taillesskangaru Aug 20, 2008, 06:37 AM The Soviet Ekranoplan (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ekranoplan) is not strictly a ship, but I reckon it's worth a mention.
The world’s largest hydrofoil wasn’t really a hydrofoil at all. In fact, it was one of a series of unique machines called "ground effect" vehicles built by the Soviet Union beginning in the 1960s.
The Soviets had a monopoly on this fascinating technology, relying on a little-known principle of physics - the "ground effect" - in which a dense cushion of air hugging the ground can provide more lift to a vehicle than air at higher altitudes.
Hovering about 3 - 12 feet above the ground, these vehicles resemble Luke Skywalker’s levitating craft from Star Wars, and far more fuel-efficient than airplanes, helicopters, hydrofoil, or cars. And at 58 feet, the largest of these, the "Caspian Sea Monster" was given its distinctive name after CIA analyst saw it at the Caspian port of Baku in photos taken by spy satellites. The craft traveled at speeds of up to 240 mph, had a swiveling nose cone for cargo loading, and could carry up to as many as 150 passengers.

Pannonius Aug 20, 2008, 07:23 AM I don't like modern ships at all. They just can't compete with sail ships. Those ships had "something".

Not the Nimitzs though.

Bismarck? anybody? I think It was pretty cool
Taras Bulba Aug 22, 2008, 07:35 PM Bismarck? anybody? I think It was pretty cool
I can second that... the Bismarck was awesome.... not to mention, didn't it sink the HMS Hood? that ship was amazing too
NwabudikeMorgan Aug 22, 2008, 07:57 PM It did sink the hood: shot straight into the ammunition cache.
Taras Bulba Aug 22, 2008, 09:18 PM It did sink the hood: shot straight into the ammunition cache.
that doesn't mean it didn't sink it... it just means it shot at it, and made it EXPLODE because of a REALLY lucky shot
the Hood still sunk
GinandTonic Aug 22, 2008, 09:22 PM that doesn't mean it didn't sink it... it just means it shot at it, and made it EXPLODE because of a REALLY lucky shot
the Hood still sunk
Ironically her sister ship the Tirpitz survived after a shell did the same then failed to detonate. Luck is a biggie.
NwabudikeMorgan Aug 22, 2008, 09:27 PM @ taras: can you read? I said it DID sink the ship....
The tirpitz was almost unstoppable, the amount of effort the allies put into killing her was absurd
Taras Bulba Aug 22, 2008, 09:31 PM Ironically her sister ship the Tirpitz survived after a shell did the same then failed to detonate. Luck is a biggie.
well... part of the reason why the Hood sunk was because the front (it might've been the back) half of the ship didn't have upper deck armor (or reinforced armor at least)
the Hood was being re-fitted with stronger armor later, because it was too expensive to do it all at once. Battleships at that time usually had stronger side armor because of torpedoes, and past ship to ship fighting usually resulted in explosions on the side of the ship. with more recent technology, it allowed for ships to fire farther, and at longer ranges (the Bismarck had the upper hand on this weaponry) and as Hood was swerving in to get into attacking range for an easier kill, Bismarck began to start bombarding Hood as it turned in. Bismarck hit it, and with its weaker armor, hit the ammunition cache, and the Hood exploded.... and I mean exploded.... it was HUGE
as far as I know, German ships were heavily armored in all aspects
EDIT:
@ taras: can you read? I said it DID sink the ship....
oops..... my selective reading is kicking in.... I feel retarded now

Is it really that bad?
taillesskangaru Aug 25, 2008, 04:22 AM Is it really that bad?
Some people think it's utter rubbish. It's an interesting theory nonetheless. The fleet did exist and made seven voyages as far as Africa. Ming China certainly has the capability, if historical evidence and records are anything to go by.

privatehudson Aug 25, 2008, 09:13 AM The Great Eastern was broken up on the shoreline about 1/4 of a mile from where I was born. One of the top masts was taken by Liverpool FC and used as a flagpole.

I like side by side (sort of) turrets on the front end, but they should've made those guns dual turrets and had more of them. Make it more like the Age of Dreadnoughts (and Sail): More guns!
I don't think it's that ugly, though I do think the command bridge should be set higher up. But you know officers, anything to make it easier for them :mischief:

Fuso Class (Fuso, Haruna, and Yamashiro)

The Fusos in particular were fantastic ships, I'd dare say the best before the Fast Battleships of late WWII.
GinandTonic Aug 26, 2008, 04:12 AM Warspite may not be the best looking but it is the best name by far.
Cutlass Aug 27, 2008, 07:40 PM USS Salem. WWII built heavy cruisers took on the same basic lines of Iowa battleships. They were bigger, but weighed less, than many battleships. The is a Des Moines-class heavy cruisers were the first big gun ships to use case ammo in the main guns (8 inch) instead of a projectile and powder bags and could fire at 10 second intervals instead of the usual approx 30 seconds for other big guns.
I think it's the only heavy cruiser still afloat and open to the public.

Saying this as a fellow American, I think their Military history is better than us. Yes they were bad in WW2 and Franco-Prussan War but we were bad at Vietnam and Iraq.
Eran of Arcadia Sep 07, 2008, 07:25 PM Different wars, different situations. I think Iraq and Vietnam for us is more like Algeria and Vietnam for them.
Anyways, I thought that relentlessly and seriously overanalysing flippant remarks was my thing? Well, I guess there is room for one more . . .

The French were also bad in Vietnam and Algeria.

Compared to the ships at the time, there was no rival for this fast, multiple gunner, troop carrier and ocean travel capability vessel.

Cheezy the Wiz Sep 10, 2008, 06:27 PM Steph, is that a French First-Rate?
I thought most aircraft carriers launched the planes from the the back towards the front... not visa-versa
I can think of 0 aircraft carriers which do this. They always launch forward, and into a headwind, to give planes the least chance of stalling.
Steph Sep 11, 2008, 01:33 AM Yes, that's a 104-guns first rate, built in 1669, under the reign of Louis the XIV.
It's well known by ship model builder, and is one the best looking French ship of the time, if not the best.
