View Full Version : How do you install these new units?

How exactly do you install and get these new units to work? I do have DyP mod installed, but want to add these others. I got the creating a new folder in the units folder named for the specific unit. I go to add the unit in the editor and am not sure what to do. I click on add, checked the icons and see no icon for the unit I am trying to add. I went to a blank one and did an add but it just gave me a settler icon. I tried this with the vietcong unit. Can someone please lay it out step by step? I am not completely dense on this. Is there a limit to the number of units you can have? Thanks for any help.

I looked at the install instructions in the sticky above, but cannot add it or others. The GIF file stays in the folder where it was unzipped under units. When I add in the editor and name it, nothing shows up, no stats or icon.

first of all get the updated units_32.pcx, the add your file and make sure the folder and ini have the same name. goto edit and add unit. find the icon, make sure you type PRTO_******* in the spot where it looks for the file. add stats and so on then save as ******.bic

Conner, you are a very, very naughty person (this Forum is supposed to be for COMPLETED units only. :spank: )

Anyway, what recon1591 said is right. But if you are still having problems, then have a read of this....
(in here there's a section about the units_32 file) :)

Sorry for posting here, thought it would be the right place. I followed the instructions and put image supplied in the zip file in the units file, but still cannot see any of them in the unit icons and the stats are not showing up. I'm not completely dumb, but this is frustrating. :(

Ill start from the beginning, And wont leave anything out. First off, you have to use the editor. If you have the pc version, Simply look in> all programs>infogrames interactive>Civ iii>Civ iii edit> and open civ iii edit. Look for the change rules option, I think its in scn. prop.'s then go to the unit tab. then click add unit, wave away the precaution message and type in the exact name of the unit you downloaded. Make sure its right, case's and all. Then you should be able to add what stats you want. Note: from my experiences, the civolipedia entry and pcx are not necessary. in fact I use some units with a blank pcx. btw The pcx is the 'small version' of the unit, that appears next to the name in the city display. If you have the Mac version, im afraid your screwed. Also make sure the file is unzipped in the Civ iii\art\units file. If you still have trouble, tell us the unit your downloading. Some units sound files are messed up. It seems I cant say this enough. If the sfx are messed up, It will crash the game. Anyway goodluck. :goodjob:

I followed all the instructions and tried with three different units: vietcong, grenadier, and jump carrier. Exactly what I did is this:
1. created a folder with the exact name of the .ini file
2. unzipped the file in the folder
3. I put the JumpCarrier_units_32.pcx file directly in the main units folder
4. I went to the editor to the units tab
5. I clicked add unit and typed in Jump Carrier
6. In the civpedia entry I typed PRTO_Jump
When I go to scroll through the icons, nothing is there other than the ones that are there with the DyP from Kal-el.
I can add the units, but all I get when placing on a map is a settler unit named Jump Carrier or whatever was added. What am I doing wrong?

Also, how do you save what is placed, because these are gone when I go back into the editor? I have downloaded all these extra units to add, but none seem to work. Thanks. I know these can be annoying questions, but thanks.

like i said you have to update your units32.pcx. . the main one not just the unit icon. and your unit icon ( large and small ) goes in your arts/pedia/units folder.

Ok, I know this will sound stupid, but how? I tried copying and pasting the units_32.pcx for the new units into the main one, but that does not work. I really do appreciate your patience. Thanks.

k well you need a good program that can edit .pcx files the main ones that you can get free is paint shop pro (internet) or Microsoft photo editor (i think it supposed to come with the best windows office the $199 or whatever thing but i got it with my word cd, after i found the file)

and then if you use photo editor make sure you either open unit_32.pcx twice so you can paste the first row again or paste the image when you are inside the first unused frame (has a weird paste)

if using psp then just click paste as a new section and put it inside the first unused frame (normal paste technique but different way to do it)

then if you have regular paint like most of us had when we got our first windows 95/98/me/xp or whatever then that can not be used because it can not modifiy a .pcx and save it again as a .pcx file

Thanks Incubus, that fixed it. I figured it was something like that. Thanks, I really appreciate that.

One other thing, after I closed the editor and opened it again, the unit was not saved, the icon is still there and I can add it again, but how do I fix it so that it stays there?

I am using new units along with DyP and pasted the new unit into the units_32 that comes with DyP. Thanks.

Well this is not what I do. I have no experience with the pcx, And I am currently testing my Iroquoian cavalry equivalent. And it works fine without a pcx. I haven’t got around to making a pcx. In fact I don’t intend to. Im sure you don’t need a pcx. But since you want one you might want to check out DyP's readme. You have all the necessary units for DyP right? If you just want add your own check out

btw, Incubus0223, do you play EE?

Great, this is what I was looking for. Thanks for posting it. Now comes the task of assigning values to everything and getting the folders added and sorted. An update has been posted, too. Thanks for everyone's help and patience.

Hey PCHighway yea i play EE as in empire earth but not like on the internet or anything of that matter Me neither Incubus, I was just curious, EE was the only place I saw a Flack Halftrack in a game. I was wondering how you got the idea. I tried making a B-29 with that idea in my mind. . . but Failed, horribly.

3rd green beret / 1st spec. ops team. That puts my cousin to shame but- and only the elite use this slogan. Yeah, he joined with the vision of becoming a Marine Recon  He’s been in about two years and hasn’t left the U.S. I still question his sanity ;)

I am moving and so won't have much chance to play Civ3 for a while, so if someone would please answer this question.

I downloaded the big zulu file and was starting to make folder and put the file info in them. I have not completed it all yet. When I did a practice game and went to the build options, the icons were all screwed up. Is that normal and be fixed after I set up everything in the .bic? Thanks.

with the new units32 you might have to recheck the alinments just to be safe. if not just scroll to the right icon and when your done just resave the bic. . you should not have had any problems with the originals. you have to asign the icons to the new units.

to pc.
thats the diff. between the marines and the rest of the forces. in the marines they don't teach you to think for yourself. and it takes a dumass with no brains and guts out the ass to be a elite.

Yes, its normal. You have to go in the editor. But I would make sure you have all Dyp's files, in the right folders, before anymore 'testing'.
