Anyone else play 50 or so turns and then feel you did something wrong or got shafted in where you settled and then simply try again? I did that about 20 times today. I'm having a blast, but I can't help feeling that the first game I played before I knew so much was my best one...

Yeah, it happens sometimes. Once I found a perfect spot to settle my first colony, but I sent my pioneer to explore some ruins next to the border and he was killed. I didn't feel like continuing having lost half of my early game production right at the very start!

Sometimes I'll restart if I can't rush a cheap scout near the start of the game because on marathon speed it would take some time to buy one, and I'm not going to let myself miss out on all that gold from the natives. With all that gold you can fuel an early expansion boom that is hard to win without.

I've restarted about 8 games and have not gone pass turn 150/300 yet because I always felt my game was going to hell anyway.

You had better feel confident, because if you aren't on pace, you will lose. It takes a few games to learn how far you need to be along at a certain stage.

Hey cephalo - are you working on a mapscript for this? I hate never seeing sugar.

Hey cephalo - are you working on a mapscript for this? I hate never seeing sugar. And why can't there be horses?

Ya, it should be done in a week. I've been working on a new climate model for a couple of months. Horses aren't in the XML, so it would have to be a mod rather than something the mapscript can do. Currently though, horses are cheap enough so that you can easily give every troop a horse, too cheap in my opinion.

I can't wait for your script.

Oops. I edited the horses part because I'm not sure how many were actually here in 1492...

But, they clearly multiplied like rabbits. I guess I need to remember to buy some finally...

I'd remind you about adding Coffee, but that would not work since none of the buildings and workers would be available anyway... oh well...

:woohoo: cephalo working on a mapscript so fast.
Can't wait either... Where whould we be without the modders?

And where is gold? Isn't that why Spain came (and stayed) in the first place?

And potatoes too (while we're at it!) :)

Isn't that why everyone came? ;) Gold is represented by treasures, so that should be okay.

At the moment, the different resources aren't exactly different as the supply/demand mechanic doesn't seem to have much influence. I never found myself thinking "Wow, coats are expensive at the moment, I better find a place with lots of fur to produce some". I usually just settle where there's space and take what I get, so I'm not sure if more different resources would actually be any different.

As for the restarting: yes, I restart a lot as well. Probably due to the fact that looking at your starting position is the most exciting part of the game at the moment.

And potatoes too (while we're at it!) :)

They'd just be another food item or alcohol precursor.

If you have a good start, save it.

questions:
1. What does iron do?
2. The sons of liberty dumped TEA into the sea... where's the tea?

2. The sons of liberty dumped TEA into the sea... where's the tea?

In China and then being sold to colonists.

Actually for a while in the 17th century potatoes were considered an item of rarity reserved for the rich. I'm not sure in which century they become common place in Europe (no later than the early 19th century for sure).

1. Lets you produce more ore, which you can convert to tools, for production of buildings, ships, or guns.

2. The goods parties are a bit inaccurate, as you throw away your own goods, while the Boston Tea Party was in fact the Colonists throwing out English imports.

Has anyone tried selling raw ore? The price is crazy!

There wasn't really any gold mines in the new world in the time frame IIRC.

what's the hotkey to quick restart/map regen?
I checked the tips in the pedia and didn't see anything.

Yea i agree. They need a quick restart.

4 out of 5 games i would have to restart within 3 turns because either i don't find any land or just tiny 2 square islands, land with only mountains or hills which are terrible for food and crops or having native villages crammed into every free space leaving all suitable colony sites occupied.

I haven't gotten past 1600 yet because everytime i run into a situation where i think "Wish i knew that before" in terms of game rules/mechanics. And want to start over.
