View Full Version : Worst possible starts thread
AnotherPacifist Aug 03, 2008, 09:27 AM So I though Rhye should have some graphical evidence that his map generator leaves a lot to be desired.
Here's my Aztec start. Confined to a desert peninsula and unable to colonize the vast western North America. Sitting ducks until the conquerors show up. I haven't played it but I'm sure there'll be some dog soldiers appearing in the desert in the south. Tikal is close enough that once the conquerors come, the Mayans will die and they'll have a colony 9 tiles away from you.
thadian Aug 03, 2008, 11:30 PM i will post a few here, i have some others scattered already
onedreamer Aug 04, 2008, 02:42 AM I must say though, that unlike a fixed map, in a random map if you get a bad start you can just reroll ;)
Zdarg Aug 04, 2008, 03:03 AM Here's my Aztec start. Confined to a desert peninsula and unable to colonize the vast western North America. Sitting ducks until the conquerors show up. I see no serious problems about this map. Just invent Sailing, build a Galley, colonize decent land to north and conquer/destroy Mayan.

They won't, since all the desert will be within your cultural borders. They might appear in the mountains, though.

You have to realize that sailing takes 12 turns, and building/whipping a galley takes another 3-4 turns, and sending that settler up there takes another 4-5 turns. It'll be well after 1400 before our 2nd city is up, and we don't even have monarchy yet.
brucedecatz Aug 04, 2008, 08:08 AM Plus, any amount of dessert means one thing: barbarian camel archers are roaming. It is not funny. I got a decent start with the Incans and was willing to try the game, until I saw the Saracen dessert raiders in South American, and got terribly sick with the game and just quit...
Disenfrancised Aug 04, 2008, 08:13 AM I forgot to screenshot my england start - it had 2 cows and four sheep, all but one of the sheep on mountains that cut the city off from the rest of of island . I decided to continue playing post a quick trip to the WB to turn those mountains into (mole)hills.
The Q-Meister Aug 04, 2008, 04:21 PM Bad starts you say??
Just click on "Indian Empire" and have fun! :goodjob:

Besides, you will be able to use that galley to ruin their conquistador event.
Why do you want monarchy so early?
AnotherPacifist Aug 05, 2008, 06:22 AM Monarchy opens up Feudalism which is kinda key to defend against dog soldiers and conquistidors. In normal RFC I usually have Feudalism by the time I meet the Europeans.

In normal RFC I usually have Feudalism by the time I meet the Europeans.Interesting. In normal RfC I usually trade for Feudalism with one of Old-World civs already after the contact. Before this, archers and catapults are good enough way to deal with dog soldiers... and I never allowed conquistadors to appear.
What Azteca needs for happy life is Crossbowmen (+50% against melee), not Longbowmen.
AnotherPacifist Aug 05, 2008, 07:37 PM Somebody please kill me. (This is after the 3rd move when none of the Viking cities flipped).
Zdarg Aug 06, 2008, 01:51 AM Yeah, this is really awful.
onedreamer Aug 06, 2008, 04:09 AM hmm, the flipping system is getting more and more mysterious...
kbk Aug 06, 2008, 05:03 AM Yeah, it definitely needs some work. I don't think we can completely eliminate bad starts, but we can do some minor things.
You can ensure certain resources for ancient civs.
You should also be able to check the number of desert with river tiles vs. flood plains and convert some. Having Egypt or Babylon or Mali start with 8 desert tiles and 1 flood plains doesn't work.
You should probably eliminate flood plains on desert hills (though I'm less offended by this specifically).
Stop spawning resources on mountains.
Fix the flip system, and try to get better distance between some spawning empires. I see the French and Vikings near each other a lot.
Barak Aug 06, 2008, 07:22 AM Started a game as America (then went out for dinner). When 1733 arrived, the glorious American civ spawned on the west coast of North America between the Dutch and Spanish with no real room to grow. Granted they were the only 2 cities in the Americas (and naturally neither flipped to me)
Metal Alloy Man Aug 06, 2008, 05:32 PM @AnotherPacifist
Build a galley and colonize the island near Spain, would make for an interesting game.
AnotherPacifist Aug 06, 2008, 05:41 PM I bet you that island is reserved for the English and Dutch, no way I'm touching that. Plus I didn't know about that island before I decided to quit and go to worldbuilder.
Metal Alloy Man Aug 06, 2008, 05:45 PM Oh well, wait until the English and Dutch spawn dates to see if either spawns, if they don't colonize the island yourself, maybe it was for you after all.
onedreamer Aug 18, 2008, 01:13 PM This dutch start looks unplayable...
Metal Alloy Man Aug 18, 2008, 06:25 PM Wow!(10chars.)
mikeemike93 Aug 23, 2008, 12:01 PM Ok, heres one. High Earth Likeliness, and I play as France. I wait an hour for it to load. I see my starting position, and go into world builder. I am on a peninsula, isolated from Europe by a mountain range. I am completely surrounded by tundra, and 3 grasslands + mountains. I hav 3 cows wandering around on the mountains.:crazyeye: completely ridiculous.
onedreamer Aug 23, 2008, 05:24 PM install the peakfix in the bugfix thread for the cows.
AnotherPacifist Aug 23, 2008, 06:04 PM install the peakfix in the bugfix thread for the cows.
That's no help for him for that particular start, he won't have any cows then, wild or not!
onedreamer Aug 24, 2008, 03:28 AM not really, he can reload the autosave before the start and cows will be placed in a suitable tile, if available. Plus, it won't happen his next games...
