I have a problem which is not solved by your civ3 reinstall problem solution i.e removal by editing the registry thru regedit.
Anyway i partly removed civ3 from my computer and on trying to reinstall it I get the message:- error extracting support files. The server threw an exception. And I cannot continue.
Does anyone have a solution to this. Any answers will be appreciated.

Not to be picky, but to make sure I understand what you did, can you point me to thread you are talking about?

On the reinstall you get this error, right? The files cannot be removed from the install disc and placed on the hard drive?
Others have suggested making sure the discs are clean; I don't know if this will help or not.

Sorry(!) the solution is on civ3/atari website. Here it is:-
http://www.atari.com/us/support/newfaq/civilizationiii.php?browser=1&issueNum=239&osType=WINXP&pageDisplay=MAIN#faq_prodissues
I cannot remove previous installation and fully reinstall

Good!
Now, if you ever get the urge to play Conquests, don't buy the Conquests expansion, because it will need to be patched also. Instead, buy Civ 3 Complete. It is a three-disk one-install of all three versions and each version fully patched. The default icon points to Conquests, but you can also play PTW and vanilla also.
