What is the determination here? I always get the event that there's a flood or something and there are two options - buildings or people destroyed. But I can never select people destroyed.

How can I set myself up to actually have the choice?

You never can. People only get destroyed if there are no buildings to be destroyed.

They aren't really options in the normal sense as there's never a choice. If you have some buildings, the only thing available will be buildings destroyed, and if you don't have any buildings the only thing available be population loss.

For me, one of the buildings it always destroys is my Monestary - after I have discovered Scientific Method and it can't be rebuilt.

I second that.
Also, nothing makes me kill off an AI faster than a spy waiting until hte turn after to sabotage my frontier monastary.

1 word: Worldbuilder. I refuse to lose a building I can't rebuild. It's too frustrating.

In a recent game I had a hurricane which took out my lighthouse just 6 turns before I was to finish the GLH. I rebuilt the lighthouse and finished the GLH just one turn ahead of my son in our hotseat game.

Ha, thats a close call!
I wish that I had someone to play regular games against. I don't like playing online because people disconnect all the time.
I would rather play the computer and have a long 12 hour game.
