My rant:
Someone's probably making this thread and mine will probably be closed.
CCRunner Aug 27, 2008, 09:32 PM My school has a very nice webpage where I can access the teacher directory and link to all of my online grades. Actually not all of them  My science teacher decided that she wants her grades to be separate. So now I have a better grade page but It's 1000 times harder to get to. I'd much rather just have a plain white report easily than have a colorful report hard.
Trajan12 Aug 27, 2008, 09:33 PM I can't wait til I get rid of this laptop and get something more, robust.
And I wanted to give it a chance, but Drama has to be the worst choice of electives I have ever made. I will try to get out of it promptly.
Blah blah blah Detroit sucks. I haven't ranted that in too long.
Theige Aug 27, 2008, 09:39 PM . .. .. .. . bats man. Get the . .. .. .. . out of my room.
Their . .. .. .. . is everywhere. On my bed, on my towel. I slept in a hotel room last night.
And show yourselves you . .. .. .. .ing . .. .. .. .. .. .. ..
I've been sitting here all night with a broom and they won't come out now.
choxorn Aug 27, 2008, 09:51 PM Go away, rain. I'm trying to enjoy the last week of summer.
kaos429 Aug 27, 2008, 10:01 PM I am going to rant, no predict, that it will snow in Calgary this weekend. The forcast calls for 13 degrees C on Sunday, 56ish for you Yanks. But knowing Calgary, it will get no higher that 4, which means snow on Monday morning and more crapy drivers on the road. So much for summer and global warming for this year.
Desmond Hawkins Aug 27, 2008, 10:02 PM @kaos. I swear I almost got hypothermia riding to work in the rain yesterday. It felt pretty close to freezing early in the morning.
LesCanadiens Aug 27, 2008, 10:05 PM I have to work seven consecutive days at my job, starting tonight.

I felt the effects of Fall in the air after the hot spell at the beginning of last week. I hear ya. When the rain fell last Friday, it was like Calgary instantly forgot how to drive, just wait for snowfall.
Here's hoping for a nice long Indian Summer, into May.
Leonel Aug 27, 2008, 10:11 PM I hate street racers! Especially the latino version! Riding my rear when I obey the speed laws and flipping me off.
I should have gone 5 mph below the speed limit!

I hate them too, but I love pissing them off. There is no greater pleasure than blocking a young punk from driving as fast he would like. Try a little operant conditioning: they tail you closer, you drive slower; they back off, you drive faster.

Oh yes! I've been thinking of doing that actually.
JustinianVII Aug 28, 2008, 01:26 AM Oh yes! I've been thinking of doing that actually.
Another idea...if one's behind you, your side of the road is 2 lanes and there's a car in the other lane, drive relatively even with the other car, leaving no gap. Great way to stymie speeder/weaver types (those drivers piss me off, too)
Taras Bulba Aug 28, 2008, 08:04 AM I have a test the first day of school for AP Bio, then a Lab the next day, then another test
LucyDuke Aug 28, 2008, 09:55 AM Rant: I miss my thread's title. That makes me laugh every time I hear or see it, and it's fun to yell at people for no reason. Now I don't get to see it any more. :(
There aren't any sort of zoning ordinances preventing people from building right up to the property line?
Any idea of whether or not you'll have to share a driveway with your new neighbors?
Short story: It's four feet away, he got a variance, and no, our driveway is not adjacent to his property.
I've always lived in the same house, all my life. It's got three separate apartments. When I was very small, my parents and I lived in the basement apartment, my great-grandmother, who owned the house, lived in one of the upstairs apartments, and her daughter, my grandmother, lived in the other. My great-grandmother always babysat all of her great-grandchildren all the time so I grew up living with my cousins all the time. It was awesome.
Our house is on the corner, on a double lot. We've got a decent backyard by our neighborhood's standards. Next door to us lived a pair of old people, the Millers. Mr. and Mrs. Miller were old as hell. They had one daughter, I don't remember her name, and a giant pile of grandchildren. The Millers' house was on a triple lot and they had an awesome backyard just adjacent to ours, with a lot of awesome trees, where my cousins and I would play with their grandchildren. It was totally awesome.
Then Mrs. Miller got old and died.
There's another long substory about how my grandmother and my great-grandmother died, but they're irrelevant. In short, my grandmother's brain developed a supersaturation of gin and was shipped off to a nursing home, and my family moved into her apartment, (grandma died somewhere thereafter) then my great-grandmother got sick and died and after a lot of infighting and drama, my parents bought everyone else's share of the house. They fixed up the second upstairs apartment and now it's rented out. I've now got the basement apartment. Woo.
Mr. Miller had always been crazy, but after his wife died he got crazier. Not dangerous-crazy, just silly-crazy where he'd tell you about the spacewomen that he saw conspiring in the street, that kind of thing.
I guess the Millers' daughter decided that Mr. Miller was too crazy to live by himself, so he got shipped off to a nursing home, and their house was sold.
Anyway, everything's been downhill since everyone started dying. A couple of yuppies moved in to the Millers' house, they were reasonably okay people at first and they had a beautiful dog.
Then they had all the trees cut down and I wished death upon them. There were so many trees in their yard, and they were such beautiful, old trees, they were healthy, happy trees and they were not an impediment to playing with the dog in the yard, they were beautiful. After they cut down all the trees I hated them and I didn't bring my dog over to play with their dog anymore.
Then the stupid tree-removing yuppies decided to move to Las Vegas, after they cut down the trees. So they moved to Las Vegas and sold the house and I hate them.
We couldn't tell for a while who had bought the house - the for sale sign was gone but the house was empty. Wondered for a while, never saw anyone over there.
'Til one day in the mail there was a notice that the owner of the property in question was seeking a zoning variance to knock down the old house, divide the lot into two lot-and-a-half pieces, and build two new houses. I'm not sure why this needed a variance, but it did. Several of our neighbors went to the hearing and in the end he was denied that variance. So he tried to get another one - now he wanted to leave the house that's there, and build a new house on each side of it for a total of three houses. At that hearing, I guess they decided that he couldn't build two new houses, but he could build one new house on our side.
Also may I note that this assbag lives in basically the wealthiest part of Cranston, and he does not now and never has had plans to live in this neighborhood. It's just money to him.
My father came back from the hearing with copies of their plans. He'd protested because, not only is that density inappropriate in our neighborhood, the proposed house is going to stand four feet from the property line, and their driveway is going to butt right up against our property, which means that when they excavate for it, there's no way for them to avoid wacking up our front garden. But the assbag got the variance. And we knew it was coming, but we didn't know when, and sure enough this week they've started digging the foundation.
I am going to cause trouble on that construction site. I'm not sure precisely what I'm going to do, nothing too terrible, but I'm open to suggestions.

Gogf Aug 28, 2008, 12:31 PM I wanted to write my college app essay today, but I can't come up with a topic that I find acceptable.
downtown Aug 28, 2008, 12:43 PM I am having trouble getting the utilities turned on for my new apartment. I can hardly wait to move in, since I've basically been living out of two suitcases since early March...so another few day delay just sucks even more.
LucyDuke Aug 28, 2008, 01:16 PM Crap crap crap crap crap crap crap crap.
I'm not sure this is actually the case, I need to go home and check, but if what I think is the case is actually the case, I'm a total moron with a big problem.
Last night I wanted to copy some files from my computer to my USB memory stick. I had too much stuff on the stick to fit the new stuff, so I copied all of it to a folder on my desktop, then went through the stick and deleted the files I didn't need. I had them backed up in the folder on the desktop. Then I copied the files that I needed onto the stick.
But I just popped in the stick here at work and it's showing me files that are not right. They're wrong! They're the wrong files! So I'm worried that when I thought I was deleting the files off the stick, I was actually deleting them out of the backup folder...
I'm not sure, though, because I think these files aren't the ones I left on the stick. I'm really confused. I think the two different computers are reading the stick differently. I need to go home and make sure I didn't delete any of those files. 'Cause if I did, oh crap.

One to each of you, of course. You can choose to think of what I wrote above if you don't understand. If you do, you understand that the reason I posted is just the same as yours.
:)
Eran of Arcadia Aug 28, 2008, 01:41 PM Actually, it isn't permanent because of the way they archive these threads, so it wasn't my motivation. I was being . . . ironic, or something.
LucyDuke Aug 28, 2008, 01:43 PM You posted because you wanted to gripe that subscription posts are lame?
Eran of Arcadia Aug 28, 2008, 01:44 PM Yes, but since I had already subscribed, I wasn't being hypocritical.
Angst Aug 28, 2008, 01:46 PM Oh, forgot that possibility... Woops...

God I hate that. When I have my external hard drive open and a folder open and I can't tell which is which. What I hate even MORE is when I'm trying to copy one thing to the other and accidentally cut it from one.
salty mud Aug 28, 2008, 02:09 PM My good friend of mine (who happens to be female :groucho:) has gone away for the week to Spain... and needless to say I am missing her like hell. I'm missing her so much, I feel like I am not missing her and don't really like her. I fight back against this and think that I am missing her and really do admire her. It's all so confusing and unnecessery.
Curse Spain and my teenage hormonal urges! [pissed]
Gilder Aug 28, 2008, 02:14 PM long rant
That was happening quite a bit back near my old old house when I still lived in it. People bought property near it not to live in it, but to simply develop the surrounding land around it. There were quite a few old folks around there who owned property too, and having met thier kids, thier probably going to do the same thing, sell it off to make a quick buck.
Hell my dirtbag relatives who moved in after us wanted to a build a house on my grandmother's old gardens.
But I don't live there any more, so I could care less.
My rant: IRS sucks.
Edit: Oh, and the people across in the street practicing for thier band are really bad. And loud.

Well, I spent last week on vacation away from my girlfriend . . . it made it that much better when we were able to see each other again.
(I suspect I do not mean by "that" what most people would mean.)

Gooblah Aug 28, 2008, 04:45 PM Having a sinus headache isn't fun. It's even worse when you have to teach kids with one. And then drive while being tailgated by some skinny white "gangsta" kids in a huge SUV with the radio to a max. I was ready to start some roadrage, but my street came up.

silver 2039 Aug 29, 2008, 11:23 AM I shaved a few days ago, but now my facial pubic hair is regraowing. But its still pubic and not thick and manly like it needs to be. I must shave it again.
LucyDuke Aug 29, 2008, 11:36 AM Was it really horse poop? Or was it just regular dog poop, or something?
It was horse poop. I wash-rinse cycled her three times. Then used special doggie fur conditioner. It took like an hour. She did not enjoy the process. I hope she learns to associate rolling in horse poop with hour-long baths.
But now she's clean and soft and she smells good. :) I love clean doggies. :)

Its facial hair that looks like pubes. Thats what my friends say anyway. I guess I should take it as a hint to shave.
raketooy Aug 29, 2008, 11:57 AM My watch is broken.
salty mud Aug 29, 2008, 12:10 PM The problem is thus: I have a lell of a lot of coursework to be doing, but I can't do it. Why's that, you might ask. Well, there a multiple reasons. Firstly, I am completely and utterly unable to decipher what we must do on this project. Secondly, from what I can gather, it is uninteresting and totally pointless. Thirdly, it requires too much effort on my part. Laziness, I hear you mutter. Apparantley, we have to visit various supermarket chains and make comparisons on the types of food they serve. What food? Good question. What supermarkets? Even better question. The real predicament is yet to come: I've had all summer to work on this and haven't (because I couldn't... see above) without teacher communication. We return to school next week, and I feel she'll be wanting this work as soon as possible. So, my options are as follows. Either do it all now, and try to grasp the sitation as best I can, or return to school with it unfinished, and get the help I require, shortening my time to do the assignment by another 50% or so.
I do regret studying this subject for GCSE now. :(
Ekolite Aug 29, 2008, 12:28 PM Well supermarkets generally sell similiar things. Can't you just go to a supermarket, note down a few prices, brands etc, see what fresh food they sell. Stuff like that?
What subject is it? Food Tech?
Anyway, onto my rant.
Why is my part of England always cloudy and dull? All I want to do for the rest of the summer holidays is sit outside and sunbathe so that I might be slightly tanned for when I start college but I can't. I wish I was still on holiday. France is so much nicer then England. Shame about the language though, if it wasn't for the french and the high prices then France would be ideal. I want to move abroad when I'm older (or now would be nice actually) but anywhere much hotter then south france is too hot for me and I speak only english and a small amount of french. Why must the world suck so much? Why must all English speaking countries be too hot or too cold? Why?

No, because I have to specifically do something which I am not privy to.
And correct.

Bigfoot3814 Aug 29, 2008, 12:46 PM Secondly, from what I can gather, it is uninteresting and totally pointless.
Well that pretty much comes with the territory.
Thirdly, it requires too much effort on my part. Laziness, I hear you mutter.
I mutter no such thing. Summer is not a time for one to be futzing around grocery stores with clipboards and such.
So, my options are as follows. Either do it all now, and try to grasp the sitation as best I can, or return to school with it unfinished, and get the help I require, shortening my time to do the assignment by another 50% or so.
Disregarding the sheer asininity of this assignment, here's my advice. If I were you I would try to just throw together some incomplete thing. Enough to show that you made some consious effort, but not enough to bust your ass over. The teacher will hopefully see that you tried and be more willing to help you out.
Try comparing random-ass things like prices, displays, brands and location. That's what I'd do. Actually, I probably wouldn't have signed up for this loony toon class of yours in the first place! :crazyeye:
salty mud Aug 29, 2008, 01:06 PM If your advice is genuine and forthright, I shall follow it. Maybe the teacher will take pity on my pathetic but sure effort at my assignment. Maybe she might just scream and fail me. Who knows.
To be frank, who cares?
Masquerouge Aug 29, 2008, 01:07 PM Man the partisan ship is now cruising at full speed on the CFsea.
Here are the top partisan things that get on my nerve:
- saying Barack HUSSEIN Obama, BHO, and in general feeling you have to mention Hussein every time you mention Obama
- saying John McBush, George McCain, and in general feeling you have to mention Bush every time you mention McCain
- putting the highlight on every single slip of the tongue each candidate make and trying to pass it as a major gaffe that will forever ruin his chances
- the total inability to admit that the candidate you do not support might be right on some issues
- the total inability to admit that the candidate you support might be wrong on some issues
- the total inability to acknowledge that people who do not support your candidate are rational human beings, and not ignorant morons
- the firm belief that you are not partisan, but your opponent's supporters are
- the firm belief that your opponent is suffering from some sort of a vast media conspiracy
I'm sure I forgot a bunch. Basically, I really don't like the fact that elections turn people into slightly retarded, mildly evil, mindless drones

Hitti-Litti Aug 29, 2008, 01:24 PM Is this a cryptic answer to a straight-forward question?
Yes.
In Finland we use the same word for "he" and "she"(the word is "hän", though while speaking most of people say "se", that means "it").
Mirc Aug 29, 2008, 01:26 PM I hate Finnish.
I remember my Finnish friends always told me that him/her is one single word in Finnish, as they used to do this mistake quite often in speaking.
In fact, my post was mostly a joke, a kind of "I can't miss the opportunity to ask that question". ;) No hard feelings. :p

Cheezy the Wiz Aug 29, 2008, 10:30 PM Whatever moron Firaxis designer thought it was an idea to have the insanely long anarchy time that Civ 3 has when changing governments should be taken out back and beaten. First, I lost six turns so I could go from Monarchy to Absolute Monarchy. It doesn't take a neurosurgeon to figure out that such a thing is competely and utterly unrealistic, and just downright stupid. I can understand it taking a while to go from that Absolute Monarchy to Communism, but 7 turns? I've worked all game to keep the tech lead I have, and even with Theory of Evolution and Edison's Lab, I won't be able to catch back up to my pre-revolution tech lead. So thanks again, Firaxis, for taking the wonderful happy sunflower pretty fantastic gem that is Civ 3 Conquests and throwing this great pustule of madness that is between-government Anarchy into it, and tainting the greatness of your magum opus. I spit on you.

I hate being the resident psychologist for everyone. Later on when I recovered from it, we started talking about religion (only time I can stomach the issue is when I am drunk) and stuff relating that. I've totally smashed his arguments and won the debate which was highly reminiscent of OT discussions on religion. Then we packed up and went home with the promise we'd go back for the booze we left behind and go to the 80's party that is tonight. Not sure if I want to subject myself to that but it's my last night out before school starts and there's nothing else in town. Oh bugger...

Where I go to school, "honor roll" is considered 90's. While I didn't manage that in all my classes, that's not really the most important part.
In order to get into most AP and college-level classes, your average from all 3 years has to be a certian number. For example, I couldn't take AP Physics next year if I wanted to because of my 9th grade biology grade bringing down the science average. It's complete bull and isn't fair, but that's how it works. Now, I'm perfectly content with AP Environmental Science this year along with plenty of other advanced classes, but it is one less option available to me.

Firstlady Aug 30, 2008, 07:53 PM I went to watch a local high school football game last night, and this kid got injured during the second quarter. Two guys nailed him pretty hard and his helmet popped off. He got up and wobbled to the sidelines before collapsing and laid on the bench the rest of the game. Towards the very end of the fourth quarter the ambulance, firetrucks, and all those people finally showed up (shouldn't they have been on standby or something?!) and this morning the kid was pronounced dead. He was only a sophomore.

how is it beneficial to THEM to sue? how is it beneficial to anyone?
were the safety features inadequate? if so, I can understand it. but it sounds as though it was a normal football game, with normal equipment, etc.

If the other team's players acted recklessly, or out of the spirit of the game, to cause it, they have a good enough reason to sue.

The school let that kid go lie on the bench. There were no medical professionals there to make sure he was alright, nor did they attempt to get any help. That's negligence. We have trained sports medics at all of our football games.

I agree with that. Any game of anything organized by any school (including sports where injury is much less common, like European football) MUST have a doctor present, or at least a nurse, in case there is any need for first aid. It's unbelievable that there was none, and I fully support the family receiving compensation over the poor guy's death. :)

jeps Aug 31, 2008, 07:45 PM The school let that kid go lie on the bench. There were no medical professionals there to make sure he was alright, nor did they attempt to get any help. That's negligence. We have trained sports medics at all of our football games.
ok, that is negligence, i agree. I have had very bad personal experiences with schools and lack of first aid trained staff on trips so THIS makes sense to me. however, suing, idk, a kid who tackled him, did not make sense to me. to work with children, i needed to be fully first-aid and CPR certified. i have no idea why medical staff weren't at a game, i completely agree with you on that.

CCRunner Aug 31, 2008, 09:51 PM I just got back from camping, which is a good thing. I was the one that got stuck with the job of rolling up the sleeping bags and deflating the air matresses. My sleeping bag took at least ten minutes before it would fit into the god dang bag. The other went a little better but not much. And then the air matress wouldn't deflate unless I kept my finger in the little hole thingy to push down the device that made it not deflate as I slept. While I was working on this, my brother was off playing gameboy and being generally annoying.

My life hit a very fan. for reasons a few will know about.
Mirc Sep 01, 2008, 07:37 AM I have pneumonia. :(
And the antibiotics the doctor prescribed to me are unbearably expensive. 10 pills, that will last for 5 days... 20 euro?? And that's not the only thing I have to take. And if after 5 days there's no improvement, I'll have to take 16 injections. S41t, I remember I had a pneumonia when I was 10 or so, and those were incredibly painful, especially the penicillin.
How the hell did I get the cold that evolved into this, in the middle of the summer, while I've done nothing to exhaust myself, and so on.... I have no idea. So let's see, I've been to Las Vegas... that's the last place on Earth where you can catch a cold... and then to Slovenia, where people were sunbathing on the grass... and now in Bucharest, where there have been around 36 degrees C the whole last week. :hmm: I don't get it.

Colds have nothing to do with temperature, they're a viral infection.
And pneumonia is generally not related to colds, it's usually a bacterial infection, which is why you're taking antibiotics for it.

Man, don't tell me, I know that. The last part wasn't serious. :) I know that perfectly well. Don't worry, I'm not that stupid. I was simply angry and annoyed. I should have put an ";)" in there to make it clear. And I've had quite a lot of experience with antibiotics when I was younger, so I know perfectly well how they work (in fact, I even predicted exactly what the doctor was going to prescribe me). You know, it was the way you say things like "how the hell did I fall and break my arm, I thought I didn't drink enough for that to happen", when you are completely sober - you know that's not why it happened, but you're angry so you just... feel like saying something like that.
Then again, I got this pneumonia 2 days after I got the virose (is that the English name for it? I don't think so, but I don't know how to call it, let's just call it a cold). I'm pretty sure it was at least helped, if not induced by the same little devils that gave me the cold.

Are you trying to say virus? Or the plural virii? :smug:
Mirc Sep 01, 2008, 09:08 AM Are you trying to say virus? Or the plural virii? :smug:
No, actually after looking in some dictionaries I got the right word: virosis (http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/virosis). I guess I could have just called it viral infection, as Zelig did, I just wanted to use this name because that's the more "official" name around here. :) The Romanian word is "viroza", so it could have been either "virose" or "virosis" in English, following the normal changes you have to apply to a word with Latin origin from English.
Another rant: now apparently while I'm taking those medications I'm not allowed to eat salty or sour foods (those are the flavors I love most) and I'm not allowed to eat or drink anything containing either chocolate or caffeine. Great. :( No coffee, tea, coke, chocolate cereals in the morning, no sour soup (which is traditional around here, and very good), no lemon juice, no salad (or salad that tastes like crap)... So great.
nonconformist Sep 01, 2008, 09:13 AM Colds have nothing to do with temperature, they're a viral infection.
Actually, recent study has shown that the immune system is negatively affected by low temperatures, which is a possible reason for the body developping pyrexia to cope with such infections.
Mirc Sep 01, 2008, 09:15 AM True, and also from what I've heard extensive exhaustion or sleep deprivation can help a lot too in bringing your immune system down. :)

Abaddon Sep 01, 2008, 07:30 PM Still a total mess. I have not spoke to either of my flatmates for over a week, I have not even seen them. As an extra cruel joke, I've just had to cancel the internet I ordered and installed since i doubt I am going to be living here for any longer that the contact requres (4 months left) but the internet would have locked me for a year.

Don't think I'm not sympathetic, but this is exactly like that scene from Anchorman. "I woke up in a Japanese family's rec room, and they would not stop screaming!" Seriously, that's insane. How much longer are you planning on sticking to this "random people's" housing plan?
