Hey all,

Just decided (finally) to upgrade from vanilla to BTS, and am having a lot of problems installing BTS. I have the Gamestop digital download C4-first version 1.61., but have somehow managed to update it to 1.74. Like many people, I am having the BTS installer crash after reporting, "'the latest patch of CIV 4 is available, going to install it now". This continued even after updating the game to 1.74.

From searching the boards, it seems that the digital and CD versions of the game don't recognize each other, and this is probably why my BTS installation is failing, right? So I have a couple of questions on what I should do:

1) I read in this thread (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=258572) that someone reported success with this kind of problem by updating the patch in the registry from 1.74.0000 to 1.74. Is this a good solution to my problem? And most importantly, if it is, how on earth do I update the registry? I have NEVER done this before, and am kind of terrified of messing up my computer by fiddling with the registry. If this is a good solution to my problem, could someone please give me step-by-step instructions for how to edit my registry properly? :crazyeye:

2) Am I completely messed up here, trying to install the CD BTS I just bought with a digital download version? (in other words, do I have to cough up the money to re-buy a game I already have?) If I would be better off with the CD version, where could I get a copy of C4 vanilla cheaply? (I'm just a poor college student :()

3) Is there something else I should do?

This is so frustrating, because I was looking forward to playing along with BTS succession games-Argh!

Thanks a lot!

To edit the registry, go to the "Run..." command in the start menu and type in regedit.

However, if you are at all nervous about messing with it, or have never done it before like you said; DON'T do it.

If you do decide to buy another copy of Vanilla Civ, Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/Sid-Meiers-Civilization-IV-Pc/dp/B000BC38K6/ref=pd_bbs_sr_2?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1223395153&sr=8-2) has it for only $24 right now. Alternatively, Gamestop is selling BTS downloadable version (http://www.gamestop.com/Catalog/ProductDetails.aspx?product_id=65347) for $20.

I am not sure about all the compatibility issues mixing downloadable versions with CD versions. I am using a CD version of Vanilla with a Steam version of BTS and I have not had any issues. But I have seen lots of people with problems the other way (digital Vanilla with CD expansion packs)
