Recently I had a computer virus and had to run a restore program. This helped to get rid of the virus, but in the same it forced me to re-install most of my programs. I managed to re-install CivIV vanila fine, except that I can't install the 1.74 patch, however I can still play it. My real problem is I cannot install BTS. I get part of the way inot the instalation process, and it say the install sheild fails, and then thats that.I'm wondering if anyone has experienced this before, or if this might be related to not being able to get the 1.74 patch to work. any help is really appreciated.

I don't know, Isent the error message to Firaxis, and I'm hopeing to get an answer soon. I'm wondering if thats the reason for not being able to install BTS, but I'll soon find out, thanks by the way

WOAH that's freakin weird, I have the EXACT same problem/scenario and came on today just to ask about it too. You must be my twin from China or something.

When I tried to install the patches through the game (in the advanced options section when you start the game) it simply said there was an error.

The error I get when I manually tried to install the patch (1.74) is as follows:

"The setup has detected that version 1.09.000 of Sid Meier's Civilization 4 is already installed.

The setup is not compatible with this version.

You will have to uninstall the previous version before installing this version"

Weird considering I haven't yet played a single game since installing it, or even installed any patches. Regardless, how do I go about uninstalling this version or whatever?

You are trying the in-game updater? Did either of you try downloading the patch manually yet?

For all three of you - try downloading and installing 1.61 patch first. Then apply the 1.74 patch. There seem to be some issues going straight to 1.74.

I just installed CIV IV, but when i'm installing the patch 1.74, all I got is a message saying Civ IV is not installed. Although when i try to install BTS, I go through the installshield, then a few screens from BTS , but when i'm launching the real installation, i've got a window message error with nothing in it... i'm really stuck. Any help? I'll be browsing the forum. Although for the patch of Civ IV Vanilla, i'm trying to install it through the online game. Hope this will work. (in fact it's not)
PS: I installed it tons of time without any problems.

Go to google or wherever and type in "Civilization 4 patch 1.61". save the patch, unzip it and install. After installing it, go back to google and type in "Civilization 4 patch 1.74", save it, unzip, and install. After I did this I was able to install civilization 4 beyond the sword, but I had a similar problem with BTS too. You will have to find the patches on google just like you did on regular civ 4 for BTS and install them in order.

My civ version is a digital one, does it matter? I bought it recently on a website and it seems that it is already V1.61, although neither the V1.61 nor the V1.74 seems to find the installation.

My previous installations were from a CD version (I lend it a while ago)
I think I'll format my hard drive,see if it'll clean the mess.

the digital versions require their own patches - you should be able to get the 1.74 patch from the site where you got the game from :)
The ingame updater and the patches linked on this site will not work.
