View Full Version : Money bags in the sea ... CoZe Sep 05, 2008, 07:28 AM Behold the power of the portuguese ! http://img399.imageshack.us/img399/5992/civ4screenshot0000uu6.jpg Joshua368 Sep 05, 2008, 07:42 AM Heh, I've gotten coastal money bags before, it's neat. How are you doing this though... obviously feitoria and collosus (no intercontinental trade routes for astronomy), but then what? Unrestricted financial leader? Doesn't look like a golden age... By the way six gold per coast is the limit. :goodjob: Boodler Sep 05, 2008, 08:00 AM By the way six gold per coast is the limit. :goodjob: Would be nice to see an all-ocean (maybe coastal ? ;) ) dutch city with Moai and dyke in a golden age. Is it like 2+ food / 3 hammers / 5-6 commerce ? Would be a treat to the eyes. :) mboettcher Sep 05, 2008, 08:01 AM He's financial Collossus+2 base+Feitoria+Finanancial+GA= 6GPT w/o GA is still Money bag mboettcher Sep 05, 2008, 08:03 AM @Boodler With dutch the limit is 5gpt under a GA as they don't have access to feitoria However, this is still all possible under restricted leaders as Willem is FIn. THe dutch are designed to benefit greatly from the sea. (as are the Port and Carth) mboettcher Sep 05, 2008, 08:05 AM Another strong Sea combo is Carthage w/ Hannibal and using the ToA + GLH+Collossus. Can get some serious Trade route+coastal wealth there blitzkrieg1980 Sep 05, 2008, 08:15 AM I've been told that the ToA is really not worth the hammers as it only delivers +100% trade routes in the city it is built. It obsoletes pretty early and I doubt you'll ever get more than 5 or 6 commerce per turn out of it. But the Colossus and GLH are both awesome for financial civs/sea power civs (like those mentioned above) mboettcher Sep 05, 2008, 08:19 AM The ToA can be really valuable for a Philo civ as it provides A LOT of GPP. Both GP and GM. Plus that priest can be pretty valuable with the mids and the the +100% with GLH. THe wonder just has to be paired with good synergy wonders. Its definately not a stand alone wonder but a SUpport one. A very good build with marble per se blitzkrieg1980 Sep 05, 2008, 08:27 AM aha... I knew they didn't put it in the game for no reason ;). I skip this when setting up my SE (preferring to go for the Pyramids). Does the AI put an emphasis on the ToA, or would I be able to grab it after getting the 'mids? I also tend to skip researching Polytheism until I've got Writing and am working the scientists in my science city. Sometimes I'll even hold off on it until I'm ready to beeline CoL for caste system/REX mboettcher Sep 05, 2008, 08:36 AM Honestly its very luck dependant. I usually build ToA if I'm doing a WE early and have access to marble. I've gotten ToA, Oracle, Collossus (cause of oracle) and Mids all in the same city before but this required a city founded for marble and luck enough to have more than the usual trees, started with mining, and had two very strong city locations (one to pump a few workers). I wasn't industrious though if that sheds some hope on the situation. Oh and to answer your question the AI seems to put low priority on ToA consistantly so I got it on inbetween builds alone. CoZe Sep 05, 2008, 08:40 AM no GA here, I'm Huayna of the Portuguese :goodjob: unfortunately I had to trade for astronomy soon and lost the colossus bonus  but I'm still undisputed tech leader and people are throwing their macemen stacks against my infantry protected cities :) (a monarch game by the way) blitzkrieg1980 Sep 05, 2008, 08:48 AM Skipped Astronomy until Assembly Line? Wow, I usually utilize the 25% research bonus from Observatory from the time I get it (upon researching Liberalism)! I'll have like 3 science cities utilizing 4 or 5 scientists. That 25% gives like 30-40 more beakers per turn as soon as I get them all built. I'm surprised you didn't need those observatories, although I imagine your economy supplemented the missing bonus ;) eewallace Sep 05, 2008, 09:10 AM I've done that with Elizabeth, great lighthouse, colossus + an early golden age. It is about the best early moneymaking situation there is! CoZe Sep 05, 2008, 09:18 AM nopes, you misunderstand. I didn't skip astronomy till assembly line ! I played quite a while from there and now I have assembly line while some people are asking for divine right from me :) though I didn't build any observatories at all, astronomy was important because of trade routes. you see this is an islands map and I can't trade with anybody (except the ones with astronomy, who are mainly my competition) so getting astronomy gave me an opportunity to get lots of health + happiness bonuses to my empire which was much more useful than the observatories for me ... by the way, my capital has three shrines + wall street and I got the most influential religion (I got to optics first and spread it to religion starved civs) now I generate about 200 gold with 100% science and the game is becoming pointless :) maybe I should try this combo with immortal or something. blitzkrieg1980 Sep 05, 2008, 10:06 AM LOL! 200 gold at 100% science!!! What level are you playing at? That's amazing :goodjob: I can't do that on levels beyond Warlord. The highest I'll get with 100% science is aro 10 gold, but I am admittedly a mediocre player GooglyBoogly Sep 07, 2008, 06:42 AM re: 200gpt/turn. Corporations are your friend. (don't need astronomy to found mining inc either) TheDS Sep 07, 2008, 11:49 AM I got it up to about 300 gpt from having religious monopoly + religious economy. Corps helped out early, but they start depleting it pretty fast if you don't start assigning Merchants though. More details can be had by reading the second thread linked to in my sig. blitzkrieg1980 Sep 08, 2008, 08:22 AM Still, though, a monopoly on religions is something I can only obtain playing even lower than Warlord. I'm a steady noble player and I can grab Confusionism and Taoism (maybe even Islam) and sometimes Christianity, but never can I get all the religions even at Warlord. It makes sense to get 200-300 gpt @ 100% science if you have all the religions and all their shrines. CoZe Sep 08, 2008, 08:51 AM Ok here are some more screenshots ! Actually it seems I exagrated a bit cause I had science at %90 when I had 200g. Here I have 96g at %100 but it's GA. http://img139.imageshack.us/img139/7627/civ4screenshot0003so3.jpg But I didn't focus on spreading my secondary and thirtiary religions, so it can be pushed much more if I focused on spreading them and spreading my corporations. By the way I have three gems in my capital BFC, which was how I got three religions really. I had no stone but marble somewhere on my island. http://img504.imageshack.us/img504/1598/civ4screenshot0004dl9.jpg As you can see in the first screenshot the world dominant religion was hinduism. I spread it to my main trade partners wang kong and augustus ceasar (or was augustus taoist ? I'm not sure) what I did was to deliberately give confucianism and judaism to backward civs which I won't be trading much. So they would be natural targets for stronger civs. The map was an islands map, and since I got three of the religions, most civs were religion starved. I rushed to optics to get the +1 bonus and get the first say on tech trading and religion spreading, which was a critical point for this game, and no brainer I guess. Here is the tech situation when these screenshots were taken. http://img396.imageshack.us/img396/6996/civ4screenshot0002xo7.jpg I won this game by space race in 1970. I could have gone for domination when I had assembly line, but I hate modern warfare really. This game was a Monarch game by the way. blitzkrieg1980 Sep 08, 2008, 08:53 AM Amazing. I always think my game came more difficult than everyone else's! ;) I just can't seem to grab early religions on games higher than Noble. |
