LightFang Nov 06, 2008, 08:33 PM Disclaimer: I don't play Fall from Heaven, nor do I ever expect to. So, feel free to point out any of the wild inaccuracies that is bound to appear within this game. Don't actually expect me to do anything about them. Maybe if you close your eyes and forget about them they won't bother you as much.
A wind rattled the gates of the empty Castle Stonemoor. And a world away, a butterfly's vibrations were about to cause a hurricane...
The regiment moved as quietly as mice, which is to say that they were rather loud because mice, if you ever decided to be quiet for once and really pay attention to the poor buggers, were actually quite loud relative to their size. A more appropriate expression in fact would be as quiet as silence, except that would not have the same sort of stylistic effect and in any case this army was moving fairly loudly.
Somewhere, far away, a trumpet rang. Nobody picked up.
...
It was, as would later be noted by esteemed historians such as Shaka III that when the walls fell at the Battle of Oiav, that this was the only known battle in history wherein both the Bannor forces and the Clan of Embers ambushed each other simultaneously. The exact details of how exactly this inexplicable situation came about are lost in the sands of history, but needless to say it was incredibly intriguing and probably would have done wonders for the art of military science. Steel clashed against other metals occasionally, but mostly it was steel as the Bannor struck, deep within Orc territory. The crusade had spanned months and had been wildly successful, if you believed the leadership that is. Most of the actual crusaders were kind of tired because they hadn't sacked a city per se and escaped with fabulous hordes of wealth. Sure, the first few times descending upon innocent villagers was morale-boosting, but even the most simple peasant boy gets a bit jaded after the twelfth time he's raped their dinners and eaten their wives. So, you can understand the enthusiasm with which the Bannor smashed their enemy. The Orcs, to their credit, were fighting for their own survival. And also they were fairly bloodthirsty anyway, taking most offenses as excuses for a bloodbath. If they would fight to the death over littering, just imagine what they would do when one of their prized cities was being attacked...
In the middle of this maelstrom of destruction, a beast awoke, rising up through the floor and breathing fire in general directions. At least, it looked like a beast. Maybe it was one of the gods playing a cruel trick on them. In any case, that matter was not given much introspection before the mass's brains, hijacking the higher thought processes in a desperate attempt to survive, decided that perhaps they could deal with the question later and started the physical motions of running. The crowd gained camaraderie for a bit as they ran from a common foe, but the more opportunistic of the fleeing soldiers cut down members of the opposition as they ran and ran and ran and looted some gold and ran.
Now the goal of the Bannor crusade was much more personal and that much more appealing. Get out of Orc territory. Now.

I hope you understood the rather hastily written backstory. In any case, welcome to my first hosting of NotW! I hope to make this game successful, although, given my track record, I doubt that my goals will be achieved. Let's press forward in any case.
There will be two (2) threads devoted to the running of this one (1) game. Feel free to choose which thread you wish to participate in; I must have an equal number of people in each thread, so if you're the odd player out, you'll get first spot in the reserve list.
I will also be assigning parts, and no, you don't get to influence your decision.

Icekommander Nov 06, 2008, 08:48 PM Interesting read!
Edit: I'll go first
Chandrasekhar Nov 06, 2008, 09:17 PM Put me in the first thread.
sirtommygunn Nov 06, 2008, 09:20 PM I'm in, maybe I won't die first this time.
Renata Nov 06, 2008, 09:52 PM I'll be the first into the second thread.
Oh, and do you mind if I borrow your disclaimer for when we finally get around to my game? It might come in handy. :D
thomas.berubeg Nov 07, 2008, 08:30 AM Thread 1, please
Snerk Nov 07, 2008, 09:13 AM Great! second thread please. Although i havent played a NotW game before, any crazy rules i need to know about?
Methos Nov 07, 2008, 10:24 AM Signing up!
Ekolite Nov 07, 2008, 10:30 AM Thread 2 please.
Izipo Nov 07, 2008, 10:32 AM Great story.
Second thread for me, where all the cool people are, and we have ladies too.
Methos Nov 07, 2008, 10:42 AM I'll be in the second thread.
J-man Nov 07, 2008, 10:46 AM Count me in! I prefer the 2nd thread.
Niklas Nov 07, 2008, 11:29 AM As much as I think thread 2 is becoming bloated, I couldn't see myself playing without my Smurkz buddies. So thread 2 it is for me too. I'm sure thread 1 will fill up though, still lots of people to appear.
Very nice writeup LF!
Sneerk, welcome to the asylum! All you could ever want to know and more can be found in the NOTW Information Thread (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=269486). :)
merciary Nov 07, 2008, 11:39 AM Well seeing how many are in thread two, I guess I'll go thread one.
D'Artagnan59 Nov 07, 2008, 02:17 PM I don't care which thread.
Love Nov 07, 2008, 03:10 PM I'm in thread 2.
Terrance888 Nov 07, 2008, 04:15 PM Very nice backstory! Wonder what this time will be like.
Izipo Nov 07, 2008, 08:32 PM Told you all the cool people were in thread two... ;)
Tasslehoff Nov 07, 2008, 10:23 PM Excellent write up. I sense Terry Pratchett's influence.
Thread 2, if you please
LightFang Nov 08, 2008, 12:52 AM Oh, and do you mind if I borrow your disclaimer for when we finally get around to my game? It might come in handy. :D
No, not at all, feel free. :)
Excellent write up. I sense Terry Pratchett's influence.
Terry Pratchett? The man who wrote Feet of Clay which I've recently finished and The Light Fantastic which I'm reading now?
Nope, I've never heard of him.
Update: Icekommander and D'Artagnan59 have been shunted to Thread One to even out the threads a little.
merciary Nov 08, 2008, 01:52 AM Can either the Luggage or Death (or in this case I'd guess it would be Arawn) make a cameo appearance. You have no idea how happy I'd be. :p
Izipo Nov 08, 2008, 06:52 AM Terry Pratchett? The man who wrote Feet of Clay which I've recently finished and The Light Fantastic which I'm reading now?
Nope, I've never heard of him.
Dude, you gotta set your priorities straight : Read 'Reaper man' first, and 'Small gods', and... read them all. ;)
Ekolite Nov 08, 2008, 07:00 AM Small Gods is one of my favourites. Also the later City-watch-based ones are great.
Renata Nov 08, 2008, 07:22 AM Night Watch is my favorite, even if it did make me cry.
Granny is my favorite character, though, and I really love Lords and Ladies, Witches Abroad, Wyrd Sisters and all of those.
Love Nov 08, 2008, 11:18 AM Witches abroad is awesome.
Icekommander Nov 08, 2008, 09:26 PM *cough*thishasgoneamileofftopic*cough*
We need some more oneers
reverend oats Nov 09, 2008, 07:25 AM I'll sign up for thread 1.
LightFang Nov 11, 2008, 01:51 AM I'd like some more members before starting.
(Also I need more time to write up starting PMs.)
Tasslehoff Nov 11, 2008, 03:12 AM I like the Night Watch ones the best. Are you sure those two are the only ones you've read? Because your 'history' description bears an uncanny resemblance to a historical battle from Thud!
Love Nov 11, 2008, 04:40 AM Intresting times is awesome.
Izipo Nov 11, 2008, 06:21 AM I like the Night Watch ones the best. Are you sure those two are the only ones you've read? Because your 'history' description bears an uncanny resemblance to a historical battle from Thud!
Thanks Tasslehoff, that's the one I was thinking about, but couldn't remember precisely.
And @Love : They're all awesome... Some just more than others ;)
Anyone read 'Good Omens' ?
Niklas Nov 11, 2008, 11:07 AM Good Omens is absolutely brilliant, two of my absolute favorite authors doing a book together.
LightFang Nov 11, 2008, 11:10 AM I like the Night Watch ones the best. Are you sure those two are the only ones you've read? Because your 'history' description bears an uncanny resemblance to a historical battle from Thud!
I've read:
The Colour of Magic
Guards! Guards!
Men at Arms
Feet of Clay
and am in the process of reading:
The Light Fantastic
I find the Night Watch ones the best myself. Though, I still love Rincewind.
But heck, those are the only two "paths" (I'm unsure of the proper terminology!) I've read so far. Beggars can't be choosers.
Ekolite Nov 11, 2008, 11:27 AM I need to read Good Omens, I keep meaning to...
Izipo Nov 11, 2008, 11:34 AM Good Omens is absolutely brilliant, two of my absolute favorite authors doing a book together.
Uncanny sometimes how alike we think.
Probably the best End of the world/Comedy book ever written.
Say, wouldn't it make a great background for a NotW spinoff... ?
<snip>
But heck, those are the only two "paths" (I'm unsure of the proper terminology!) I've read so far. Beggars can't be choosers.
Take your pick : The Rincewind Saga (8 books)
The guards footpath (8 books)
The Witches trilogy (4 books!)
The DEATH books (3 books)
And the new Moist von Lipwig saga (2 books so far)
Or the others...
My personal recommendation to you would be 'Small Gods'.
And we got started on this offtopicky path because your battle looked like the battle of Koom valley between the dwarves and trolls; Both sides say it was an ambush and both claim it as a victory.
But enough of Pratchett, where are the other players ??
Damn, I really miss Pinman... PM anyone ?
LightFang Nov 11, 2008, 03:05 PM I didn't PM anyone yet...I will begin to do so once I have more of the character PMs written up.
(Also some ideas on whom to bother would be nice!)
thomas.berubeg Nov 11, 2008, 05:08 PM PrinceScamp, for one...
Ekolite Nov 11, 2008, 05:13 PM Yeah I was going to suggest him. You could also try pinman, although I doubt he will join :(.
Niklas Nov 11, 2008, 05:39 PM Pinman won't join no. But anyone who played the last game should be a prime candidate.
NovaOvis Nov 12, 2008, 06:04 PM After reading the older threads, this looks fun, so I'll be joining in thread one. Please don't make me a werewolf on my first time please! :)
Stuck in Pi Nov 13, 2008, 06:10 AM oh crap... Completely missed this thread...
Put me where ever I am needed...
Izipo Nov 13, 2008, 11:33 AM Great, now we need Backwards Logic too. But I haven't seen him in a while.
And a big welcome to NovaNovis, players with 0 postcount rulz.
I suppose you read carefully the NotW information thread ?
Ekolite Nov 13, 2008, 03:23 PM Welcome NovaNovis!
I would have thought he flicked through it at least, because he said he had read through a few old ones. The easiest way to do that is through the info thread :).
Also, I resent your email with a compatible version of the file. :)
Icekommander Nov 15, 2008, 07:02 PM Welcome Nova Ovis! You realize of course, that your statement has just lined you up for wolfyness(I really don't know of course, but knowing some of the senses of humour on the forums...)
Mergle Nov 16, 2008, 06:25 AM If this is still open for signups, count me in whereever I'll fit.
LightFang Nov 16, 2008, 12:26 PM It's still open.
And perfect, 20 players. That's the minimum I wanted before I was going to start.
I'll PM people today, close signups on Friday or so, and then start next Monday.
At least, that's the plan.
Backwards Logic Nov 16, 2008, 05:09 PM I suppose I'll sign-up as a replacement should one be needed, but if someone else joins in I would like thread 2 if possible.
cvlowe Nov 21, 2008, 08:38 PM Sign me up as reserve!
Oh, BTW...
I'M BACK!
Ekolite Nov 22, 2008, 05:06 AM Who are you?
Niklas Nov 22, 2008, 05:35 AM Kol, you are sorely betraying your newbieness to this forum. :p
Welcome back, ancient one. Now I'm no longer the oldest around here. ;)
Ekolite Nov 22, 2008, 05:39 AM [QUOTE=Niklas;7474335]Kol, you are sorely betraying your newbieness to this forum. :pQUOTE]
Shhhh! No one's supposed to know about that! :p
Welcome back cvlowe.
thomas.berubeg Nov 22, 2008, 10:55 AM Cvlowe... Been a long time.... Welcome Back!
cvlowe Nov 22, 2008, 11:40 AM Who are you?
I played in a lot of the early games.
Has Unser ever returned?
Catharsis Nov 22, 2008, 11:51 AM {'Fraid not. At least, not to my knowledge.
By the way, cvlowe, LightFang's doing blind signups here - the game can take as many people as wish to sign up, within reason. So all the spots haven't been filled up - you don't have to be a reserve. Just in case that's your reasoning. :)
EDIT: Hold on, he said he'd close signups on Friday, so maybe not. :dunno:}

Then maybe he can add me somewhere since I requested a spot Friday :)
LightFang Nov 24, 2008, 07:04 PM My computer blew up, so no NotW for you all.
If you'll wait about a week...
Sorry for the delay, this annoys me too!
thomas.berubeg Nov 24, 2008, 07:27 PM awww... again? that sucks... good luck with getting stuff back
cvlowe Nov 24, 2008, 07:29 PM A week is no problem.
LightFang Dec 04, 2008, 06:11 PM UPDATE: Computer's back, expect things to be cleared up soon. Monday is my projected start day.
cvlowe Dec 12, 2008, 08:12 PM Has the game started yet?
LightFang Dec 13, 2008, 12:44 AM I just don't think I can do it. I'm absolutely not in the mood.
Sorry. Expect it to come back sometime in the future.
Ekolite Dec 13, 2008, 04:16 AM I just don't think I can do it. I'm absolutely not in the mood.
Sorry. Expect it to come back sometime in the future.
Ok that's fine. Can anyone else do a game?
Renata Dec 13, 2008, 07:38 AM Next time try to figure that out before two months have passed, ok? :gripe:
Sorry, it's just getting a bit ridiculous.
Ekolite Dec 13, 2008, 08:40 AM I have to agree, I think I'm suffering from NOTW withdrawal here. :p
EDIT: Christmas Smillies!
J-man Dec 13, 2008, 09:10 AM Next time try to figure that out before two months have passed, ok? :gripe:
Sorry, it's just getting a bit ridiculous.
I thought it was common, my first NOTW was the one where Pinman was supposed to GM but then he went AWOL.
Ekolite Dec 13, 2008, 09:30 AM No, actually we usually have a pretty continuous stream of NOTW, although not all players play in every game I don't think.
thomas.berubeg Dec 13, 2008, 09:50 AM it's only been the last fwe that have been like that.
Ekolite Dec 13, 2008, 10:14 AM Besides a few ''breaks''. It's been fairly continous since I joined NOTW in my opinion. My fist was Nero's Fire's one.
Izipo Dec 14, 2008, 04:21 PM Don't be too harsh on yourself LF, it is after all a very time consuming task.
Having a game for the holiday season would be nice, though.
LightFang Dec 14, 2008, 04:40 PM No, you all mistake me. I'm almost done with everything; I'm just not in the mood to host a game. Must be SAD or something.
Mergle Dec 19, 2008, 03:19 PM So, is another one going to be run by anyone? I guess noone's going to have time over the festive season to put one together but is one in the pipeline? When might it be? If noone's likely to be ready soon I have an idea I could probably flesh out quite quickly (Orcs!!!) but I don't want to step on anyone's toes.
Ekolite Dec 19, 2008, 03:21 PM See the information thread for information.
There's a link in my sig.
Niklas Dec 19, 2008, 03:22 PM Backwards Logic is doing one Very Soon (tm), as noted in the NOTW discussion thread. But it's great that you have a plan too, Mergle! :)
Niklas Dec 22, 2008, 05:51 AM BL posted The Road to Ruin (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?p=7575808). Don't miss it.
