The Mod is almost complete just a few touch ups required, but before I finish it and send it off to Firaxis, I'd like some constructive critism, things like the colour, tree's, etc. And even things that you would have liked to have seen.

Wow... I don't think it could get better!... well... maybe a few things... Make the oceans a little more darker than the sea 'cause it's kind of hard to differenciate between the two. That's kind of one complaint. Apart from perhaps a few more little trinkets on the terrain tile like that cactus on the desert tile in the first screenshot. Perhaps a grassy patch on the grassland tile would be really swell. Ooo! How about like the remains of a rockslide on a mountain or hill tile? It'd be swell too. Apart from those, I look forward to using your graphics!

They are tall, but they still cover the same exact (almost) area of Firaxis's graphic work. So they won't cover anything that Firaxis didn't already. :)

It looks great. You fixed that shadow thing?

Just the oceans though, to help distinguish between ocean and sea tiles. The sea and coastal tiles look great.

When you showed that first preview there was a coastal square in sea squares and the shadow was wrong and you said you would fix it.

I don't know what the original shadow problem was, but if you decided to leave it in for a reason maybe it shouldn't be taken out.

Replace the files in civilization3/art/terrain with the ones in the mod you downloaded. Backup the originals too.

Snoopy you can make the delta look like it is water flowing over the dirt like a real delta, instead of a river over a coast.

Oh, and while not a priority, it would be nice if the plains were a little more greenish.

Very nice, I especialy like the Coastal shelf, it make you feel like units close to land should have a movement bonus and deffence bonus- that deep water looks very unfriendly for ship captains!

That shelf graphic reminds of a conpiracy theory I heard about a famous US nuclear sub that disappeared navigating through caverns under California that were entered by continental shelf openings. They gave evidence by talking about that sub and about how when they drilled for oil in Long Beach the whole city started to sink.

The point? I have no idea.:D

Lookin good snoop.

Perhaps the sea tiles could be lighter, that way the water blends a little more from coast to ocean.
I think the ocean is dark enough.

Hey, you asked for opinions.

That submerged whale graphic is over the top! Fantastic!
And the little atoll, or whatever it is, thats superb!

PTW will be worth buying just for your graphics alone.
Congrats!

Dragon King
Aug 03, 2002, 03:52 PM
Oh, just another little point. Perhaps you could make the mountains blend with there surrounding environements. Say if you put them next to a desert square, the mountains would look like arid mountains so you wouldn't get a clear difference between the yellow desert and the green grassy mountain base. One thing i dont like about civ 3:( It just looks silly.

those continental shelves are sweet as hell, but I am curious, have you tried to use submarines with this pack, because they use a certain color of water in their animations and I'm not sure they would blend in well with your new oceanic colors.....

Great graphics but the cactus is to big and stiks out to much - I would replace it with the occasional and very small oasis. Great though - i love the coast/sea graphics (where it drops down - looks like a sea cliff).

I forgot to say some files might not be in that folder so you might want to use the search function to make sure all the old files are replaced with the new downloaded ones.

Nice graphic! Look a little to tropical though... would be cool if it is possible to make the coast more greenish blue in the north parts of the world. To establish that coolish look.

Anyway, I think that the intersection between looks a little too square at times, could that be rounded off some? (like the desert in the first pic)

Anyhow, Nice job Snoopy!

Aug 31, 2002, 06:03 AM

An azure-blue sea. How romantic...

Actually I thought the tiny island in the sea was a nice touch...:D

Anyhoo... I must say I think this modpack looks a lot better than your last one where the se is concerned. The seas last time around looked to artificial.

I agree with the others who say that more random details (rock slides in hills, oasises and cacti in deserts, shrubs in grassland, mammoth skeletons on tundra;), etc) would be sehr nice...

warpstorm
Aug 31, 2002, 07:07 AM
Unfortunately, the tile graphics don't "know" what latitude they will be placed at. Northern seas would be pretty much impossible. The only thing that is possible is to have the tundra coast tiles look a little "colder". This is not as easy as it sounds because these tiles have to connect to other tiles without a sharp transition. <-- That's the the hard part.

W.i.n.t.e.r
Aug 31, 2002, 07:36 AM
Uhm, sorry I was unclear about that: What I meant was things like plains, grasslands, etc (perhaps new additional terrain tiles could do ?). Similarly making the connection of coast tiles may be too difficult...

warpstorm
Aug 31, 2002, 10:54 AM
The thing that makes editing tiles in Civ3 hard is that what you see as a tile in the game isn't actually a tile. What is in the center of the gridded square ins't the tile but rather the spot where 4 tiles meet. The files don't have grassland tiles so much as tiles that connect a grassland to a plain on the left side and a tile that connects a tundra to the coast, etc. Each tile is made up of 4 corners that will be every combination of 3 different terrains. Look at one of the terrain pcx files and the sentence I just wrote will make a lot more sense.

I love this new look. Probably my favorite, but I too am one of those who loves little details. You cant have a 10x10 patch of desert without some hills or dunes, or you cant go without cactus/oasis in the desert. The little things are what I am gonna be looking for.

BTW, Have you made any other graphic modpacks for civ3? I am making a Magic the Gathering mod and I need fantasy/medievel looking terrain (no shiny water, etc), and was wondering what all you have to offer.

Thanks
