View Full Version : Explain The Internet!!!??
miked1991 Aug 30, 2008, 10:43 AM I don't get this wonder. It's a world project which means everyone should get the bonus.
When I've built it myself I've been given a few techs afterwards at random times, presumably because of this wonder, but I never specified which 2 civs I'd take my techs from... are these just randomly selected?
Now I'm playing a game and I'm not doing so well... pretty strong military but tech wise I'm last, maybe last but one (out of 11!)... the Internet's been built by another civ, but I havn't recieved any techs when surely the two that have their tech's shared are ahead of me with techs I've not got yet!
Joshua368 Aug 30, 2008, 10:46 AM It's a world project, which basically means its a world wonder that cannot be rushed by money/whip/great engineer. Unlike Manhatten Project is only benefits the civ that made it, as far as I know. If you build it, you can any technology shared by any two other civilizations. It's situational but can be very helpful in times.
Genv [FP] Aug 30, 2008, 10:51 AM Player A has all the techs in the game
Player B has all the techs in the game, plus future tech
Player C builds the internet.
Player C has now all the techs in the game, plus future tech
Spitefire Aug 30, 2008, 12:22 PM In my opinion a better representation of the internet would be to start by setting it up as a nation wonder with no rush option, then change the effect it has to (+1% per turn to trade route profit) and (10 turns after building +1% WW per turn) after 100 turns your trade values would be doubled and war anger would be 90% above normal.
Genv [FP] Aug 30, 2008, 12:33 PM Um, No
That would make it trash
Kiwi Tyrant Aug 30, 2008, 07:07 PM If setting up internet broadband in a country is a National Wonder, then that civ is a very sad, backward civ indeed......
When is the Internet2 going to be available to the general public?

Player C wouldn't get the future tech unless someone else had future tech other than player B.

Hey, you live in New Zealand - you know decent broadband would be a wonder.
/took Telecom two months to work out why our internet went off every evening
//i told them the very first night i called why
Genv [FP] Aug 31, 2008, 02:07 AM That's bad? Australians get passed over on basically anything related to games.
Release dates, Connections, the whole deal.
Kiwi Tyrant Aug 31, 2008, 02:43 AM Yes, I do dwell within N.Z's big smoke, and yes, it would be a wonder for us to have proper broadband.......we just have'nt started to build the damn wonder yet!
.....we just pump out another Fishing Boat instead! :aargh:
Genv [FP] Aug 31, 2008, 03:24 AM Why don't you just pop a golden age with a GP ? You can't have many GPs to fill up the pool yet.
Switch to slavery / Org Religion / US. Should help if you need structures in your country.
Try demanding tribute from George Bush. He's pretty weak ATM.
Jerrymander Aug 31, 2008, 08:08 AM You can't just dump anything on the internet. It's not a dump truck.

The only GP's our country has got are General Practitioners. And they're mainly from India or South Africa!
We are in Slavery / Politicised Religion / Eternal Sufferage.
Sent a morse code message to George Bush, who in turn demanded us to gift Peter Jackson, trade them Dairy Resources and allow nuclear ships into our ports. All he could offer was the World Map; all the money has dried up from rush buying units for war, and rampant maintainance!!!
.....I contacted the Chinese instead; they suggested we capitulate.
MrCynical Aug 31, 2008, 10:07 AM Player C wouldn't get the future tech unless someone else had future tech other than player B.
Player C wouldn't get the future tech, period. The Internet doesn't give future techs even if multiple civs have them.

It is sad to say if RL were like CIV, America would be in trouble. America has no money, running defecit research, the production has gone over seas, resources and goods are imported when they can be found/made here, and the people oppose everything.
Mike Feury Aug 31, 2008, 06:20 PM I never specified which 2 civs I'd take my techs from... are these just randomly selected?
Yep, it's a gamble.
digitCruncher Aug 31, 2008, 06:42 PM No, its not a gamble -.-
If ANY 2 civs have the tech (not including Future Tech), and you control the Internet, then you get the tech.
A more complex solution that covers all questions.
4 civs (A, B, C, and D)
5 techs (1, 2, 3, 4 and 5)
You are A, and you have no techs, but you have the internet
Tech 4 is FUTURE TECH
B = 1, 2, 4
C = 2, 3, 5
D = 1, 3, 4
You get both Tech 1, Tech 2, AND Tech 3 all at once, the turn you finish the internet.
You get Tech 1 from B and D, Tech 2 from B and C, and Tech 3 from C and D.
You don't get tech 4 (as it is future tech). You don't get tech 5 (as only one civ has it)
Vorret Sep 01, 2008, 12:07 PM lol... how about an internet beeline ? :)
digitCruncher Sep 01, 2008, 01:54 PM I did that... it saved my butt, I grabbed 4 or 5 techs from the tech-deficit of the century, and managed to achieve space race victory from 4th place :D
Best game ever ;)

Well damn, obviously I formed a wrong conclusion--or the behavior changed since CIVanilla. Thanks for the info, makes Internet a lot more viable for close late games.
Supr49er Sep 02, 2008, 10:42 AM Even if you hold the tech lead, it's good to build The Internet just to keep it away from enemy hands. :D
TheDS Sep 02, 2008, 10:54 AM That is the way the Internet has always worked.
It's okay to read the Civopedia, you know. It's pretty clearly written there.
Civlyzed Sep 10, 2008, 08:40 AM You can't just dump anything on the internet. It's not a dump truck.
I know, it's a series of tubes!!

I don't dispute the generalization, however , you had BTS in your hands before we did, and as far as I'm concerned Sid's games are the only ones that matter.
ruff_hi Sep 10, 2008, 12:14 PM lol... how about an internet beeline ? :)There are a couple of succession games with internet beelines (search for Al Gore). One landed them about 20 techs (or more).

anima36 Sep 12, 2008, 04:21 PM a while ago i saw a thread about a rush to the internet, he suffered a lot for it but when he built he received about 30 new techs all at once and jumped into the tech lead.
ICNP Sep 12, 2008, 05:02 PM I've never built the Internet. It would be cool if it was tweaked. I mean is it that difficult to keep nuclear technology hidden to other countries because 2 others have it? Seriously that happened before the Internet.
^alon^ Sep 14, 2008, 12:34 PM it means excatly what it says in civiliepdia....
u get any 2 tech that at least 2 players have....

Economies in RL are absolutely nothing like they are in civ. I mean, if Rl was civ, pretty much everyone in China would die come new year, and I would think New York, LA, and countless other enourmas global cities would lose a lot of population as well.

In 1945 America could have vassalized half the world, if RL was like BtS, and kept the other half in fearful servitude, but America remembers every day what it was like to be a colony (there are a couple of documents about it, esp. The Declaration of Independence), so it chose to spend it's energy ensuring Liberty for all. Yea, we're currently having fiscal problems, and jobs are being outsourced, and we're arguing about a lot of things, but I'd like to ask why there are so many people trying to sneak into America, and I'd like to ask an Iraqi how they like their freedom, and I'd like to ask...you get the point.
