View Full Version : Unit Preview Modern British Carrier
Kinboat Aug 02, 2002, 01:22 PM This model is based on the modern British Carrier the Invincible... It's designed smaller than the American Super-Carriers but has a pretty complete complement of Harrier jets... helicopters... and a marine assault force. I welcome any criticism as this is only my second sea unit and the model probably needs work.
Civ Commando Aug 02, 2002, 01:34 PM Nice :goodjob:
CivGeneral Aug 02, 2002, 01:47 PM Wow, Good work Kinboat :goodjob:. Cant wait for that carrier. I am going to use it as a light carrier (and use the game's as a super carrier .) By the looks of it It can only carry about 3 civ-aircraft.
Any way Kinboat. Can you make the German Leopard 2 Tank when you have finished with the carrier ;). The pictures can be found in this thread ;). (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=28655)
Smoking mirror Aug 02, 2002, 02:18 PM Very nice, I love the mini carrier- Are you planning on doing the Harrier also; I've been wanting to do it for some time, but I've got loads of other stuff to do.
I think an American super carrier would be a much better idea for an American UU, rather than the jet fighter.
Jimmyh Aug 02, 2002, 02:38 PM Stunning, Brilliant, Superb, can wait!
Fantastic job.:goodjob:
alpha wolf 64 Aug 02, 2002, 04:21 PM wonderful, simply wonderful
thomson_2001 Aug 02, 2002, 06:04 PM loks amazing, cant wait to see this unit !
Civanator Aug 02, 2002, 08:57 PM i have an idea for an attack animation. Maybe small harrier can come off and shoot missles towards the enemy while circling around above the carrier.
Kinboat Aug 02, 2002, 11:01 PM Interesting idea for an attack... Maybe I could make a plane take off and circle as a fidget... And just have the Anti-Aircraft defenses fire as the attack.... or maybe I'll do it your way. Maybe I'll do a harrier... at the moment I'm bogged down also so it'll be in the future if at all.
Donal Graeme Aug 02, 2002, 11:40 PM Good job with the Jump-Carrier, which is the military designation for this design. The majority of the worlds navys with Carriers use this design, flying Harriers or other VTOL aircraft. Only the US has true "super-carriers", but the UK is planning on designing and building two of its own. However, they didn't really take into account in Civ3 how choppers and VTOL aircraft work, so you can't make it so the carrier would only accept helicopters or VTOL planes. If that were a factor you could make this a more cost effective carrier. Unfortunately, without Airborne Early Warning Aircraft, this design will lack its biggest real-world defect.
hzm Aug 02, 2002, 11:52 PM Red Alert 2 has a harrier unit if anyone wanted to take screenshots of that unit. Although it might not really be a harrier, Westwood has always had a habit of renaming their units.
Dragon King Aug 03, 2002, 02:56 PM :eek:Great, At last, a decent British unit. I cant wait for this unit to be completed. I love my naval units, and i think that there is a lack of decent naval units, not just British. The pic looks great, and i cant think of anything to criticise it about, just i cant wait for it to be done as soon as possible:goodjob::goodjob:
:rolleyes:And since your at it, if you want...perhaps some British destroyers, frigates and submarines whan your done:D
Civanator Aug 03, 2002, 06:40 PM yah kinboat you can use the harrier idea for the fidget anim. the attack could be a second one too.
IceBlaZe Aug 03, 2002, 07:36 PM damn you talented modellers!
I want your talent! :)
dannyevilcat Aug 03, 2002, 09:31 PM Awesome unit! I really hope it has a sinking death.
Smoking mirror Aug 04, 2002, 11:07 AM I want the Harrier to be in the "play the world" so I'm going to do one today- it will be a good companion to the jumpcarrier.
Here is a preview of the unit (it's closer to the ground than the std jetfighter to refect it's VTOL role);
Smoking mirror Aug 04, 2002, 11:16 AM Iv'e been thinking about what sort of extra units people would like in the play the world expansion and I'm thinking of doing a russian HIND attack helicopter; I found some good drawing on the net, though there are some shapes in the design I'm going to have a little trouble with. Personaly I need a good russian Attack helicopter for my Cold war scenario, and I think every one would like one.
I found a good animation of the hind on a website; Keep in mind this is not my animation, but mine should look similar, I'm thinking a light tan for the colouring;

I fully agree, US jets are sold to other countries, but her super carriers are what allows her to project her militarty influence.
Nice work!
recon1591 Aug 04, 2002, 07:27 PM sm did a harrier and i was wondering when this unit will be done to go along with it.
sela1s1son Aug 04, 2002, 07:33 PM Well for the U.S. I think two UUs would be nice. A Nimitx class Carrier with an extra hold or two (maybe an extra MP?) and the Abrahms. I think Modern Countries should have 1 Modern UU as some of them get obsolete (some are obsolete relativley fast) and some are fairly old. I think the German Leapord shoud also be in there, (thus it would have two Armor UUs which would complement each other nicley). The Russians should get any one or two of the following:T-90, that one new Interceptor, or the Hind. The English should get one, the Harrier is one the comes to mind.
Wouldn't it be great if they added a flag for the Harrier to require a:City, Carrier, or English owned square (Plains, Grassland, Tundra, Desert, maybe forest) as a base of op? (Jungles, Hills, and Mountains would require an Air-Base) This could reflect the VTOL ability (the Flag would probably be a VTOL flag).
I'm thinking China should get one... I just don't know what. Maybe a cheaper Infanrty and/or Mech Infantry to reflect thier population?
recon1591 Aug 04, 2002, 07:44 PM To sm i found a file already made of the hind on a website that you can go by or redo i quess. but how do i upload the file to you.
CivGeneral Aug 04, 2002, 09:44 PM Looks like Smoking Mirror's Harrier jet would go with this unit perfictly :D.
Level Aug 05, 2002, 01:22 AM I think it needs a little texture and different colors other than that it looks great.
leonel Aug 05, 2002, 01:29 AM Ya know what? I think Smoking Mirror's idea of the carrier in Civ3 already being the American UU and the ordinary carrier here as the standard for all. The carrier here should have one movement rate short than the supercarrier to represent the supercarrier's ability to go anywhere in the world and exert it's influence and stuff. :D
Kinboat Aug 05, 2002, 07:22 PM Ok... I'm posting a preview of a harrier jet taking off from the carrier circling and then landing again... My problem (and I might have a solution) is that the animation gets cut off in the other directions, even at 240X240... Any suggestions? And my possible work around is to make this the attack B and have an attack A in which the carrier 'turns into the wind' so that all the second attacks are in the same direction... Does anyone know if the sea units can use more than one attack (don't think I've seen any that do)...
CivGeneral Aug 05, 2002, 07:26 PM The rotate before attacking would do. The ship rotates 90 degress counter clockwise. The ship turns (Facing the wind) and attacks (Plane flies and bombs the enemy ship). I this case since you dont want to have to do the attack animations over, Just have the default ship "rotate" 90 degrees Clockwise. Or post(PM me) the Default and the Attack animations and ill see what I can do.
Kinboat Aug 05, 2002, 07:34 PM But the flying plane gets chopped off when I turn the animation... it flies out of the frame... This direction is the only one that has the plane completely in the frame. Maybe it won't show up much in the game, I'll try it out.
CivGeneral Aug 05, 2002, 07:36 PM It might be possible if in the other frames the Plane has a shorter flight path.
Kinboat Aug 05, 2002, 10:31 PM Well I didn't think a tighter turn would look as good but I had to reverse the flight path anyway for the rotate to attack command so I tried it. This will fit in all eight directions... it's just a b*%&$ to animate because it's 24 frames long and all the edges in the model really slow down my system... plus the image program I'm using won't work with larger files, which basicly means I have to animate them in 3 sections and peice them together later... Anyway here's a preview of the final (?) attack animation. Let me know what you think.
dannyevilcat Aug 05, 2002, 11:44 PM Beautiful.
Level Aug 06, 2002, 12:11 AM Looks Great.
If you still have a problem make sure the path is above the ship and not next to it and the camera rotates around the center of both.
Smoking mirror Aug 06, 2002, 08:08 AM I realy like that animation- not many people realise how difficult it can be to do an extended animation. I like to keep it around ten frames (which is still 80 renders) for 24 frames thats over 190- and at 240x240 that can take a long time!
Also lights and transparent objects slow down rendering time; for a model that has only one light and no transparent objects in my program at 110x150 size rendering is almost instant- but my plane images need a massive 10 lights to get the shadow to look right (one distant light and 8 lights aranged in a circle around a central one- the circle of lights is a trick from beauty photography that gives skin a "glow" while breaking up shadows and providing a non harsh illumination- you can see it in magazines in closeup shots, if you look in the models eyes, the light highlight is often a ring of lights). With ten lights and several detailed semi transparent objects even a 110x150 render can take quite while.
Kinboat Aug 06, 2002, 08:44 AM Yep everything is attached to the carrier object and it all rotates around the same point... Great tip on the lighting Smoking Mirror, never thought of using that particular set-up... Maybe I'll try it in a future unit. And actually with one direction done I only have 168 frames to go :) Save me now! I might be done and posting the unit late tonight.
Vdog Aug 06, 2002, 01:35 PM :D
hzm Aug 06, 2002, 03:22 PM I know I will love this unit. The normal carrier is bigger in the game right?
Pablostuka Aug 06, 2002, 03:51 PM I love this carrier!!Great job, Kinboat!! I will use it for the Spanish Civ in my mod, as the Carrier for the Spanish (Yours looks like the "Príncipe de Asturias" aircraft carrier :D:D:D) Thanks!!
Damon Aug 06, 2002, 06:09 PM GREAT looking unit! keep it up kin!
Kinboat Aug 06, 2002, 09:45 PM Sorry I won't be able to post it tonight... having some problems with flicster I think... I hope I can get it wrapped up tomorrow.
Dragon King Aug 07, 2002, 12:04 PM Well you know what they say. Good things come to those who wait;) right Kinboat?
nonnob3 Aug 07, 2002, 12:48 PM OUTSTANDING!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D :D :D :D
Kinboat Aug 07, 2002, 09:54 PM Wow... that's big :) I've posted it now.
