View Full Version : The monster city challenge!
Mack_Jagger Aug 08, 2008, 08:09 AM Why do we do this? Play this game for hours and hours with silly little smiles on our faces? I guess the answer is different for every civer out there. But for me it’s definitly growing my cities bigger and better, seeing the hammer count rise, the commerce flow through the mulipliers and the science beakers going through the roof.
Some games I don’t really play to win. Recently I aborted a Monarch game that was a sure space race win, because I goofed up my science city. It wouldn’t be the monster i dreamed of. Just an ordinary science citiy and the fun was gone.
So this thread is for you to post screenies of those really memorable monster cities. Those cities that made you proud and you wished for everyone to see. Well, this is the time to brag!
Post’em and write a little bit which national wonders you placed in the city and why. What was the main reason you managed to make this city something beyond the extraordinary.
Killroyan Aug 08, 2008, 08:49 AM Megalomania I tell you. IT IS MEGALOMANIA!!! We all love big cities, shiny buildings and an army that can kick anyones behind.
1 memorable city was Monty's capital I took of his hands (don't we all love conquering Monty). 3 food resources, a few mines and the rest all forests so it became 1 of the best National park cities ever with I do believe over 12 free specialists from that wonder.
Best monster city was an OCC with over 1300 beakers per turn on normal speed. Love it when it gets that high :)
Phatkarp Aug 08, 2008, 10:03 AM I can't wait to see some of the responses to this one!
Stewie0416 Aug 08, 2008, 07:07 PM I love it when you can turn your sci slider to 0 and make OVER 1000 gold a turn, goodbye rifleman, hello infantry
madscientist Aug 08, 2008, 07:15 PM A screenshot shot from REX Queen Cathy I RPC game. The capital forrests were never chopped so I built the national park and national epics in it. Great GP farm, great research, good production, health never an issue.

MrCynical Aug 08, 2008, 07:43 PM A couple of cities from a game at Immortal I finished quite recently. First is my capital:

This is another National Epic/National Park city. I was a bit dubious about building it in a city with only three forests, but I didn't have very many left on my continent at all. There wasn't the usual tundra forest option, and I felt that the lack of a health cap was worth it given my capital was about 15 points past the health cap. Worked out great as a GP farm.
The other good city from that game was Madrid - my corporation city. Captured it off the AI in mid game and decided the shrine was worth making it the Wall Street city, even though the location was a bit awkward. 2000+ gold per turn at 100% science and with no merchants is, to put it mildly, useful.

It never got a second national wonder - I didn't really see any obvious one to pair with it as it wasn't my best commerce location.
The Mongols rather annoyed me by nuking it a few turns after this was taken. Fortunately Sushi is impervious to nuclear weapons, and it was just a matter of buying a new grocer to get the gold output back to maximum.

Can I ask what map script and settings you played that game with? It looks very interesting (and, of course, the cities are incredible!).
MrCynical Aug 08, 2008, 08:19 PM Can I ask what map script and settings you played that game with?
It's the Big/Small map script (I think I set it to random continent type and islands mixed in), with a high sea level and and arid climate (that was on random as well). Large map on marathon speed.
I quite like that map script - its very unpredictable, and gives a nice variety of continents and islands.

Awkward because too many plain water tiles?

 Just awesome. How much was the Mahabodhi and how much was corp-spam? Can you scroll down your building list and give us another screenshot?

And that took, jeez, 1/3 of one turn's cash at zero :gold:. Heh.
MrCynical Aug 08, 2008, 08:51 PM Awkward because too many plain water tiles?
Not really - I'm never too bothered about terrain around the Wall Street city, as I assume most of the gold will come from corps/religion whatever the sliders are set to. However when I made the choice Isabella was still on the map (though reduced to a few ice cities) so Madrid kept revolting. It was also a frontline city under heavy cultural pressure from Byzantium, so it was rather an inconvenient place to build Wall Street. The gold from the shrine was a bit too tempting though, and once I eradicated Isabella and drove Byzantium off the continent it wasn't a problem. To be honest I would probably have done that anyway.

Sure, here you go:
185308
So the bulk of it was from corporation spam. Only 165gpt from the shrine compared to 1932gpt from the two corporation HQs.
jason77024 Aug 09, 2008, 12:26 AM Very cool - thanks again for the follow-up shot. :hatsoff:
Mack_Jagger Aug 09, 2008, 10:51 AM Well MrCynical, that's just plain cool. Those are the kind of cities I would have been planning to build if I realized they were possible. They are truly mind blowing.
Stewie0416 Aug 09, 2008, 08:05 PM Those are the best cities i hav ever seen IN MY LIFE!::bowdown:eek:
Phatkarp Aug 10, 2008, 01:45 PM MrCynical: Holy Crap!
Tennyson Aug 11, 2008, 04:27 PM Play this game for hours and hours with silly little smiles on our faces? I guess the answer is different for every civer out there. I believe the answer for everybody is the same: Dopamine.
Mack_Jagger Aug 11, 2008, 04:54 PM He, it seems like MrCynicals posts scared away every other poster. :pCome on, don't be shy. Show us what you got. I would like to set an example but unfortunatly I don't have anything even remotely impressive to post. :rolleyes:But give me some time and I will dazzle you all!:D
Killroyan Aug 12, 2008, 05:49 AM Haven't had time to play yet. Will post a good city if I get one in the next games.
oyzar Aug 12, 2008, 06:18 AM problem with those cities are they are so incredibly late in the game(way later than i normaly win the game), for me it is all about getting the good cities up fast. Here is the same city at 3 different stages of the game, the city was a rather decent capital. http://forums.civfanatics.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=185628&stc=1&d=1218539650http://forums.civfanatics.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=183044&d=1216145501 http://forums.civfanatics.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=183045&d=1216145542
