Not too much to add here, except this would be a pretty novel idea. I doubt this could be modded well and I doubt the company would like to spend time doing this.

could be done fairly easy i guess.
The barbarian mod (warlords i think) does it reather well.

You have XXXX gold to spend on units (regular, dragoon, artillery, mow)

Start out on the europe screen with your units on the dock.
Load your units into the MOWs you have at your disposal and send them off.

At the New World screen you have the same map the nation that declared independance HAD (before the declation) and your goal is simple. Take every colony in the name of the King (you... yay!) and hold them for XX turns afterwards.

Game could either be a predefined scenario (less loading time)
Or you run through the game with accelerated gameplay (AI plays against itself for ~150 turns (or so)

Basicly "barbarian mod" for colonization :)

I was thinking more along the lines of watching the colonies grow, dealing with taxation, etc etc and then sending your REF upon revolution.

gets pretty boring then dont you think? Watching 200+ turns of the AI playing until he finally declares seems a bit dull (atleast for me)

Landing in continental USA with 10 man of wars filled with troops and march to boston trying not to die against those pesky rebels and their ambushes, now theres fun :)

true but then they maybe you could bring back the old mercenaries thing and try to fund wars with other colonies. I dunno, youre right though a significant number of other options would have to be added to make it as engaging as being a colonist.

I agree. I think that you should be able to play as the king because it will make it more exciting.

Nice idea. :) Hm... I would love to play the game normal; but when WoI started then there is a chance (maybe random?) for playing on the kings side or still plaing the rebells. (Well I dont "like" the random thing, but, I dont see another way to prevent players from using exploits.)
