Nothing yet.

Turn 233
I'm not going to be able to play the turn this evening. Tomorrow, probably, but not tonight.

I think we should offer Babe a city from Gong, and communicate that we have done that. Maybe offer T for Texas or Abbey Road, both inland and size 1. Not the only cities we have like that, but they are the first two that caught my eye. A bit to the north and away from the Old Gong Core Area.

Babe Status
I just opened Turn 232. Babe has no visible cities. They are just about dead and gone. Without a visible city we cannot build an embassy or plant a spy. If Babe is not gone by this Turn they will be gone by Turn 234, I'm sure.

However, that does not mean they are ignoring us. With the options so bleak, they may not have checked their email since they sent their last turn.

Turn 233
I finally have a big enough block of time to play this turn. I've downloaded the Turn 233 save from Saber; now to get Notepad up to date with Turn 232 data and then to play the turn.

I figure this will take from 3 to 4 hours. Even playing turns back to back takes me 2 hours (which includes the download, prepping the turn log, playing the turn, getting screen shots, uploading screen shots, sending the save to Babe and posting here).

Babe
Before I play this turn I will PM their last turnplayer to notify them of the current email. When the turn is nearly done I will check email and PMs again. Gifting to Babe will be the last action of the turn.

Before I began my pre-turn prep I PMed Whomp, the last Babe turn player. He replied before I got started on the turn; details are in the Babe thread.

Biggest item: Babe has a settler in The Council's land somewhere. I will try to find it.

I'm not sure how that changes things. But I think I will offer them a city, anyway, at least for this turn. That should prove to Babe that this is a serious offer.

General Notes and Plans
We have an unsolicited offer of Wines for Spices from Saber. I'm not sure that we need another luxury, since we have six connected right now. We only import Dyes from The Council.

We do not accept the Luxury deal from Saber.

I wonder how many luxuries Saber has access to? I am sure they picked up one or two from Babe.

We might want to consider this deal later. I will email Saber about our refusal.

The big map of The Council reveals 4 airfields and 3 airports but no Purple units and no Purple cities.

Learn or steal?

Change from Space Flight to Fission (UN). At 90% and 100% science, 5 turns.

Current: 0% science, +1252 per turn (no geeks), Fission in --
Try: 0% science, +1049 gpt (all geeks), Fission in 19.
Now the slider.
At 80%, Fission in 4, -70 gpt.
At 70%, Fission in 5, +83 gpt.
We have 3670 gold.
We learn at 80%. Sooner is better.

We can steal later.

We clean up one polluted tile W of Thrombriel; two more left. One is W of Teal domination (flatland) and the other is W-SW of Fortress of Meleet (mountain).

Not sure where our naming of Modern Armor left off; we have 55 MA but some are upgraded Tanks; name the new ones this with letters (Modern ArmorA). All three move to guard our SGL outside Freedom Central.

Lydia Sutherland and LS-005 join 4 other transports in Coastal Geeks. Teal Thunder, their escort, also arrives.

I consider sending a Cruiser or two towards The Council to update our maps (and find Babe), but decide against that. We won't really learn anything new and we'll see the new Babe city once it is planted.

New vCruisers Meleet's Manicure (Fortress of Meleet) and Teal Tribulations (Teal domination) sail towards Coastal Geeks.

Name our Battleships Harry Callahan, John McClane and Martin Riggs for no good reason, except to give them a name. I'm not sure what we are doing with them, so I spacebar them in place.

Attempt to plant a spy in Saber for 100 gold. Fails.

Decide to offer Woodstock (1) to Babe. It has lots of grass and a lake, but no luxuries or resources nearby. No units are in the city.

Before I decided to research Fission I did check the cost of stealing tech from The Council. It was around 3150 gold or so; I've forgotten the exact number.

General Notes and Plans
We accept Babe's World Map.

We accept Wines for Spices from Saber.

For some reason the turn starts in a Zoomed Out Mode.

Woodstock (1) on Gong is the new Babe capital. That could create a problem with culture flips.

New ModernArmors D and E protect our SGL.
Marine05 joints them.

Both new Cruisers, Ishme-Swishme and Azurra Azualt, sail towards Gong to offer some sea defense.

One polluted tile remains; the mountain W-SW of Fortress of Meleet.

We try again to place a spy in Saber and lose 100 gold in the failure.
We then waste 62 gold trying to place a spy in Babe.
We end with 3336 in gold.

We see Rails in The Council.

I think we need to beef up our military to try to keep pace with Saber. Once they start beating up on The Council, our relative power should increase. But until the bullets start to fly, we could be the target.

I thought we would need some libraries around the new Babe captial of Woodstock, but given how much greater our culture is than theirs, that may not be needed.

We haven't received the Turn yet, but I won't be able to play the turn Tuesday or Wednesday. Tuesday is Election Day and I am an Election Judge; I'll be busy from 6am to at least 9pm, if not later. Wednesday I don't have enough computer time to play the turn properly, so it will be Thursday before I could play the turn.

EDIT:
I spoke too soon. We just got the turn and a message from Saber.

Well, I'm still not able to play until Thursday.

General Notes and Plans
Another polluted tile NW of Sugar-Free Wheaties.

New Marines and Modern Armor guard of SGL.

Changed several cities in Gong from wealth to either worker or settler.

Not sure about abandoning Hermit since it is not a coastal city. Have I missed something?

We can rush some of these builds next turn. Can and will are two different things.

In Gilligan we have 5 Artillery, 3 Infantry (60, 61 and 67), 4 Marine (02. 05, 08 and 12) and 21 Modern Tank, for a total of 33 units.
We have a few other units across the continent.

We waste 100 gold on trying to spy on Saber.

I've included the Wonders in the screen shots.

Monte Cristo grew to size 2, but the new citizen is unhappy. It becomes a geek and the city will starve this IBT.

I still haven't got a answer on this. Do you think that SABER will wait for us or will they get too pressured and attack the COUNCIL?

CommandoBob
Nov 07, 2008, 08:16 AM
I think they are willing to attack The Council on their own.

Their first goal is to stop The Council's research and take the Space Race out of the game. To do that, they need to reduce The Council to ten cities or less. That will take more than one turn. I just counted and it looks like there are 25 cities on The Council's main land. No one has nukes, so that means conventional warfare with a lot of units.

Saber has to stop The Council's research rate and cripple their production capacity. The fastest way to do that is by war.

If Saber doesn't do that, then The Council will probably get a Space victory, unless we help Saber. But that means we won't get the UN victory, so we need to help Saber covertly, so that The Council is weakened enough to rely on us for help (sanctuary cities) and willing to let us win in order to prevent Saber from winning.

General Notes and Plans
Three polluted tiles at the moment; one is being cleaned up. One tile is NW of Sugar-Free Wheaties, the newest one is W of Freehand.

Dropping Science to 70% and we learn Fisson in 2 turns; leave it at 80% and -120 gpt.

We waste 100 gold trying to spy on Saber.

We investigate Babecolony for 57 of 2940 gold. No signs of Moblization, but this is an island.
We investigate The Aboretum for 235 of 2883 gold.
Screen shots are below.

Now at 2648 gold, -120 gpt.

Next turn (237) we can rush our worker/settler builds in Gong.

We have 3 workers planting a forest NW of Liberty Shore.

We spot a Dark Blue Destroyer and an Orange Destroyer but only the Dark Blue can be seen in the screen shots; the Orange got lost due to distance.

We can investigate two or three cities next turn if needed, to confirm/deny mobilization.

I expected something to say 'Hey, we're mobilized!', but I might be thinking of an advisor screen.

Also, I thought the worker build in BABEcolony was an indication that they were NOT mobilized, which is why I looked into a second city. I've never mobilized before and Kuningas did it for us in this game.

(I have signed up for the Civ4 MTDG, even though I lack Civ4. I don't need Civ4 to crank out bad prose or talk to other people. :D)

Do you think the COUNCIL is stopping their space ship production and going for defense?

Empiremaker
Nov 11, 2008, 01:10 PM
They are mobilized because they have an irrigated grass producing 2 shields and 2 gold. The only way to get 2 shields is to be in a Golden Age or be mobilized. If they were in a Golden Age, the tile would produce 3 gold (1 from the road, 1 from republic and 1 from the golden age), but since it produces only 2 gold they have to be in mobilization. Furthermore, their culture building are only producing 1/2 the culture (uni is giving 2), which is a side effect of mobilization.

CommandoBob

Council added 14 units this last turn, to bring their offensive total to 172 units (no workers/slaves, but including artillery and transports).

We have 202 offensive units; we added two units.

The Council is gearing up for war. Or, like we have talked about earlier, they are preparing for war but hoping to disband to build space ship parts.

Before they can get into space they need The Apollo Program. And they might have an SGL or MGL for that.

Empiremaker
Nov 11, 2008, 01:14 PM
But the Apollo Program can't be built during mobilization. If they had an SGL/MGL it should show up in their military screen.

If SABER has knoledge of the COUNCILS's military uprising. They will attack us. We might need to find a way to get the COUNCIL's UN vote and rush the UN before anything "bad happens".

Elephantium

I just had a devious thought.

Pull all of our military back from GONG-land.

Position our transports -- and build a few more if necessary -- so we can move all our arty and Marines, a dozen Mechs, and around 30 of our Modern Armor to SABER-land in a single turn.

When they invade GONGland, we invade their core. Their military will hurt us rather badly, but while they're taking over GONGland, we'll be burning their core.

Of course, this scenario would pretty much hand victory to the Council - there's no way we can win before they launch a spaceship if we're warring with SABER.

I hope you're wrong about SABER attacking us, remake.

I tried a few turns back and our spy was caught and killed. They are in Anarchy. Their choices are limited.

I'm not sure what military they could build. I think they are too advanced for a Warrior, but they should be able to build a Rifleman. I'm not sure about their trading ability; they could be getting Horses from Saber but I don't think so. Not if they were willing to declare war on us to give us War Happiness.

I would rather try to investigate Saber, but I hate losing 100 gold each turn when the attempt fails.

Don't try to plant a spy every turn. When a plant spy mission fails, a flag is triggered that makes any further plan spy missions fail. This flag has a 1/3 chance of disappearing each turn. So, it is best to plant a spy every 3rd turn.

Remember, The Council can't build the Apollo Program while they are mobilized. The only way to get out of mobilization is to make peace, but if BABE/The Council stay at "war", then The Council can't get out of mobilization, can't build the Apollo Program and can't win. If we built an early warning net of ships, we could get the first strike against SABER. I like the idea of repositioning our troops.

Every 3rd turn; I can do that.

Remember, The Council can't build the Apollo Program while they are mobilized. The only way to get out of mobilization is to make peace, but if BABE/The Council stay at "war", then The Council can't get out of mobilization, can't build the Apollo Program and can't win.

But if they have already built the Apollo Program (which would be nice to know), then: they could ask Babe for peace, Babe offers peace, the turn is sent to The Council, they accept peace and then disband units for space ship parts.

Unlikely with Saber making war noises, but possible.

If we built an early warning net of ships, we could get the first strike against SABER. I like the idea of repositioning our troops.

We've got plenty of ships in production. The trick is a one turn invasion. We would have to launch from an 11 Tile island, I think.

Empiremaker
Nov 12, 2008, 07:44 PM
But they don't have Space Flight, at least they didn't when we last stole from them, and they say they don't have it.

We can "ask" BABE stay at war with The Council.

Elephantium

I wish we had about 5 or 6 Jet Fighters in our core; Recon would be nice for patrolling our coastal waters.

Also, we need a coherent strategy for our next moves re: SABER and The Council. I favor declaring a fake war on The Council and moving a couple of ships into port so SABER can't see 'em. We ask the Council to do the same. Then, we stall, telling SABER that the Council sank some of our ships.

Of course, they might demand to see the battle log, so we'd need to work with the Council to concoct a plausible fake one.

I haven't opened the save, but it does appear that Saber declared war on The Council. That is no surprise to us, nor to The Council, really. We (us and The Council) knew war was coming, we just didn't know who was 'it'.

We willl finish learning about Fission this turn. Which means we can rush the United Nations with our SGL and we will. It will complete on Turn 238.

On Turn 237 we will declare war on The Council.

On Turn 238 will send peace to The Council. I think we should also offer a city of refuge.

On each of the following turns we will do the same thing.

This is mainly for propaganda purposes. We want Saber to see that we are at war with The Council and we want The Council to know that it is a Phony War. And an escape hatch, if they need it.

(Side note: One thing I don't like about in-game trading is that Accept/Decline on the trade occurs at the first of the turn. You don't have time to decide if you want to accept it or not.)

Judging by the battle log supplied to us by The Council, all they lost was ships. Saber has not landed yet. So no land combat. I don't remember seeing any shore bombardment.

We don't have ships in place to invade Babe. Sorry, but that's the way it is. All of our transports are in Coastal Geeks, on The Council's side of the world.

In the UN, I will write something that will indicate that we are joing Saber and ganging up on The Council. Saber has not posted anything about it. Nor did they post anything when took on Babe, either, so that is not too surprising. Me and General_W are the, um, verbose ones.

Since we cannot invade Babe, The Council is going to take a beating from Saber. This works in our favor. The more damage that Saber does to The Council, the more willing The Council will be to vote for us in the UN and avoid a Saber win.

The way to frame the issue is quite simple. No one is voting for FREE to win. They are voting for Saber to lose.

That's the broad outlines of the plan.

One detail is still unknown. In a solo game, once the UN is built, the game asks every so often (every 4 turns, I think) if you want to hold UN elections. And mabye on the turn that the UN is built.

In this kind of game (PBEM) how does it work? Can we ask to hold UN elections? Also, how would the voting be ordered? Across turns or all on one turn?

Before I play (sometime on Sunday), I will inform The Council of the high points of what we are doing. That is, declaring war this turn, offering peace and a city next turn.

I will also inform Saber (after the turn, with screenshots) that we have declared on The Council.

This looks like a make-or-break moment in the game. Any input or comments is helpful.

I wouldn't make peace until we are ready to attack SABER, as not to give our plan away. Remember, if the Council is eliminated, we can still win with BABE's vote.

General Notes and Plans
To-Do List

Confirm the war.
Stop Research, rush settler/worker builds in Gong.
Need Transports from Gong, too. May rush some transports in the smaller coastal cities.
Begin planting forests around GetOutOfJail-Free in the north.
Need to pillage the southern tip of Gong.
Investigate The Council's military; confirm losses.
Look for The Council's ships. May attack a few.
Need to discuss a FREE city 2N of The Ways (our location would be Azzura Coast). This tile is not currently worked by Chamsuri's Cove (13). It is on a hill and 2 tiles from two cities.
Will send 2 transports towards The Council (?)
Last thing to do is declare war on The Council.
Hold off on rushing the UN. Let the war proceed for a turn or two, then build it and hope no one is looking.

We learn Fission, start on Space Flight.
Palace Expansion; we build the first level on the other side of the palace.
Confirm losses of The Council; 10 Subs, 11 Destroyer and 2 Cruisers.
The War is no joke or fake attack.
Drop science to 0%, +1006 gpt, Space Flight in 25 turns.

We lack a settler to send with any invasion fleet, so no ships can move on The Council until next turn.

That gives some breathing room.

We will inform Saber that we will declare on Turn 240 by building a city on The Councils' land.
We will inform The Council that we will build a city on their land on Turn 240, and thus start the war.

In the meantime:
wake Free-Registrartion and send NW, into the waters between Saber and The Council.

No new pollution; two flat lands are still polluted.

We have 2 sources of Uranium, one by Marad-Dur and the other by Gilligan of Gong.

After rushing workers and settlers in Gong, we have 320 gold, +972 gpt.

Drat! Forgot to start moving some transports out of Coastal Geeks and around to Gong.

Why in the world is BABE Despotic (I think I spelled that wrong). I had a dream last night that the COUNCIL had three cities left this turn. Does SABER play before of after us?

BABE gets more unit support and no WW is Despotism. Turn order is BABE -> Council -> SABER -> FREE

Just getting started.

I've got my notes transferred from Turn 237 to 238 and I'm fixing to download the save. I thought I already had it on this PC, but I was wrong.

Had SGOTM 14 to deal with this weekend, too.

General Notes and Plans
Lots of workers and settlers buld this turn. Thirteen workers and 15 settlers.

Find what looks like the main Saber Invasion force, 2S-SW of The Pier (our FreeToes).
Consists of:

2 vCarriers
1 eCruiser
3 vCruisers
1 vDestroyer
6 vTransports
3 rTransports

That is 54 units to land in one turn. That is going to hurt.

Sugar-Free Surprise scouts the coast of Babe. Babe cities defended with MechInf.

We plant some forests in Old Gong.

I had a lucky accident. I rushed a settler in Free. I rushed many in Gong, thinking I could air lift them back to Free, but that doesn't work. So the new settler in Free will sail to The Council.

Settler106 loads into Lydia Sutherland.
Lydia Sutherland sails 6 S.
Lydia Sutherland is joined by Lydia Sutherland and Free-At-Last.

Wake our transports and escorts in Coastal Geeks and sail towards Unshackled. From Unshackled we can reach Saber with only one turn at sea. They end at 2W-SW of Chicgao XII, but will arrive in Unshackled next turn. It is impossible to sneak along this section of our coast and stay in cities. Six Transports and 5 Escorts, plus what is already at sea.

Modern Paratroopers, do we need any?

In Freedom Central we have 41 units: 4 Bombers, 3 Mechs and 37 MAs.
Outside Freedom Central we have 10 MAs and 11 Marines.
58 units (Marines and MAs) to attack Saber.

Rush the Destroyer in Ellis Island for 128 of 1292 gold. Our Saber force has no destroyers and thus cannot find submarines.
Rush the Destroyer in Numenor for 172 of 1164 gold, for the same reason.

Near Free-Bird are 6 Saber ships: 2 Battleships and 4 Destroyers. They could intercept our Saber invasion force.

Except for the geek in Freedom Centeral, all geeks become taxmen. I have two big rushes next turn.

Need to join some of our new settlers to cities in Gong, but nowhere to join.

Space Flight in 49
992 gold (-900 gifted to The Council) = 92 gold.
+ 1096 gpt.

SABER must have landed, because the COUNCIL lost those tanks. If they didn't land they had some very lucky bombing.

I had a dream last night that me, my brother and Elephantium (I hope I spelled that right) were at my house. The road in front of my house was our border with the COUNCIL. There was no sea between us. SABER had taken all of the towns on the COUNCIL's south side. SABER sent a tank over to my house. In my dream tanks were as fast and as maneuverable as cars. SABER's tank was trying to run over us. I got hit, but all it did was push me a few feet. The tank never shot at us. And then I saw SABER's leader saying to some people "Get more tanks and get them, even if it means firing the guns". Then I saw three more tanks going out of SABER's base which was in the jungle (Which is weird because there's no jungle around here). Then I woke up.

Strange dream. I think it's a portent warning us that SABER will try to backstab us.

General Notes and Plans
Babe sends us 10 gold, WM and Military Tradition. We accept.

The island city of The Whale Pond of The Council (our Numenor) is now in ruins.

But the Saber Invasion Force, 2S-SW of The Pier has moved to 1S-3SE of The Pier. They moved 2E from their position last turn.

The units (Battleships and Destroyers) NE of The Tower moved also. It looks like the Destroyers pounded The Whale Pond (move 8, they could have reached it) and then The Council abandoned the city. The battleships are now 1W of Free-Ride.

I think that Saber is waiting for our invasion first before they invade from the south.

However, this invasion force should have visible to The Council last turn. It was just outside their cultural borders. Now it is in the shadows, based on its relationship to FreeToes.

The council has two fewer Bombers this turn than last, those may have been lost trying to attack the Saber Invasion Force. That force has two Aircraft Carriers, so somebody is surely on Combat Air Patrol. That could account for the Bomber losses.

On our invasion of Saber, we will have to capture and raze either Claymore (12) or Katana (12). There is no room to build a city between them.

Pollution is all gone.

Lydia Sutherland sails and unloads Settler106 onto The Council's land.

Rush the settler in Jungle-Free for 116 of 1154 gold.
Rush the transport in Unshackled for 392 of 1038 gold.
Will load up the transports next turn.

Attempt to plant spy in Saber for 100 of 646 gold. Fails.

That leaves 546 gold.

We send 500 of 546 gold to The Council.

Space Flight in 48; 546 gold, +1072 gpt.

Emails sent to The Council and Saber. Copy of the Saber email sent to The Council.

The northerly of the two invasion routes in the picture is too long - 7 squares instead of 6 on the second leg. We definitely need to use the more southerly of the two routes.

CommandoBob

Ouch! I see that now.

The problem with the southerly route is that at the end of the turn we are adjacent to a Saber Destroyer. That is bad news.

If we take the northern route on the first turn, we can take the middle route on the second turn and still invade.

I am open to another route, even maybe another turn at sea, if we can avoid Saber's picket line.

If we sail next turn (Turn 240) we will have one settler in the mix and about 7 transports (one was rushed in Unshackled this turn). That is around 40 attacking units. We also need a worker to rush an airfield.

Is that enough?

Maybe... SABER is pretty strong. Even with an invasion to the COUNCIL.

A few turns back we were Average compared to Saber. We know what we have and can guess what they have.

I wish we knew about their transports. If we knew how many transports they had we can better determine what their plans might be. And what we need to defend agaisnt.

We need more than 40 troops I think. 50 MA, 3 Mobile Sam, 7 Mechs would be better.

CommandoBob

In Debt-Free and Ellis Island we are building Destoyers that we could change to Transports and rush them next turn. That would add 2 more Transports.

We can change some Modern Armor builds to Mech Infantry and rush, too. Need to check on SAMs; we have none.

This pushes our invasion back by one turn, maybe more.

We can rush units in Gong next turn and airlift back to Free the following turn, but they cannot move anymore on that turn.

Do we need to switch our Wealth builds on Free to units? I think so, but would like some feedback on what to build where.

Empiremaker

We don't need to build more mechs. IF we have more room, we can put on MA. 3 Mobile Sams should kill any bombers SABER attacks with.

CommandoBob

We've got the time to add some. To attack with 50 units we need 9 transports; we have 7 right now and one is already in play with The Council. The other six are in Unshackled; they just arrived this turn. Unshackled is building a transport, it will complete this turn. That gives us 7 to load up on Turn 240.

Debt-Free and Ellis Island are making Destroyers that we could switch to Transports on Turn 240 and rush. Weltonspolt is still cranking out Transports but it is too far away to rush and use this next turn. Rush and use for reinforcements, yes, but that doesn't help with initial landing.

We have 3 Mech Infantry already in Production. All three will complete on Turn 141. We have several Modern Armor that we could switch to Mech Infantry next turn and, if needed, rush for Turn 141.

In a nutshell, it will take us two turns to have 9 Transports to invade Saber. In that time we will also build (naturally == no rushing) 3 Mech Infantry.

Of course, we can change those Mechs to SAMs. We can build more Mech Infantry and SAMs. SAMs first, then the Mechs, to blunt Saber's air force.
