I get that cities have trade routes, and they give you gold. But how much gold? how do you get trade with other civs? How do you make the trade routes give you more money? Does war have any effect on trade routes?

Run your mouse over the trade route for example "Beijing +5" Put the mouse over that and it will give you a breakdown.

You need an open borders agreement with them. If they are overseas then you need to discover Astronomy.

You can build the basic wealth multipliers (Banks, Markets, etc.) as well as build harbors and custom houses. City size effects trade routes. The bigger the city the bigger the intake.

Yes. Put the mouse over the trade route as stated above and it will say "Prolonged Peace +100%". So yes it does effect them. You can't have a trade route when you are at war (You can't trade with the enemy is what I mean).

Hope I helped!

Trade routes give you :commerce: (commerce); not :gold: (gold)

There is a "sustained peace" bonus to trade routes.

Otherwise trade routes are chosen automatically by the game.
