This is a pretty simple one that's been bugging me. I can't use any mods because they crash while starting a game.

If you are running the latest patch 3.17 (I think that is what it is.) A lot of the mods aren't compatible. Check in the Mod topics to see what version they run in, quite a few are still only working with 3.13.

I'd guess that is probably the issue.

I tried Fall From Heaven, Revolution and Beginning, all of which are updated to the latest patch as far as I'm aware.

Just at a quick glance, BTS Beginning requires Beyond the Sword to have the newest patch (3.17) so if you are current on that..well I don't know why it would crash on you.
Revolutions looks like it is for the newest patch as well.
