The Forum Games Catalogue
Now twice as long and four times as pointless!

Welcome to Forum Games!

If you've ever wished upon a star for a place where you can enjoy a pleasant atmosphere, converse with interesting people, and bet 350 gold on a pirate to kick the stuffing out of a wizard, then your wish has come true. Oh, and of course there are also some games going on. In this thread, you will find links to all games that are running, plus status updates and a little information about the games, too.

Are you new to this forum? Thinking of joining in with a few things, having some fun? If so, then a double helping of welcome to you. The users of this forum pride themselves on courtesy and helpfulness. You won't be singled out for being new - and if you have any questions about the games, the GM (that's Game Moderator, or Master - the person running the game) will be happy to answer them.

Have fun! :D

Mafia Games

The Mafia Games are probably CFC's most veteran forum games, having run since the early days of the site. A town of innocents will be infiltrated by mafiosi bent on killing them all - but the innocents aren't going to lay down and let them do that. Sometimes mafiosi will leave a clue at the scene of each murder, which the innocent players have to solve; other times, the townspeople are relying on the special skills (or 'roles') of some of their number to flush out the nasty peeps. These games involve critical assessment of claims and vote-patterns, and skill at clue-solving, and for the mafia members, adeptness at hiding amongst the innocents and making your clues hard to solve.

For more information on playing (and GMing) mafia games, or to register your interest in GMing a future game, why not visit the Mafia Information Thread (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=360189), run by Zack?

Mafia Games are easy to pick up and don't require an enormous time commitment, so even if forum games generally don't interest you, you might want to consider giving these a try.

Night of the Werewolves

Night of the Werewolves (or 'NotW') is a more in-depth variant of the mafia game with a fantasy setting - but this time, you don't get any clues! There's a lot more I could say about these, but forum user Ekolite has helpfully put together a guide to all things NotW (with rules by Unser Giftzwerg), along with the Fall from Heaven world in which it is based. This thread is now run by Backwards Logic and holds information on Mini-NotWs, too. You can find it here (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=323633). You don't have to read this thread to be able to participate in a NotW game, because a lot of it is quite similar to the mafia game and players will answer your questions if you have any, but it is still a good read (and it also contains an archive and some player AIM addresses, for private negotiations :mischief:).

For a full list of past NotWs, see the NotW Information Thread.

NotW XXXIX: Impending Retribution (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=410003) (GMed by Backwards Logic)

And if you don't have time for the larger games, or you got killed on the first day by those awful wolves, then you might want to consider signing up for a mini-NotW, which is like NotW, but mini. If you're playing a main NotW and you're still alive, then signing up for one of these is not recommended!

Combat Games

These are also known as 'Snakes and Foxes-style games' after the first game of this type, which has unfortunately been deleted. Like NotW, the Combat Games are basically an extension of the general concept of mafia games - there are some bad guys hidden amongst some innocents, and it's the bad guys' job to stay hidden while the innocents try to root them out.

What makes these so different, and at the same time so complex and engaging, is the introduction of half-daily player-vs.-player combat. Instead of voting for one player to be executed, you vote for two to fight. A set of stats unique to each player will determine the victor... the loser is removed from the game, his innocence, or lack of it, made public. Add in numerous secondary mechanics, such as team strategy, currency and purchasable items, betting on the outcome of fights, and other shady groups working on their own agenda, and you'll realise what makes these games some of the most popular on the forum.

Roll to Dodge

A comparatively new addition to CFC's recurring game roster, Roll to Dodge is a magnificently over-the-top exercise in creative insanity. The basic idea is straightforward: you are one of several players dropped into some setting, and your aim is to be the last one standing. What gives RtD its unique atmosphere is the luck-based command system: you tell the GM that you want to do something, anything, and the GM will roll a die to see how successful your command was.

I must stress this again: your choices are (almost) limitless, but the more extravagant your action, the more catastrophic the backfire will be if you fail. For example, you can summon a mutant giraffe to do your bidding, hooray! But what if you roll a 1? Maybe you just grow a really useless long neck instead. And what if you roll a 6? Perhaps the giraffe appears, but its neck is so long that it busts up the roof, showering every player with debris. You never really know what's going to happen and nothing's set in stone. Good luck: you'll need it.

Empire Building Games

If you came here from the Civilization forums, then you will undoubtedly be interested in building your own personal empire - and here at Forum Games, you can do just that! There are quite a few options available to you; for example:

Lazy NES

These are forum-based map games that are designed to be engaging and fun, while at the same time less strenuous and time-consuming than a regular NES (Never-Ending Story, a combination of map game and story-writing exercise that can be played in their own subforum, here (http://forums.civfanatics.com/forumdisplay.php?f=69)).

Don't be fooled by the name, though - you'll have to have your wits about you to build a nation that can stand the test of time! You'll be expected to send in 'orders' to the GM via Private Message detailing your country's actions for the turn, and the GM will craft an update out of all the orders he receives. There's a lot of variation in the rules from game to game, so make sure to read the thread carefully to get the best experience out of it.

Imperium Offtopicum

Imperium Offtopicum is an empire-building game that spawned from the Altered Maps threads. It has had many variations, but some rules remain constant: You expand a little at a time, you can engage in war and conquer the world, and the overall goal is fun. So, look into playing one!

IOT is not necessarily a huge time commitment, requiring maybe ten minutes of your day to put orders together - but of course, if you want to delve into the complexities of diplomacy, you might end up losing a bit more time than that! These games are some of the fastest-developing on CFC at the moment, so they're worth trying. (Thanks to civplayah and taillesskangaru for help with this intro)

Diplomacy

If you're a hardcore strategy-buff, then these are the games for you. Diplomacy games are based on the board game of the same name, and while some rules are modified depending on the GM, CFC's Diplomacy stays true to the atmosphere of the original game - backstabbing, paranoia and secret deals are all integral parts of the experience. And if you're not the one dishing them out, then you'll be the one on the receiving end. Mercy? These guys don't even know the meaning of the word.

As in a Lazy NES, you control your faction by sending orders to the GM using CFC's PM system.

This is a different concept in that it does not involve a map and the combat is simplified, but the idea is the same - namely that you have to use diplomacy and tact to achieve your aim, which in this case is to be the last nation standing.

Eat Poop You Cat

CFCer Terrance888 described EPYC thusly: "It is like a game of telephone but you [the GM] wire tap us and we alternate words with pictures." This is an apt description of Eat Poop You Cat, pronounced i'pupiukat, a game beloved of surrealists and hewn from the same cloth as Exquisite Corpse and similar games.

As an EPYC player, you will be placed randomly in a list containing other players. The GM will then make up a caption and PM it to the first person on the list, who must draw a picture to illustrate that caption. This player will then PM his picture to (the GM and) the next person on the list, who must make up a caption to accompany the picture. As the poop moves down the list, the original caption gets distorted into something entirely new (and usually quite strange). It's a lot of fun, not a huge timesink and no drawing skill is required, so if you feel like getting your mind blown, why not join a game and see what happens?

It hasn't seen an update since the beginning of July. I'd call that dead, wouldn't you? :p If thomas posts a status update and confirms that he still plans to update, I'll add it to the list; otherwise, it seems counter-intuitive to clutter it up with dead stuff.

As for the colour-coded text... you shouldn't really need a key. There are only three colours, and the status of each game is spelled out in text. The colours are only there for lazy people scrolling through the first post. And because colours are pretty.

In the last NoTW's there have been bettween 30 and 40 signups which could be said to be a lot of interested people. There is a quee for that since there is only normally running one at a time.

As for other "normal" mafia games there are always running some alongside and there isn't really any quee that I know of.

Ah ok; this forum looks pretty busy, and as soon as Taillesskangaru posts his game, I will even do him the courtesy of asking players to sign up to his game first and post a link in my OP, since it is his turn. If there are no objections, maybe I can host a little one to get things rolling, and I can get more familiar with all of you and vice-versa.

I can host your basic mafia games no problem... I have been around the block a few times and I also like to host theme games or games with different (but balanced) set-ups. I hope to see a lot of you there. :goodjob:

Some of the links to less recent NotWs have been deleted. Archiving them is the NotW Information Thread's job and I don't want to step on BL's toes.

Bumped this thread since I feel it is more appropriate here.

Those Darn States, a large Mafia Game (50 roles available, I don't forsee there being a need for more and am just hoping all of these could be filled, but in any case I'd include everyone interested), will be taking signups shortly. The game will take place at the very least after the conclusion of Camikaze's in progress and excellent Lord of the Rings Mafia, and if anyone else has requests or concerns for games this may interefere with, I'd postpone further. But right now I would guess early March for a reasonable timeline.

As mentioned in the NOTW thread (though this isn't NOTW but a large Mafia game) it's a History/WWII themed game with a light-hearted mood. The game will feature different factions, abilities, items, and many sources of excitement - some more details and rules will be posted in the sign up thread, the rest, of course, will have to wait until game time.

If anybody is already sure they are uninterested/unavailable to play, yet curious about the game and willing to keep things confidential, contact me and I'll see what I can share in a couple of days. Given this is my first game hosting a little input couldn't hurt (thankful to those who've established straightforward rules/precendents in that respect) - but don't take this as the game being incomplete or unpolished, I'd just be willing to share thoughts with someone who can't play but is interested and doesn't want to wait a month for things to unfold.

I have an idea for a semi-big mafia game. It's still just an idea and I need to get it launched at a time when I really can focus on GM-ing. (Not now.) I'll get back when it's fully developed.

In short it's a game where everyone's kids playing on a playground, the mafias are bullies and there will be different cycles. I will assign roles to everyone. I plan to get around 25-30 players. But should be able to do some more. And less, but that would make me sad :( .

I have an idea for a semi-big mafia game.

I have started designing a mafia game too for approximatly the same number of people (balanced for 24 roles) with the Simpsons show as background (I hope it hasn't been done already)... I will prolly ask for someone help when I am nearly done to check or reword my write ups, and to give feed backs on the game mechanics...

I hope my game can be used to fill in the gaps between two big games as a mini NOTW game does. Anyway, will make sure both games aren't started at the same time :)

Earthling
Feb 22, 2010, 09:56 PM
That sounds interesting; I certainly don't want to be pushy but I should be clear:

My game will certainly be a large and long-running game, and of course at the minimum I'd be waiting the 1-closer-to-2 weeks for current games (specifically LOTR) to wrap up.

However, I do have things close to ready to go, (to repeat since this is a recent bump to the thread - 50 players Mafia game centered around WWII/history but that's a bare bones description still, expect fun surprises) and I'd also like to give warning that the game would likely require a large amount of sign-up time (week or so). I of course am willing to meet the needs of the community, and the game size isn't 100% set in stone as I feel there is quite some versatility/flexibility where I could shrink player count if needed. But a long sign-up period is necessary anyway to get a large number of players, and be clear on setup/procedures.

So perhaps by this upcoming weekend if anyone else ahead of me in line has an idea - if they want me to continue to defer, or I could start signups next week; either is fine by me. I'm sure you guys are creating absolutely great stories and characters and so forth and will be looking forward to them. Thanks.

Earthling
Feb 26, 2010, 03:19 PM
One more :bump:

Just so everyone is aware, I'd like to ask the other game-developers what their current plans are regarding hosting of their various games. In particular, as my game is also a large Mafia game, I'd like to ask choxorn and Zack - or any others who have a large game in development but I don't see any - what their status is, if/when they'd be ready to go.

For my part, I would be ready to open signups this weekend. I'd intend to have a week+ of signup time anyway both to get information about the game out, questions answered, and fill slots and make adjustments as needed. Which would put the start date, after the conclusion of other games like Camikaze's of course, in early-ish March. As I've said before, I can postpone, but if no other games are going to be starting up by that time, I could set mine in motion now.

Thanks all, I look forward to the other games too and hopefully my own successful attempt at creating a good game.

Hey, add to the mafia games that sign-ups for Pick Your Poison and Those Darn States are open.

Also, a suggestion: Should we split the Mafia Game section in to Small Games and Large Games? One of both of these games is running these days. And they're pretty different: Small Games Have <20 people and no role PM's, although some have abilities and clues, and Large Games have a bunch of people and they do have role PM's, abilities, little if any clues, and are basically NOTW's with some, subtle clues, without roleplaying, or at least not as much role playing, and have a different name.

Yeah, DrumStudents' MiniMafia has 10 as opposed to 12 in electrics' and 14 in CCRunners', but that's not much of a difference, they're really all small games.

For that matter, in days past when we were playing the older mafia games (before ATPG came along and we added roles into them), they could be anywhere between 10 people and around 30.

I thought this morning of trying a new game mafia game style whereby there are only lynchings and no night kills. The idea being to make it more intense and paranoid as innocents have to spend more time trying to discover who to trust (also reduces meta-gaming I think since mafia usually night kill the known good players). What do people think? Has it been done before?

choxorn
Mar 04, 2010, 08:15 PM
How do you win, by not lynching?

Someone on either the org or TWC did it, and it only works if we don't know there aren't actually any mafia. :p

Mar 04, 2010, 08:19 PM
What if the idea is to find 'the Mole' (or several moles, depending on how difficult you want to make it), and voting and lynches are compulsory, with abstentions not allowed? That could be an interesting concept.

Bad Player
Mar 04, 2010, 08:26 PM
Yeah I meant that each day someone has to be lynched like a normal mafia game. Just without night kills - the mafia have to be tricky and convince the innocents to help lynch other innocents.

Takhisis
Mar 04, 2010, 08:32 PM
But then you'd have to have a larger amount of mafias. Or maybe have two or three mafia factions, so that they'd have to outaneuver each other, as well as some 'cop' faction, perhaps?

I am thinking of calling it "The toothless mafia" and then I thought why not make it set in a old person's retirement home (toothless ;) )!? A retired mafia boss was playing scrabble with an innocent and the innocent cheated and ended up dead. The mafia boss got his mafia mates together and want to kill all of the innocents but the old people are all locked in their own rooms each night so none of the mafia's old tricks of night kills.

However, being old people, they keep dying of old age! Each night there is a 50% chance (maybe more maybe less if people think this is a good idea) that someone will die by chance (mafia or innocent).

I personally am not a fan of random chance.

Bad Player
Mar 10, 2010, 06:33 AM
Fair enough, I will probably remove the random night kills. I want a mechanism that makes it in the interest of innocents to try and lynch mafia rather than doing nothing each day (mafia night kills are this mechanism normally).

Camikaze
Mar 10, 2010, 06:35 AM
Just make it compulsory for someone to be lynched. Remove the ability of innocents to lynch nobody. Compulsory voting, no abstentions allowed, etc.

Bad Player
Mar 10, 2010, 06:47 AM
Yeah that's the default but I'd like a real reason why they should lynch someone if possible. I think it would be more fun and add flavour to the storyline.

Camikaze
Mar 10, 2010, 07:01 AM
Because otherwise the mafia will a much stronger voice and will be able to kill everyone through the lynches?

Maybe have a story line based on a political battle or something. The evil communazis have infiltrated the party room and want their candidate to be the last man standing. The other side have to stop them. One person is removed each round, and the aim is for the innocents to prevent the evil communazis from taking over the political branch. Or something.

Bad Player
Mar 10, 2010, 07:26 AM
How about the retirement village is set on the island of Sicily. The mafiosa, after a lifetime of hard work, have much wealth whereas innocents have little wealth. The first 5 people who vote to lynch (not spamming everyone's name at the start of each day!!!) someone (mafia or innocent) divide up the money for themselves.

There are no night phases, only day phases. After a lynch (or whatever method of killing someone...) the clock fast-forwards to the next day (ie pretend you went to bed and got up again). I think this is necessary since without night kills, the game would go at half the speed.

Money can be used to:
1) (Anonomously) pay off the retirement village staff to keep someone in their room that day (ie no vote that day)
2) Bribe other people
3) (Anonomously) buy expressos all round (ie the runner-up vote choice is also lynched)
4) Hire a private eye (tells you if target has a large, medium, or small amount of money left, takes 1 day).
5) Order Pizzas! (Order pizza for everyone anonomously (you can claim to everyone that it's yours) and if you are mafia, you can choose to poison the pizza. Anyone who eats good pizza gains +1 strength point, anyone who eats a poisoned batch of pizza dies. You can only eat 2 pizzas per day.) more info (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showpost.php?p=8986711&postcount=106)
6) Hire bodyguard. Pay to be protected against being lynched the following day. This is public. It does not protect against being poisoned.

Main Goal: Survival
Team Goal: Your team (mafia or innocent win)
Personal Goal: Each person has a personal goal in their role PM
Financial Goal: To have the most money at the end of the game

EDIT: Toying with the idea that everyone has a personal weakness - examples could be alcohol, chocolate, pepporoni pizza, lust, intimidated by something, etc... Money could be spent purchasing a temptation and presenting it to someone. If that happens to be their personal weakness then they have to vote for a nominated person. This is done anonomously via the GM (person A pays $100 for chocolates to be sent to person B by PMing the GM and notifying him of the required vote, person C. The GM notifies person B that they received chocolates and if that is person B's weakness then they have to vote for person C.) PROBABLY WON'T DO THIS IDEA UNLESS PPL ASK FOR IT.

It will be a Mini-mafia Game, to give me a test of how hosting a game is, incase I would like to host a big one in the future. I want to make some twists in it, including a concept from Roll to Dodge. (The Dice roll obviously. :))

I will plan out the player roles and start the signups on March 15th. :)

Ok, I started work, and actually planning out the game and making the roles only takes around 3 hours for a game this small. (I plan 16 people) Only thing left to do is balance things a bit more, and do a little testing and I think it is ready.

I have no intention of starting the game at the start of April, much to late.

I do realize though that there are plenty of mafia games going on at the same time, so I will make the thread in the next few days for sign up's and begin the game after Camikaze's NOTW finishes, if there are no problems with that.

The first 5 people who vote to lynch (not spamming everyone's name at the start of each day!!!)

The problem with this is it benefits people who are in certain time zones and can be on right around when the update starts, then just immediately come up with a random reason to vote.

Bad Player
Mar 11, 2010, 03:38 AM
Good point, how about the first 5 people to put their first vote onto the person who gets lynched? Would that nearly remove the time zone advantage do you think?

Encourages bandwagoning even worse than already. There's now incentive not to change one's vote against someone no matter what the in-game evidence says. So once a bandwagon forms, it's now virtually impossible to get those votes removed since now they're being compensated for it.

My theory on the whole forcing people to vote is if the innocents/townies don't vote, they're only helping the wolves/mafia blend in. THAT should be all the incentive the innocent group needs to vote. If they want to shoot themselves in the foot by not voting, pffft, not the mafia's problem.

Bad Player
Mar 11, 2010, 06:35 PM
OK good point and thanks for the feedback. Can you think of any way to divide up the money from someone's lynch (even innocents have a small amount of money to start with)? If I divide it up with EVERYONE who votes for the lynchee then as soon as someone looks like they will be lynched, then everyone will jump on the bandwagon to get some $$! (maybe if innocent then you pay a fine????)

Anyway, I would like to host the next mafia game, I'll wait for the mini-mafia game to be almost to the end before starting. Also, I'd like some narrators (will use dead ppl too). The style would be light-hearted and a little humorous (they are retired mafia killing because someone cheated in a scrabble game or something).

Mar 11, 2010, 06:39 PM
How many players? Is this mini-Mafia-ish or larger? I'm of course on ongoing signups for my game but we don't have enough players yet; that said I don't have a particular hurry but I don't if you need a big game/lots of players you'd get them any faster. Don't think running mine in parallel with any others hurts me as far as I'm concerned of course but just the heads up; we really have so many games getting out there now, a real blooming of spring spirit or something.

Seems a bit big for a small game, try 15-20.

And maybe just get rid of the whole money idea, there's no real way to make it work. Or you could do something like what TFA did in his NOTW.

Bad Player
Mar 12, 2010, 03:02 AM
Choxorn - the money idea gives the innocents an in-game incentive to lynch someone each turn (since there are no mafia night-kills). Otherwise I'd have to make it just "YOU MUST LYNCH EACH TURN OR THE GM WILL BE ANGRY!!!" which is less fun IMO.

The idea definitely came from TFA - I'll look more closely at his game design for ideas.

TLO - you get started I think I still need to finalise ideas gimme a couple of days and I might have a better idea of how to make it work...

SUGGESTIONS FROM PPL MORE THAN WELCOME (even if I don't use them).

Bad Player
Mar 12, 2010, 05:20 AM
OK here's a new strategic layer:

Order Pizzas!
Order pizza for everyone anonomously (you can claim to everyone that it's yours) and if you are mafia, you can choose to poison the pizza. Anyone who eats good pizza gains +1 strength point, anyone who eats a poisoned batch of pizza dies. You can only eat 2 pizzas per day.

The innocents might order pizza for everyone to grow stronger (but the mafia can eat it too) and thus fight the mafia, but the mafia might also order pizza to grow stronger OR to kill people who eat it (mafia will die if they eat poisoned pizza). Orders are put in the day before. Money from dead people is split evenly with everyone.

Strategically this gives innocents more information to go on as well as making some interesting strategies for the mafia (and to some degree innocents) to win.

Mafia win when their combined strength is greater than the innocents' combined strength. Innocents win when all mafia are dead.

Bad Player
Mar 13, 2010, 02:05 AM
Kill Fire - you can choose to eat the pizza or not depending on whom you trust (I'm thinking of making it not anonymous now). So if someone orders pizza for the next day you can then choose to eat it or not. If you eat it and the pizza is good (all the pizza is good or all the pizza is poisoned) then you get +1 strength. If you eat it and the pizza is poisoned then you die (or should you be injured?? - I still swing towards dying if it is not anonymous).

Can anyone see potential pitfalls with this mechanism? It's got some experimental features in this game that haven't been done before so it might be a case of see if they work when it comes to it...

I believe that a minor strength increase is not remotely worth the very real chance of death in this case. You should either scale down the penalty, or increase the reward.
My other option would be to make it injury (not able to vote etc) if poisoned.

If I made the reward e.g. +5 str would that favour the mafia too much? It probably would put a lot of pressure on the innocents to eat any pizza because if they don't, then the mafia would quickly gain more cumulative strength than the innocents.

If I make pizza delivery non-anonymous then if anyone dies from the pizza, you know the buyer is mafia. So maybe it's not overpowered??? The innocents should coordinate to have a few of their (supposed) members partake of each pizza so if anyone dies they can lynch the buyer but if it's good, they can grow stronger. Also the mafia would try and all eat the good pizza, so hopefully it would help show who is mafia. Thoughts??

You should askthepizzaguy ;)
What other things does this strength attribute do?

I'd like ATPG's feedback! At the moment, all I think strength will do is determine when the mafia are more powerful than the innocents.

---------------------------
Hire Bodyguard: Pay to gain protection from being lynched on the next day. This does not protect against poisoning.

Remember the mafia have more money than innocents, at least at the start of the game.

Hey, should IOT be getting its own section on account of the large number of threads now? :p

To be honest I was torn on whether to include IOT in the list at all. It has a lot of threads, but the only reason for this is that every time a new one is made, the players run it into the ground within a few weeks with their bickering and powergaming and Brooklyn rage. Plus, in its first few incarnations (from before I went on hiatus) it was pretty much entirely spam, and so would not belong on the list anyway.

The reason it gets a chance is because the players seem to be at least attempting to fix its faults, and also because Thorvald took it under his wing for a while and he's been successful in the past at managing unruly threads (see: DYOS). It's under 'Miscellaneous' because it's essentially the same as 'War at CivFanatics', and for some reason I put that under Misc. instead of Empire-Building way back when, possibly because, well, it's hardly Rise from Medieval Kingdoms.

'Snot like being in the Catalogue is going to affect its fortunes, anyway. No-one reads this thing.

If you start new threads then the statuses of your old ones will be changed to 'finished' which is a lot less shameful than 'dead'. :p

Old forum games get deleted. That's what happened to DYOS 1-9. We wanted to avoid it happening again.

(However I will ban two players before the game even begins, which will reduce the number of players available)

With all due respect, you should really rethink your strategy;)

It appears to me Dom, that you edited your own words into TK's post without saying what you were doing. That is not a very smart idea.

In any case, this game is incomplete and rules are still being written, but if you are interested, sign up HERE (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=382769) it will be like a Mini-IOT-NES combination. The maximum number of players is 10.

Sep 27, 2010, 07:24 AM
Okay, IOT guys, I need your help here:

Imperium Offtopicum has been given its own section. (Well, subsection of the 'Empire-Building Games' section, alongside Lazy-NES and Diplomacy, both of which have lain inactive for quite a while.) So it needs a short definition to explain the game and attempt to entice new players in, like all the other game types have.

But the problem is that I have never played in an IOT and don't really know what they're about - what's the tone, for example? Are they very serious and stick closely to actual history, like a NES, or are they more wacky and far-out, like War at Civfanatics? Also, how much behind-the-scenes diplomacy is there, and how much of a time commitment is it to play?

Depends on the particular edition, though it's typically somewhere between NES/lazyNES and War@CFC, leaning towards the latter.

Also, how much behind-the-scenes diplomacy is there

A fair bit.

and how much of a time commitment is it to play?

Again, depends on the game, how "committed" you are, and the people who are playing. At one point, it took half an hour to just read the posts in IOTIV from the previous day. Currently, Mini-IOT would take up less than five minutes a day all up, IOTII and IOTV around ten. Take out the diplomacy, and it only takes around a minute a day to send in your claims or orders.

Info about IOT.

Imperium Offtopicum is an empire-building game that spawned off of the Altered Maps threads. It has had many variations, but some rules remain constant: You expand a little at a time, you can engage in war and conquer the world, and the overall goal is fun! So, look into playing one!
