For those of you that were wondering what that JeuxVideo review says in English, I did a rough translation.
Some years after creating Civilization, Sid Meier remade that with Colonization. But, while the first was a big success and had several continuations, the second sank in forgetfulness, despite undeniable good qualities. This injustice today is repaired since Colonization returns at last in a new version that benefits from the motor of Civilization IV.
Colonization is not strictly speaking an extension of Civ IV. It employs the same motor, and resembles it therefore a lot, but it is a matter well of an independent game that uses its own mechanisms. Of course, the two games divide, there are a number of common points: a gameplay in turn by turn, based on the foundation of colonies then on their development, and many interaction possibilities with the other players (diplomacy, commerce, war. ..). The principal difference is the historic context. While Civilization IV covers a vast period going Antiquity to the close future, Colonization concentrates on an era a lot more reduced one: the conquest of the New World.
A party begins therefore in the year of grace,1492, and finishes itself at the end of the 18th century, three hundred years later (and as much turns of game). Before all, it suits to choose a colonial power between the French, the English, the Spaniards and the Dutch one. Then one embarks a pioneer in a caravel and whoosh! Choose the direction, the American coasts or Caribbean. Once on the spot, it suits to choose the ideal location to found a city, preferably a coastal one to begin. But alas, this New World is not empty, several peoples live it already, as the Sioux, the Iroquois, the Incas... Do not panic, at the start the local tribes are rather peaceful, indeed even friendly. Progressive of your territorial expansion, they risk nevertheless to begin looking at you crosswise, it will be necessary then to impose by the diplomacy or by the force. Keep nevertheless to the spirit that they can be precious allies and that it is better to keep its troops to fight the Old World . In fact, the final goal of Colonization is not the conquest of America but well the independence with respect to the nation's mother.
From the settling of the party, the King will become more and more urgent. Its consequences can quickly reveal themselves quickly. The settlers go therefore to think more of liberty and will eventually, if all happens well, by to rebel against the guardianship of the Old World. But do not let this happen too quickly. At first, the relations with the King are essential, for it is him that furnishes the precious arms that will come to increase your population. Of your side, you can bring for him the precious resources of the New World, that will give money. Those that are poor at first, such as tobacco, sugar, cotton, the furs, you can transform them respectively in cigars, in rum, in fabric and in coats, which proves itself well more profitable. For that, it is necessary evidently to construct the adequate buildings, and there to place if possible the workers more qualified. It is completely conceivable to let wood be cut by a foreigner , but it would be much better will be employ lumberjacks to cut wood.
Another element to take into account is the point gain in five different domains: commerce, exploration, war, politics and religion. The score meters increase according to your actions, but it is equally possible to affect a city to produce a type of points instead erecting a construction. These fine points unblock the "Founding Fathers" that grant precious bonuses, such as a growth of the production of tobacco, an additional boat or Indian convert. They could be of Cortés to the Marquis de LaFayette while going through Pocahontas, there are some fifty altogether. All these beautiful mechanics are perfectly oiled and work wonderfully, and Colonization reveals itself therefore also taking such addiction as Civilization IV.
Please point out any unidentifiable words, as this is a rough translation.
