV?
Any way, Iv'e finished the models and done the Default animation for both, I think I'll do the T26 as that is more "generic", it could pass for a light tank from almost any nation, here is a preview;
Smoking mirror Jul 31, 2002, 06:22 PM There are several variants of the BTx and T26 using all the latest inovations such as Sloped armour, but The variants Iv'e chosen both share the same turret design and were both used during the Spanish civil war (the BT5 used by the international brigades actualy featured a modified BT2 turret, that lacked the rear projection).
Here is a preview of the BT5;
Smoking mirror Jul 31, 2002, 06:33 PM Iv'e been thinking of making the T26 as the Standard Light tank used by All nations (thats why Iv'e put the stars on top, the star is actualy quie a versatile symbol during WWII mods as it was a general symbol of military designation used by most nations, exept of course the Germans. Actualy most of the Axis nations seem to have replaced the star with the Eagle in most of thier military visual language). While the BT5 would be a special "comintern" unit, like a 1930s reverse version of modern NATO peace keepers, representing international comunism instead of international Democracy. The tank would have relativly weak ADM values but could act as a "colourless" Privateer style unit.
Here are the Default flics so you can see what it looks like in the game;
Incubus0223 Jul 31, 2002, 06:39 PM hey sm great unit i asked this in another post but how do you make your preview is it a snapshot in your 3d program??? which 3d program do you use??? if you could answer these i would be so greatfull i been looking for a better way to make civilopedia icons, and a better 3d program
CivGeneral Jul 31, 2002, 06:59 PM The Tanks looks good Smoking Mirror :goodjob:. Cant wait to try them out. The tanks looks like they can be made after World War I and before Motor Transporttion (Where the Tank and Panzers comes out).
Smoking mirror Jul 31, 2002, 07:23 PM For Incubus;
I use a program called Corel Dream 3d; Itc omes as part of the Corel draw/photopaint 8 package (I think their on Corel 10 now), Once you make all the objects and arrange them/add textures, you render the image at a set size using a virtual camera in the scene. You can set various options such as reflectiveness and transparency on or off in the rendering and set up all the various light sources. Some functions work better than others (the transparency is good, the refective ness not so good) but most work fairly well as the program is esentialy for creating static 3d scenes and does'nt feature any animation routines (I discovered that it does have Inverse Kinomatics, but I don't use them much as they are not very well implemented, its as complicated to use them as it is not to if you get what I mean).
Hopefully I should have these two units finished in time to send off to firaxis for the PTW expansion. I will be doing Pedia-images for all my units that I'm submiting as well as pedia texts (if I can work out how) and units 32 photos.
zulu9812 Aug 01, 2002, 02:34 AM Wasn't it you who was doing the Heavy Infantry? Whatever happened to that?;)
Venger Aug 01, 2002, 03:38 AM Have to see the unit in action - someone did an early French tank that was simply outstanding, and I'm using it in the alpha of my modpack...

P.S. FINISH THE FRIGGING T-34/85 YOU POSTED!!!!
Toasty Aug 01, 2002, 03:45 AM Perhaps I could convince you to do an R35 as opposed to a T-26? The Renault company basically pioneered French tank design, and as French tanks were good to excellent in the mid- to late-30s, it would seem more appropriate.
Just putting in my two cents, though :D.
TVA22 Aug 01, 2002, 09:23 AM Are you still doing a heavy bomber, or has that been pushed back? I hope not, since your 3 engine one was excellent, and we're still in need of more good planes. Also, are your ww1/ww2 naval units still in development?
Forgive me if I'm being rude, but we just have so many tanks already, and some of us are eagerly anticipating air and sea units.
Balou Aug 01, 2002, 02:13 PM Smoking mirror, all your tanks look very good and fit well in the game. I wonder how long it takes for you to create one of those tanks (they look very detailed)? Do you reuse any parts from the tanks?
Smoking mirror Aug 01, 2002, 06:21 PM I know there are lots of tanks, but of the ones Iv'e produced, I feel that only the Tiger I and T55 are of a high enough standard that I will use them in my own scenario, along with some of Kinboats exelent tanks.
The Heavy infantry is still waiting to be made, Infantry units take for ever, and require a very high degree of concentration to make, where as I can make tanks with my eyes closed (almost :) ). The light infantry is also coming along. I havn't devoted much time to making graphics lately because Ive been looking for a job; It takes up most of my time. I'm going to devote some of my time over the next few days to getting some stuff finished in time for the PTW deadline, Iv'e just finished the T26, it only took one day- its why I like doing tanks, they're so quick to do if I realy set my mind to it.
I'm going to finish the planes Iv'e been working on, and also the light infantry this week/weekend hopefully.
I thought about a renault, but the T26 looks very generic and I wanted it cos it was used in the spanish civil war (I want to do a SCW scenario one of these days).
Venger; About the t34 :lol: I'm keen to do that unit too, its my favourite tank (why I spent so much time on the model, and why it was the first unit I ever did), but as people have pointed out, there are a lot of tanks already, and two versions of the T34 on the boards already, so although I will get around to making it, its not at the top of my list (firaxis are doing a WWII units pack for the Play the world expansion, you can be certain there will be at least one version of the T34, so in the little time Iv'e got left for getting things ready for submisssion, I thought best to direct my energies else where, and a early light tank is vital for any 20th century scenario builder- there are already several meduim tank models, but apart from kinboats renault ( a bit too early) there is no early light tank model.
Any way, enough of the excuses, the T26 is finished, you will be able to download it soon from the finished units forum. The BT5 will be delayed for a little while (Iv'e got to finish my planes). :)
Ed O'War Aug 01, 2002, 06:32 PM Smoking Mirror:
You've made some great historical tanks, ever thought about doing a futuristic tank, say like a grav tank or a hover tank? This is something that I think is still missing from the game, and coming from you I'm sure it would look great. Anyways, it's just a suggestion.
Smoking mirror Aug 01, 2002, 06:39 PM I do plan on doing some special fictional tanks for a alternative histor mod I'm kind of working on (its a long term project, once all the vital real world units are present, I can start work) on ewould be a cold war Geman super heavy tank with two cannons and an Anti aircraft gun on top, and another would be a Italian UU; A light armoured vehicle (a light tank with road wheels) in the style of a custom sports car- big shiny chromed exaust pipes, red paint with flames painted on the side :lol: , It would be like an armoured hot rod!
Also I do plan on doing some future style units at some point, but too busy right now.
Venger Aug 01, 2002, 06:46 PM SM YOU UNIT TEASE!
Alright...make an M60A3 then...

Kingpin Aug 02, 2002, 07:19 AM Smoking Mirror,
I like the sound of your unit creation plans! Especially the futuristic-type tanks. Sounds very cool!
