View Full Version : Colonization music
Malignant Aug 21, 2008, 01:03 AM I for one loved the soundtrack/score for the original colonization. The music immersed me into that time period and I REALLY REALLY HOPE they use the same score but updated of course. I'm hoping they recreate the music using real instruments it would kick ass.
Patrick555 Aug 21, 2008, 06:05 AM Music have be from civilization IV era classical mixed with music Indian. But not on 100%.
Lord Shadow Aug 21, 2008, 02:04 PM TheMystic once posted a list of all the 117 tracks in the remake's music folder, but that's gone now. There were a bunch of the old tunes there, and a lot of new ones. Especially classical music.
Bad Brett Aug 21, 2008, 05:26 PM Especially classical music.
Which sucks, even though I love it in general. I don't like the Civ IV soundtrack at all. It's just background music. A soundtrack should be catchy (Like in the original Colonization and Dune II to name a couple). I want the happy flute and violin tunes. Do you think they would mind if I re-create some of the missing ones?
Bad Brett Sep 11, 2008, 06:48 AM Here are some tunes I found on youtube:
Jine the Cavalry (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HDq09oSt9o0)
Road to Boston (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TmuQgBf8ZIc)
Old Joe Clark (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gKAtLiKoMLg)
Sailor's Hornpipe (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L_yBQnBPToE)

Agree!
Some Civ4 music simply makes me feel tired. The good-old colonization music still have great impact on me.
Now if they could make the musics that feel like Sid Meier's Pirates, that would be really great !
Gliese 581 Sep 16, 2008, 12:36 AM I agree colonization 1s music is much better than any I've had in a civ game.
You know it's good when you use the ingame jukebox and listens repeatedly to your favourites.
in CIV there are some I like and some I hate but overall nothing very exciting.
comtedemeighan Sep 16, 2008, 04:09 AM I loved the music from the original I hope this will have great traditional music as well.......
themadz Sep 16, 2008, 11:35 AM the music i saw in the gameplay videos were downright depressing.
they should at the very least update the songs from the original colonization. they still bring a smile to my face and honestly i would almost buy the game just for that.
Supr49er Sep 16, 2008, 11:52 AM The music was really good.
Welcome to the Forums themadz.
Gliese 581 Sep 16, 2008, 05:02 PM I especially liked the military march tunes played during the war for independence. :)
themadz Sep 16, 2008, 09:43 PM the two hornpipes song from the original colonization is pretty much featured in the pirates of the caribbean dead mans chest.
if you do a youtube search for two hornpipes pirates then you will hear it.
i wish they do something like that with all the songs.
especially the military ones. those were awsome to get you in the mood for the wars.
Gliese 581 Sep 17, 2008, 12:13 AM Thanks for the tip. I have some of the old tunes in midi format but not all of them have unique names just "independence 1" "independence 2" etc.
archeide Sep 19, 2008, 01:48 PM Hello everyone,
I was a big fan of Colonization too. Civilization was more epic, but there were really immersive feelings in Colonization. The fact that the game was more micromanagement oriented, and especially the traditionnal music, makes me feel a bit in the life of the early pionneers of the new world.
I will really miss thoses musics in the new Colonization I think. So I have made some mp3 from the old MIDI using the MIDIg software synthetizer. It sounds more realistic than other MIDI synthetisers but some instruments still need work.
I don't know it is legal to put link to this here, I would like if possible. I can send to people interested anyway.

Berba Sep 20, 2008, 03:32 AM The music in the 3 gameplay videos, from gamespot, is great!!
I :gold: it!!!
archeide Sep 22, 2008, 04:56 PM I have put some MP3s I made with MidiG and some good soundfonts, from original Colonization MIDIs :
Bonny at morn (http://backinthepast.com/colmusic/Bonny%20Morn.mid.mp3)
Fountain Music (http://backinthepast.com/colmusic/Fountain%20Music.mid.mp3)
Cornwall (http://backinthepast.com/colmusic/Cornwall.mid.mp3)
Fisher's hornpipe (http://backinthepast.com/colmusic/Fisher%27s%20Hornpipe.mid.mp3)

York fusiliers / Independance 1 (http://backinthepast.com/colmusic/Independence%201.mid.mp3)
Hope you enjoy it :goodjob:
Lord Shadow Sep 22, 2008, 05:21 PM Awesome work! :trophy:
I had some .mod music files, but they were only a little bit better than the original MIDIs. These you've made here sound considerably better. Make the rest!
PS: Are you using MIDIG 2.03?
archeide Sep 22, 2008, 05:48 PM Hello Lord Shadow!
Thanks for you reply!
I have used the latest midig 2.05a with several additional instrument soundfonts i collected from various sources. The most difficult instrument to get is the fiddle, i had to use 3 different soundfonts, because no one sounded good for all songs. The biggest instrument soundfont takes 10 Mb for itself (the violin in Bonny at Morn), overall i used nealy 200Mb of soundfonts.
snoopy369 Sep 22, 2008, 08:11 PM Very nice as well... Fisher's Hornpipe was very nearly a perfect match (but better quality of course!!). Amazing what you can do with a bit of effort and a lot of talent :goodjob:
morchuflex Sep 23, 2008, 06:58 AM I have put some MP3s I made with MidiG and some good soundfonts, from original Colonization MIDIs :
Great job!
The funny thing is, I hadn't played Col for years, and when I recently reinstalled it and tried a couple games, I was appalled to hear how crudely the music sounded. It wasn't much more sophisticated than a computer startup beep. But my imagination had transformed my memories into something much more refined, something very much like what you did. :)
Many thanks!
archeide Sep 23, 2008, 08:30 AM Thanks for your answers.
morchuflex: indeed, like the old graphics with big pixels seemed very nice to me...
You can download all songs from here:
Original Colonization MP3s (http://backinthepast.com/colmusic/)
I have temporaily put a playlist file, so you can hear it from my server:
Original Colonization songs (http://backinthepast.com/colmusic/colmusic.m3u)

Just finished downloaded everything. Thanks again! It will help me wait until Col2 reaches France.
BTW, you're in Paris too? That's funny. May I ask where?
archeide Sep 23, 2008, 09:12 AM I'm not really in Paris, but in Maisons-Alfort (94).
Good to see that there are several french colonialists to build la Nouvelle France.
player1 fanatic Sep 23, 2008, 01:51 PM Great job!

Maybe you had just simple Sound Blaster then.
MIDI music, like in Colonization, sounds much worse with older Sound Blasters cards, compared to better ones that are capable of having Wavetable Synthesis for playing MIDI music.

That might explain it...
Lord Shadow Sep 23, 2008, 02:31 PM Yeah.
After all, MIDIs aren't music like MP3s or WAVs. They're actually scores with instructions that get sent to your sound card, which has several instruments stored in its synthesizing program. According to those indications, your card 'plays' the music itself according to its configuration, instead of providing the playback of a recorded song. That's why MIDIs sound different in PCs with different sound cards.
Matte979 Sep 23, 2008, 03:11 PM Thanks, brings back great memories.
themadz Sep 23, 2008, 07:34 PM so i was playing the new one.
and god.. the music blows harder than i could have imagined!
i have yet to hear any of the classical songs.
it's all downright depressing music
but the biggest insult has to be the music they use for combat. it sounds like someone went to a re-enactment with a tape recorder.
you can hear crowds in the back and not only that, the music sounds like it's in mono. in road to boston you can hear that the band is moving from one area to another.
how can they screw it up sooo badly. like really. convert the old midi files to a new standard is all they really had to do.
morchuflex Sep 23, 2008, 11:30 PM ...The music sounds like it's in mono...
In Civ4, by default, the sound is set to mono. Have you checked your options?
Phobic Sep 24, 2008, 01:05 AM so i was playing the new one.

I assumed the crowds were supposed to be soldiers.
comtedemeighan Sep 24, 2008, 02:43 AM I really like the music for the New game its great the even have 'The World Turned upside down' which is awesome :D
1EyedKing Sep 24, 2008, 02:58 AM I'm liking the music a lot; the classical stuff kicks in after a couple of hours of playing, and the military fanfare sounds improvised enough; they've even included the Yankee Doodle!
Also, in case you haven't noticed, the themes played for the leaders of a same nation are actually reprises of a same motif.
Kathandrion Sep 25, 2008, 01:18 PM Oh, thank you so much for the music! I don't have Col2 yet, but gutted to hear that they don't seem to have kept the old tunes in some shape or form!
Interesting to hear about the midi file definition. All the midi music from games sounded best on my Dos/Windows 3.1 computer with a Sound Blaster, compared to how my XP interprets the music.
ColPaladin Sep 25, 2008, 04:07 PM Guys, when I get the music, what do I DO with it? I'm not sure how to put it into the game. Also, if you want some great music for this game, try the music from Imperialism 1; an almost classic song. I'm putting the background music for "Shakespear In Love" in this game too (If I can eve figure out how to do it, that is).
brianshapiro Sep 25, 2008, 05:53 PM The original Colonization music was entertaining, but the music in the new game is pretty and is designed more to work with the other background sounds. So I think its pretty disrespectful to say it 'blows'. It wouldn't be bad if there were a few light tunes that came up from time to time, I was playing while my TV was on, and when a commercial came up that had music from the original Colonization, I mistakenly thought it was part of the game
1EyedKing Sep 26, 2008, 04:39 AM Some of the new music is taken straight from old, 17th century ballads.
Take for example Mattie Groves (http://www.contemplator.com/child/mattie.html), Blow ye winds blow (http://www.contemplator.com/america/blowind.html), Johnie Scot (http://www.contemplator.com/child/johnscot.html), Earl Brand (http://www.contemplator.com/child/earlbrand.html) and many more (http://www.contemplator.com/america/).
I personally it's very inspiring, though I would have definitely loved some Spanish flamencos and Portuguese tunas.
Common Sensei Sep 26, 2008, 05:08 AM I submitted an archive to the file database which contains the tunes ripped from Colonization for Windows, along with xml files to add them to the game's soundtrack as well.
Feel free to compare. (http://forums.civfanatics.com/downloads.php?do=file&id=10765)
ColPaladin Sep 26, 2008, 01:47 PM Would someone be so kind as to tell me/us how you get the music you are showing us, into the game please
cephalo Sep 26, 2008, 02:09 PM I generally prefer the old music, but one of the new songs I really like. That one with the crazy native american chant is very cool.
Common Sensei Sep 26, 2008, 04:20 PM Would someone be so kind as to tell me/us how you get the music you are showing us, into the game please
Take a look at the mod in the link I provided above and read the readme.txt file. It will tell you where to put the files so that you can hear them in the game.
Zhahz Sep 26, 2008, 04:31 PM I generally disable music in all games. There's this one series called UFO Afterxxx where the music doesn't drive me insane and I let it play. For Col2 I lasted maybe 2 hours before hearing the same stuff over and over pushed me over the edge. I turn down ambient in Col2 since going into the city screen is an auditory onslaught.
Aquilifer Sep 26, 2008, 05:31 PM I'm actually pretty surprised, i once took a class on 18th century war music (lol liberal arts) and a lot of the songs I was exposed to in that class wound up in this game! Although I can't say I'm particularly happy to hear "Chester" after the 5 or 6 different versions i heard in that class :(
Also the title screen music is pretty awesome. It's a shame that nothing else in the game really sounds like that.
brianshapiro Sep 28, 2008, 05:55 PM Hey I realized that some of the original music is in the current game, play as the Dutch and you'll come across some familiar music.
Astat Sep 13, 2009, 09:27 PM Necroing an old thread to say that I liked the music in the original Colonization a lot.
But the new music is even better. The tunes aren't that catchy, but they sound more agreeable. And it's quite a large collection there.
