View Full Version : Naming the provinces
mordhiem Aug 14, 2002, 05:21 AM A few weeks ago (infact when we had just started disscussing the second game) I suggested we name the provinces after regions on Mars. A few people said they liked it, but not many people said anything at all. So I am now using my leverage as Domestic Advisor to take an executive desicion. The provinces will be named after regions on Mars! Unless of course everyone hates the Idea, then it's poen to debate, but that kind of belittles my executive decision though doesn't it?
Anyway, our home province which includes the land currently under our possesion, and will be added to in the near future no doubt, shall be called one of the following:
Aonia
Chryshe
Isidis
Hesperia
Solis
Xanthe
There are plenty of others, but I think these are the best sounding ones.
ainwood Aug 14, 2002, 05:30 AM How 'bout Cydonia or Olympus Mons on the "other" option?
Daaraa Aug 14, 2002, 07:27 AM Alphabetical order would be nice. :)
Zwelgje Aug 14, 2002, 09:02 AM I kind of like the idea! :)
The names don't sound too stupid and they're not very long either, very convenient! Just name in alphabetical order like said by Daaraa. Why bother to make things more complicated I'd say.
Daaraa Aug 14, 2002, 09:36 AM I voted for the one that started with A.
We already have a C name. We just will need a B and perhaps a D before 1 AD. That'll be a ways off.
starlifter Aug 14, 2002, 10:19 AM Mordheim's executive suggestion and Daaraa's fine suggestion have my vote :D.
mordhiem Aug 14, 2002, 01:49 PM Fair enough, Aoinia it is!
anarchywrksbest Aug 14, 2002, 02:33 PM All those names sound cool so there is no chance of another 'Ariel' incident. Aonis sounds good enough :goodjob:
Octavian X Aug 15, 2002, 02:15 AM Aonia. If only I could pronounce it...
Zwelgje Aug 15, 2002, 02:38 AM You won't have to be able to pronounce it, as long as you can type it, it's good enough. ;)

What Ariel incident?
The names are fine but we won't have that many provinces because we're on a normal sized world. :)

Err, I think it's Ay-oh-nee-ah. I think. :)

What Ariel incident?
Surely you remember that in the last game Callisto was nearly called Ariel - after the mermaid.....it was a close call but good taste won in the end ;)
Serutan Aug 15, 2002, 12:05 PM My vote is for Helium, in honor of the Warlord of Mars.
Noting that it has no hope in this poll, I humbly request
that it be added as an option for the next one.
GenShwartzCough Aug 15, 2002, 03:38 PM Wow!! A John Carter fan! I like Helium too, but voted for Xanthe. Can we name the planet Barsoom? :D
Becka Aug 15, 2002, 03:48 PM Aonia. On the interent, you can make up your own pronunciations.....
Octavian X Aug 15, 2002, 05:35 PM Be careful with these province names. I got to name a province in the Civ3 demogame, and it turns out the name I chose was the same name as a race of barbarian horsemen who live in Asian Steppe. They were notorious for supposedly using the skin of their dead enemies as clothing, and drinking the blood of their first kill in battle...

COOL!! Now Barbarian Tribes there's an idea......
duke o' york Aug 16, 2002, 02:34 AM
So you didn't want a province named after Shakespeare's fairy and instead chose the name of a nymph who was raped by Zeus and then turned into a bear? She was rescued by an ashamed Zeus at the point when their son, a great hunter, was about to kill his mother and turned into the constellation Ursa Major.
Disney has nothing to do with this - it's a cool name for a province and I am tempted to push for it this time too, regardless of what the others are called. Maybe I'll just have my city named Ariel. :)
On topic (just), on the interent you can make up your own spellings! ;) (Sorry Becka, I couldn't resist this childish joke). But no-one should worry about pronunciation! Or shall we have monosyllabic province names in future? :)
Octavian X Aug 16, 2002, 02:39 AM Or, well just name our provinces after numbers! Province 1, Province 2, etc... Can't mispronounce of misspell it.

I missed that. What did you name it?
I'm still in favour of alphabetical order. Numbered provinces seem a little...unimaginative. However I think we need some order to what is done.

Or shall we have monosyllabic province names in future? :) If you are referring to Callisto, she was also one of Zena's favorite arch-enemies in the TV show; rather a knock-out actually :groucho: So the "Ariel incident" really came down to which did you want, a cartoon red-headed mermaid, or a cartoonish blonde bad girl?
Octavian X Aug 16, 2002, 12:31 PM @Daaraa
I named my province 'Scythia.' It was the seventh province, contain captured Greecian cities. The barbarian tribe I was refering to are the Scythians. In fact, I believe it is one of the names for a barbarian tribe in Civ3.
Ren Aug 25, 2002, 02:20 AM I know that Aonis has been chosen, but I like Solis because Sol is the centre of our Galaxy so Solis is sort of the centre of our empire...
Ah, never mind :crazyeye:
duke o' york Aug 27, 2002, 02:17 AM Did you fall asleep at the end of the last game?
Alpha Centauri is at the centre of our current solar system! ;)
Dell19 Aug 27, 2002, 03:04 AM Did we ever decide where the spaceship would be going this time?
mordhiem Aug 27, 2002, 05:55 AM Lets go to Betelgeuse!
Vengeance Aug 29, 2002, 05:39 PM Lets take the whole Mars thing a step further. What about having Mars - Bringer of War as the national anthem? I would like hope that I am not the only one on this thread that listens to The Planets. Try Mars on repeat all day. It certainly drives you to go all out fundy the moment you get SOL. (Not hinting anything at all);)

If that is the case, why is it a solar system then? ;)
Zwelgje Sep 02, 2002, 07:06 AM Because it's the name of a system containing a star surrounded by planets. ;)
Dell19 Sep 03, 2002, 02:27 AM I think Ren is pointing to the fact, that if its still a solar system then Solis would still have the relevant connection that Duke disagreed with.
