I can't figure out how to save the game my friend and I are playing. Is it possible?

Nope, not possible.

you can save just press start and there. unless you on a match of course.

He said he and his friend were playing a match, and this is the multiplayer section of the forum, so obviously he meant can you save multiplayer games, in which case the answer is no.
