View Full Version : Why do I always lose at the end??????
Billyman Aug 09, 2008, 04:34 PM Whenever I start a new game I always do very well in the beginning, usually with the highest score. But at around 1000 AD it seems that I always begin to lose. I begin getting low an cash which forces me to lower my research % and for some reason it takes much longer to build stuff in my cities. My score begins to drop and I lose by like 1800. This happens to me if I play on "Prince" difficulty or above, so I was wondering if anybody has any tips or anything that can help me. :D
reverend oats Aug 09, 2008, 04:38 PM How many cities do you have compared to the AI?
And saves are always helpful.
Billyman Aug 09, 2008, 04:41 PM I usually have thesame number of cities as the average AI's.
Lol, this is like my first time on this site so I dont know how to put up a save yet. Could you teach me? :)
DaveMcW Aug 09, 2008, 04:53 PM Cottages!!

Option A:
Use the 'Manage attachments' tool in the advanced posting screen.
Option B:
Find a file host and link to the file in your post.
I think we need a guide on this...
Edit: Listen to dave. Build that cottage and build a friend for it. And another. And another until you run out of land.

Lol ya there should be a guide. :D
Ya I tried that once and I had no porblems with money but it took forever to build anything in my cities. Lol. I guess you have to find a balance...
I have another question. What are "shields"? I've been reading a guide and that word came up alot.
TheMeInTeam Aug 09, 2008, 05:06 PM Until civ IV, hammers were called shields. Don't worry about shields in civ IV, worry about hammers.
If your cities with cottages produce too slowly, use the whip or mine hills.
If you want more specific answers you'll need more specific questions ;).

Ok, so hammers determine how long it takes to build stuff in your cities, food icons are used for your city population, and gold icons for gold in your treasury? Which icon is the most important one?
Whis means killing population for stuff?
Lol I'll make them more specific from now on. :D
CLST Aug 09, 2008, 05:28 PM You lose at the end, because whenever you lose, it is the end.

 Good point.

Everything a city makes has a hammer cost.
Which icon is the most important? Oh man, I'm not touching that. You need them all . You do want to settle cities that have enough food to grow and work the surrounding tiles though, or you won't be producing ANYTHING.
Yes, whipping kills pop to make hammers. 30 hammers per pop at standard speed.
Alot of these basics can be found in the manual or the nice, big PDF guide on the forum ;).
The strategic aspect of applying these basics are quite intricate and I suggest you learn them through a combination of looking at game summaries on this forum and practice in games of your own.
Billyman Aug 09, 2008, 05:45 PM I've just thought of another question. How many food icons does each citizen consume in a city?

 Well, I must sound like such a n00b now. XD
Whats your favorite civ to use?

America (specifically washington and lincoln), but if I want a really strong game then it's a (many sided) coin flip between Zulu/Egypt/Ottomans/Financial leaders. American leaders have great traits but the UU/UB aren't spectacular (UU is ok though).
I tend to avoid inca and rome because I find them too easy for my warmonger ways typically.

I've never played as America. What do you think about France? Thats the one I usually use.
Also, lately I've only been playing Rhye's and Fall, cause its so addicting. :) Any tips for that?
So how much food does every citizen require. Like if I have a city with 6 pop how much would I need to support ity?
Ginger_Ale Aug 09, 2008, 06:05 PM Lol ya there should be a guide. :D
There actually is a guide, which you can find here (http://www.civfanatics.com/misc/guides/file_upload). To be honest, it's not very easy to find, but it does contain some good info and screenshots.

Each citizen requires two food per turn. Keep in mind that the city center provides two food per turn, regardless of what terrain it's built on. Thus, a size 6 city requires 12 food per turn, of which 2 is yielded by the city itself. With the 6 citizens, you must reach the threshold lest your city starve.

Ok, so I would need at least 10 food icons to support the city. What would I do with extra food icons?

Grow in size and work more tiles. ;) (Any surplus food will be added to the food bar until you have enough to fill it, in which case you increase your population.)

Ok, thanks! :) What about specialists? Should I use them alot and how much food do they need?
I have another question. On the city screen what does the two numbers and food icons right beside the population bar mean?
Lol I have so many questions. XD
Kawalimus Aug 09, 2008, 06:41 PM Do you automate your workers? Those idiots would build windmills over all my mines when I used them. If you're on higher difficulties you're probably not doing that, but it's just a thought.
Another thing if your buildings are coming along too slow is Organized Religion civic. +25% bonus production for buildings in cities with your state religion. It's like having an extra forge in those cities.

Lol, no I dont automate my workers.
Oh ya, thats a good idea. But it has a high upkeep cost. XD
Ginger_Ale Aug 09, 2008, 07:04 PM Billyman, you can edit your posts in the bottom right hand corner, rather than creating an entirely new one (I've merged your existing successive posts).
Kawalimus Aug 09, 2008, 07:16 PM That upkeep cost isn't really a big deal, from my experience. It's well worth it if you have a lot to build. And courthouses/banks/markets/grocers are buildings that will help you with money, so it's all worth it. And don't forget about Spiral Minaret, if you have that your state religion buildings will give you money for building em too.
Billyman Aug 10, 2008, 01:42 PM I see. Well, thankyou all for your help. I am gonna go play now and use what I've learned here. :D
Bostock Aug 11, 2008, 07:49 AM Ok, thanks! :) What about specialists? Should I use them alot and how much food do they need?
All citizens, including specialists, eat the same amount of food: 2.
Specialists have IMO a rather low output directly except under special circumstances, but you still need to use them... a lot? maybe... to get ahead on higher levels, because...
...they create Great People Points,
...running scientists can give you science even when you are forced to run 0% science due to city upkeep costs,
...you sometimes want citizens that do something useful but do not produce any food because you are at the happiness cap, and
...in large cities a specialist really can sometimes give better output than any remaining tile, especially with the right wonders.
I have another question. On the city screen what does the two numbers and food icons right beside the population bar mean?
Food produced minus food consumed.
Lol I have so many questions. XD
Playing on Prince is a brave move for you :-)

Sure would be nice if a kind and generous Moderator would perhaps sticky it. I see a lot of people asking how to attach files and post screen shots.
