View Full Version : In-game graphic textures lower than in the editor?
SimonL Sep 10, 2008, 02:35 PM I put all my graphic settings at MAXIMUM, or HIGHEST, or whatever it is...
But I noticed that when I zoom in on my city or any object really, I lose a lot of textures. Here is an example. If I zoom on my town hall it looks like this:

But then when I'm in the editor, THIS is what I designed.

It seems to me a lot of the texture has been lost in the first screenshot. It's kind of sad because much of the editor's textures are rather detailed with various shades and reflections that look cool.
Is this what you guys get also? Or should I check some settings on my video card? I got the latest drivers before I started the game.
Dale Sep 10, 2008, 03:11 PM I get it too. :(
SimonL Sep 10, 2008, 03:15 PM I get it too. :(
I'm not sure it's normal actually. Do you have an ATI card? Mine is ATI 2900 HD whatever whatever.
leonel Sep 10, 2008, 03:20 PM I get that too and I have an Nvidia 8800 GTX
SimonL Sep 10, 2008, 03:27 PM Found this...

Dale Sep 10, 2008, 04:28 PM Yeah I've got an nvidea 8800 too.
Genocidicbunny Sep 10, 2008, 04:55 PM Yeah it seems like EA/Maxis did that on purpose to increase performance.

It's retarded not to leave the option open for those with higher-end machines, who have paid a lot to have the advantage of awesome eye-candy. Especially in a game that I'm trying to love almost solely on the eye-candy factor!
Ball Lightning Sep 11, 2008, 07:23 AM Patch 1.03 (or whatever), must fix this.

I eagerly started looking for the patch when I read your comment. Don't give me hopes like that
Macha Sep 11, 2008, 01:53 PM I finds this but as I am playing on a laptop nvidia 5650 which gives warnings of the
This should not work on your system
I just assumed it was what I get for ignoring the "minimum specs".
Daftpanzer Sep 11, 2008, 05:28 PM Does anyone not get this problem?
And does anybody get smooth anti-aliasing? (I don't on any setting :( )
I have an nvidia 8400 GS. I don't have the latest drivers as I don't have fast internet - but I've read they don't make a difference.
SimonL Sep 11, 2008, 07:25 PM I think you're right, I think everyone has this "problem". I'm starting to doubt that it's a problem... They want to make sure the game works for everybody I guess, just like they made it simple for everybody too. I dunno. I wish I had a choice at least. I tried forcing my computer to display better aliasing through my graphic card's utility, but it didn't do much and introduced weird and distracting glitches.
I really hope they do something about that. I'm really looking forward for the first patch. I hope it comes out like.. now.
Lord_Iggy Sep 11, 2008, 09:11 PM Well, this may be an upside to my long wait to receive the game...
Daftpanzer Sep 12, 2008, 05:25 PM I don't suppose anyone has found a solution to this yet? It's really putting me off designing things right now. It can't be a hardware/driver issue, when I can see things do display properly in the editor. Just not in the sporepedia view or in-game.

SimonL Sep 12, 2008, 07:33 PM That vehicle is wicked!
But yeah, it's the same problem I have. Like I said, I'm really wondering if it's a "problem". The game limits itself... There has been discussion and complains about this issue on the EA forums. Hopefully something comes out of it. At least give me the opportunity to play with high graphics, if it kills the game, THEN I can lower the settings. Don't just expect me to be a total loser and not understand how to set my games' graphics properly. Seems EA underestimates its customers.
Bigfoot3814 Sep 12, 2008, 08:16 PM That vehicle is wicked!.
I agree! Very steampunky.
Daftpanzer Sep 12, 2008, 09:17 PM Yeah I just can't understand it, it must have been a last-minute oversight by someone. Sure, have low spec option, but allow those who happen to have higher-spec computers to see some more detail in game. Surely you want to show off your game engine and the player's creativity!
I spent 4 years with the same computer, but I think even that could handle better texture quality. I got a new computer this year, it came with a modern but lower-end video card (geforce 8400), still im sure it can handle much better texture quality than this. Its lighting and shadows that kill the frame rate for me if I put them both on maximum.
Also, thanks for the compliments on my vehicle! I was going for a steampunk look, as it didn't seem right going straight into hi tech stuff :) Here is the PNG you can put into your my creations / vehicles folder. I have a spore account as 'Daftpanzer' but have real trouble sharing things, especially when the game is trying to download like 300 creatures from all the people on this forum that I've added as buddies :)

Lord_Iggy Sep 12, 2008, 11:18 PM I've got the game! And yes, I have noticed this. At the graphics level I play at, some animals pupils don't appear.
Daftpanzer Sep 12, 2008, 11:59 PM @Lord Iggy, I've been sharing your pain, and I'm glad you've got the game you ordered now :) EDIT: especially as I read your post about the possibility of waiting another 10 days!!!
I just wish it lived up to the expectations... Still I can't think of any game that comes close to allowing you the same amount of creativity.
Graphically, the cell and creature phases seemed nice for me (not too much anti-aliasing in creature stage though). It was only on the civ stage and afterwards that I really noticed a discrepancy between the graphics in the editor and in the game.
