Bigfoot3814 Nov 05, 2008, 06:14 PM Random Raves Three (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=288097).
Feeling good about some random thing? Tell us about it!
Thank Catharsis for that title.
I got to start the new thread.
Catharsis Nov 05, 2008, 06:15 PM Drat you Bigfoot! We cross-threadposted :(
But it's Random Raves Four, surely :mischief:
EDIT: Ooh, ninja title edit too, crafty devil

Spoken like a true american:salute:

Catharsis Nov 05, 2008, 06:18 PM Normally I propose a dance-off in situations like these, but I doubt I could beat you (EDIT: Bigfoot. I would pwn Taras Bulba :p) in one of those.

Mad Man Nov 05, 2008, 06:24 PM sooo the old thread will no longer be used?
Bigfoot3814 Nov 05, 2008, 06:26 PM Eventually it'll get locked by the moderators. Usually after 1000 posts in one of these series threads, we start over with a fresh one. I don't fully understand why, but I don't mind because it's fun to jockey for position to start the new thread.
Abaddon Nov 05, 2008, 06:30 PM Im' really happy I am over my thread addiction.. i didn't even monitor the last one! ;)

So as not to spam, here's an actual rave: things sort of seem to be going OK. I mean, there's all this economy nonsense and Russia and partisan hackery of all shapes and sizes but to be honest, those things just doesn't seem to be worrying my little head like they should. And then some fool comes along and starts talking about black swans and all of a sudden bam, no more contentment for you sunshine. But for now, joy joy joy.

GoodGame Nov 05, 2008, 08:04 PM I'm pretty mad that the Taliban and Osama didn't mind their own durn bizness over 7 years ago.
I'm pretty mad that the Repubs didn't focus on the economy before it became a daming point this year.

Eran of Arcadia Nov 06, 2008, 08:07 AM I rave that I am making excellent time on my NaNo. Spending only about an hour a night writing, I am still ahead of the pace I need to win, which I have never done before (the first year, I didn't even start until the 6th.) At this rate, I may finish a little early, and I can still spend plenty of time with my lady friend.

Good. You can write part of mine.
I think I've actually hit my pace only twice so far.
Eran of Arcadia Nov 06, 2008, 08:35 AM The trick is not to use contractions or compound words (which I have to remember not to do here - it's okay to say "everything", not "every thing") although that probably only gives me a few hundred extra words.
Love Nov 06, 2008, 03:28 PM I rave that i subscribe

Andromeda Strain + Jurassic Park + textbook Evolution theory + Arnold the Govinator might get my creativity sparked.

Mad Man Nov 10, 2008, 09:47 PM Don't say it like that. It makes me look like a monster:crazyeye:
Dachs Nov 10, 2008, 11:06 PM I finished the second installment of my alternate history (Our Mutual Fiend - Sledgehammer - Man in a Suitcase). Stuff is actually diverging now, it's been some seven years since the PoD. Pretty happy with how it turned out. :)
Mowque Nov 10, 2008, 11:15 PM Dachs...i'm a big Alt-history fan....is it online somewhere?
Dachs Nov 10, 2008, 11:37 PM Dachs...i'm a big Alt-history fan....is it online somewhere?
Yeah, it's in the NES Alternate History Thread IV: The Sequel. All installments are located on this page (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=225910&page=82); it's written as more of a history-book as opposed to a story per se, so don't expect something like canonized's Timelines from me. :p
Mowque Nov 10, 2008, 11:39 PM NES?.....explain...
Dachs Nov 10, 2008, 11:44 PM NES?.....explain...
There's a whole subforum (http://forums.civfanatics.com/forumdisplay.php?f=69) here on CFC devoted to these games called 'Never-Ending Stories' (which in reality do end, and sometimes don't have a lot to do with stories). They're usually involving each player taking control of a country and having it out with one another in various fashions. I suppose it's kind of vaguely like a political MUD, if you want to put it that way. In any event, in order to get ideas for NES settings, a few of us have been posting alternate histories for quite some time. There's a link to the NES alternate history repository in my sig, actually. Catharsis hates us (:p), but we're a fun bunch.

I'm actually a tiny bit worried. The police think we're going to have fights (The bus of Chicago fans get a special Columbus Police escort). I happen to live, literally, across the street from the Crew fan club HQ, and only a few min away from Crew Stadium. If any after game hi jinks go down, its going to be in my hood.

That part pissed me off so much. I mean, I didn't like Charlie at all, but he had plenty of time to get out the door himself, too, and even if he didn't, to still try and break the window. He just sort of resigned himself to dying, and that annoyed me.
Of course, there are other people I would've rather seen go than him, namely, that stupid British chic with the baby that he drools over. Every time she speaks I want to reach through the TV screen and slap her.
Eran of Arcadia Nov 15, 2008, 02:25 PM The character and the actress are both Australian . . .
Cheezy the Wiz Nov 15, 2008, 02:52 PM Well you know who I'm talking about. I hate her all the same.
Mirc Nov 15, 2008, 02:56 PM My girlfriend was cheating on me and thanks to her own stupidity I found out even though I wasn't looking! On top of that, she was on IM right now, in invisible mode, and had at her status "I love you my <little lover>" (can't really translate the last part, it's a diminutive from a word meaning beloved person).
So I started a couple of stealth programs that I have on my computer and hid myself under another name, taking the name from the name she had at the status, started talking to her, made her believe she was talking to someone else, and then suddenly letting her know I'm not exactly who she thinks I am.
Then I hacked into her account (dumb security question, figured her postal code out from her address), and sent a pretty freaking embarrassing message to everyone, including that guy she was talking to. Then I sent it to the guy from which she was trying to obtain a contract for some recordings (yes, musician just like me), and later I even sent it to her "teacher" (around here in highschool you have a teacher that is "assigned" to a class, like a higher authority than a normal teacher) and she - the teacher- even answered to ask me if I'm serious. After that she got a message from the guy she wanted that contract with, and he sounded really cold and basically told her to f-off in a very polite manner. And then, to seal everything, I sent it to her mother's email too.
All in all, don't mess with a guy with knowledge in computer who happens to have a lot of relations exactly in the field you are "working" in (music). You DON'T know what to expect. The revenge is soooo good after the humiliation! You can't even imagine how good it feels!!
Then I discovered this in a site similar to myspace/facebook:

Mirc Nov 15, 2008, 03:14 PM geez Mirc...guess your not into live and let live...
I lost a part of my morals after being humiliated in front of people I care about as much as I USED to care about her.
You know, when you do the amount of things that I did for her and get this kinda treatment back, you ARE gonna love the revenge! I could have shown her things she would have never dreamed of. I'm serious. I was about to take her with me to a 2 week trip through Italy that I'm making for some concerts.... and many things that fall under the definition of a "broad horizon".

Funny fact #n: When I tried to talk to her at first, she pretended her father was on the computer. And I asked whether the supposed "he" at the computer had chest hair or something else on his chest. And then she stopped talking to me realizing I might know more than I should.

JustinianVII Nov 18, 2008, 09:01 PM Got an A on a difficult and rather weighty paper I thought I did kinda horrible on, which is a big relief to my mind. :woohoo: Seems like all my grades are in good shape...so long as I don't screw up or get complacent in the last 4-5 week stretch, I could be on the way to a 4.0.
carmen510 Nov 18, 2008, 09:05 PM Got mostly B+'s, and my Latin grade is a B! (Thought it was to be lower)
Trajan12 Nov 18, 2008, 09:24 PM Well on my way to a 4.1 for next quarter report. But god I regret taking that drama class that I usually skip now anyway. Goddamn 83. But I guess I have more than enough time to bring it up by pretending to give a crap.
Taras Bulba Nov 18, 2008, 09:26 PM my Academic team dominated in the competition today, coming in 8th out of 82 I believe. AND, on top of that, we only had 2 people when every other team had AT LEAST 4 people (as 4 are allowed, we just didn't have enough players)
it was amazing, and it was very fun
CCRunner Nov 18, 2008, 09:30 PM I don't think I'm going to get a 4.0 this quarter. Stupid AP classes giving me B's. I don't think I can bring it up either. Plus the Final is a project as opposed to a major test. For most of the people in my class, that's a rave but I'm super good at multiple choice tests and now I have to do a project that will take around a week of work.
Bigfoot3814 Nov 18, 2008, 09:35 PM Just so you know, a B in an AP class looks better than an A in a regular class.

Mirc Nov 19, 2008, 09:47 AM I made the most amazing chain of presenting only one point of view of information and lies that I thought of in 5 seconds and it worked miraculously. It's unbelievable how everybody believed it straight away and the guy that I was protecting through that got away so well that he actually gained a lot of respect from this whole thing. And it's one of those things that, if enough time passes (think 2-3 months), nobody will ever be able to find out the real variant, and it won't matter. :D
So I helped an almost-innocent friend of mine who helped me a lot to gain back his reputation through very fast and successful thinking. :D

Ah. This place (http://www.hsquizbowl.org/forums/viewforum.php?f=33&sid=4bea8a9c77868e7c0f32655407b4098e) is an excellent way to gain information on quiz bowl tournaments in your area. Being in New Jersey, you're kinda stuck between DC metro area's tournaments (which are the best in the country HELL YEAH :p) and the ones up around New York and New England. Travel time would be painful. I hear there's some interesting stuff in Delaware that Wilmington Charter just kind of gets away with ganking for frees; if you played in some of those and showed them up that'd be funny.
salty mud Nov 19, 2008, 02:13 PM My Xbox came back today!!! :woohoo:
Shekwan Nov 19, 2008, 02:25 PM I have to actually do college work tonight and get up at 10am to do the damn test!
It's in economics too which I have little interest in so theres no upside to this work.
salty mud Nov 19, 2008, 02:26 PM YOU CALL THAT A RAVE!? WHAT IS THIS!?
I have a test tommorow which I feel somewhat confident for. :)
Nylan Nov 19, 2008, 02:28 PM I really am kind of starting to like Safari. Not going to overtake Opera as my 2nd browser though.
It better not :trouble:
Food somehow tastes better when you know the people who made it didn't get paid

I might recommend it to my adviser for the club, but I doubt anything will happen...
do you go to these things? or do you just laugh at my nerdy-ness

You could say that I have some experience in quizballin', yeah. The team that I captained last year won NAQT nationals...:p
azzaman333 Nov 19, 2008, 04:25 PM Australia won even though we played like crap. Thank you Schwarzer and Bresciano.

just out of curiosity,
A-do you each get specific categories to study? or is it like our team where we all have a general idea of everything (for the most part) with 3-4 categories we're best at (e.g.-my categories are geography, biology, history (despite what you may think), and perhaps math (I'd like to be in Calculus before I consider it MY category))
B-if you said yes to A, what categories are you?
C-what are some of the questions like?
D-what is the age range of this competition... like, I'm a sophomore in HS, and even though I consider myself intelligent, I don't think compared to alot I'm all that great

Usually we'd identify what people were best at (we kept the same A team throughout the year, barring a few isolated events early in the fall and winter), then have them just go and read up on their own as they normally would. Practices would just involve us reading through packets to get a sense of the canon and of frequently used clues.
My problem now is that my college team is rather...underdeveloped, so I usually end up handling everything or almost everything. But back in high school I usually ended up handling history, geography, a large chunk of literature, and some computer science. Oh, and trash. :p
C-what are some of the questions like?
Usually about a paragraph (4-5 lines) of text. They don't like to provide recent examples of their less sucky questions without you paying for them, though, which is annoying. Red Door probably has a better sense for what's actually in the questions now.
D-what is the age range of this competition... like, I'm a sophomore in HS, and even though I consider myself intelligent, I don't think compared to alot I'm all that great
High school.
Taras Bulba Nov 19, 2008, 07:38 PM I'll point it out to my advisor, although I doubt she'll end up taking it.
not to mention I'm moving soon anyway, so even if SHE did accept I doubt I'd go there anyway. My better bet would to push for it in my new school out by Phoenix. I best get studying now then, as I can only imagine this would be a BIG leg up from what I'm used to in Academic team :P
EDIT: I just remembered to ask this... is this one of those retarded competitions where you have to get the EXACT answer or else its no go. In the last competition we went to (the Mon. Don. one that I was happy 'bout) there were about 100 points ('bout 4ish questions) that we didn't get ('bout 70 of which went to the other team(s)) because we missed things by one word
things like saying "Trickle-down Effect" instead of "Trickle-down Economics" and the other one I can remember was "Quantum Physics" instead of "Quantum Mechanics" (although I can see why the second one was wrong)

There are multiple acceptable answers for stuff like that, or you may get prompted to clarify your answer. For some stuff, such as To a Nightingale, screwing up an article is Bad News though - but since it's a title that would make sense, nicht wahr?
Red Door Nov 19, 2008, 09:15 PM my Academic team dominated in the competition today, coming in 8th out of 82 I believe. AND, on top of that, we only had 2 people when every other team had AT LEAST 4 people (as 4 are allowed, we just didn't have enough players)
it was amazing, and it was very fun
Quiz Bowl is awesome, although you do not live in the greatest area for it.

If I was in New Jersey, I would try to get the team to go to the Washington D.C. area tournaments - they really are the best. (For example, February 7th at Gonzaga College High School in Washington D.C.) New England teams are pretty weak from first-hand experience. In your area, you should try to go to Hunter (they're still having a tournament, right?) or Wilmington Charter on December 20th.
I might recommend it to my adviser for the club, but I doubt anything will happen...

I go.

NAQT is weak. :p

A - Specializing is always the best. My team, for example, has one very, very good player. I do not need to get more than 2-3 questions a game for us to win. If you can do math, you will be able to win points on NAQT. Most good teams in the D.C. area (my experience) are terrible at math. I have yet to see a team other than a select few be good at math. Being good at science is an excellent plus. If you are good at science, that's even better. Some teams (including mine) are never good at science, and that is what kills us. Knowing geography is key too. If you are absolutely solid at geography, math, and science, you could score big points in NAQT sets and hold your own in PACE, ACF, and house-written tournaments.
B - Geography, Trash, some History, and Physics (which is not saying much because I am terrible at that).
D - It varies by team. My team is 2 seniors and a mix of 1 other senior, 2 juniors, and 1 sophomore. If you are starting as a sophomore and you work at it (and go to good tournaments), you will be a great player next year. Reading packets helps a lot. Writing down answers you miss in practice/tournaments help a lot. Writing questions helps the most, but you need a lot of experience to do it. NAQT has a useful list of "You Outta Knows" for basic stuff on their website. I suggest you get acquainted with that. If you know that stuff, you will do better than most teams. As you learn more and more, you can go deeper and deeper into various questions that appear again.
Anyways, best of luck to you.
Dachs Nov 19, 2008, 09:18 PM NAQT is weak. :p
Eh, PACE ain't that much better, and ACF is irregular. ;)
