Is AWESOME.

I am pissed off I didn't manage to take a picture of the burning tank (think hulk but smaller) as it pummelled me to death. Three other people and I spent over an hour, maybe hour and a half trying to beat subway on expert, then got a looping sound crash. We got ot the final room a few times, but the last time, there was a wtich up on the boardwalk so we didn't manage to get to the safe room :(\

If you preorder it on Steam you can download the demo, and it's worth it (also it is $5 less).

My computer just makes minimum system requirements so I'm not sure it would work on mine. Which means I have to wait for the public demo before I'm allowed to see. I am jealous of those who can buy L4D without worrying if their money will be wasted. :(

Killing zombies.

Not sure if there's anything more to it than that, but hell, if it Valve manage to make it as fun, it won't matter.

There are very very very few co-op games for the PC, and Left 4 Dead is a 4 person co-op game, which you can play by yourself, with random people and/or people on your steam friends list through the campaign. The only other FPS co-op game I know of is the Synergy mod for Half-Life 2.

I'm rather interested in this game and I may get it for the 360. Now, is it just a co-op game on the same set amount of levels? Or are there going to be different maps to play on?

sirtommygunn
Nov 07, 2008, 07:45 PM
Different maps that do different things every time you play them. There is 4 right now I think.

Maniacal
Nov 07, 2008, 08:05 PM
Only two maps in the demo, and it is all co-op, even singleplayer (the Ai fills in for any charactor without a player). I look forward to a few or several months time once community maps start comming out. As while the zombie placement is randomized each time you play (after each time ther team dies too, so no memorising anything!) the same 2 levels over and over again get's repeptitive by yourself.

I died. Also we killed a wtich. She was at the top (just outside the window) of the stairs that lead into the generator room at the end of the 2nd level, luckily it was all 4 of us that were together, usually there is one idiot who attracts her on purpose or someone rushing ahead or the other two are dead.

Witches really aren't that tough.

Okay, now I understand what people have said about odd textures, alt-tabbing fixes this. It happened to me twice now... only when you first load a map.

Try playing on Expert or Advance with other players, especially friends (real and/or internet).

The AI that takes over when a player goes idle or when a playable character has no player is actually really really good. And the AI that controls your enemies, how they spawn, from where, how many, where items will be palced, etc based off your progress, health, kills, skill etc is awesomely good for replayability.

I was thinking last night in bed after a two-hour binge of L4D check this out:

Let a player be the AI Director. It can be based on a points system and he controls where the guns and grenads spawn. If he places more grenades and the tier 2 weapons cache closer to the survivor spawn than he gets more points to purchase boomers, smokers, etc and during the gameplay, he can purchase a zombie swarm to try to overwhelm the survivors :-D. He could have a top-down view like a RTS kind of UI where he can choose among different menus to control where he wants the next zombie attack to come from and when

During the game he gets a constant trickle of points to keep the survivors on their toes, so they aren't just camping in one spot.

Yea you are going to run into asshats in public games who skimp out on dishing out equipment, but if the points and weapon caches were balanced it could be a lot of fun

We should try to play together, that would be fun.
Anyone available around 11PM GMT+1 tonight ?

Detailed review :
Install and options are a no-brainer. Starting vid is pretty cool.
First game in single player, all settings are low but my poor laptop isn't down on his knees which is a good surprise. Controls intuitive, even the orders menu.
Progress thru the level and it really gets my heart beating hard. The mix of frenzied action and careful exploration is really good. Sound effects and music are suitably creepy.

Second game in MP, missed Captain2 because his game was full, but after a few failed attempts I find 3 other cool guys and we have a blast doing the mission twice.
I can say that saving your friends is really cool, first time I play a real co-op game (TF2 doesn't count) and the feeling is great.

So, yeah, don't know yet if I'll buy the full game, but it sure looks great.
:goodjob: Valve.

I tried the demo too. Really nice atmosphere (feels like Dawn of the Dead and 28 days combined ) and good game elements (the odd zombie with special powers boomers, smokers, and hunters). The lack of destructibility in the environment, plus lack of HL2 physics, makes it a bit on the lame side for me.

Would love to see a L4Dead and TF2 cross over though. Pyros burning zombies would be a riot.

I was thinking of how fun it's be to play as TF2 chars with hordes of zombies to just slaughter.

There isn't a lot you can destroy anyways, and no reason to waste ammo taking apart cupboards/cabinents that could take quite a few shots to actually fall apart. And I don't see how you can know if it lacks HL2 physics or not.

I really liked the messages in the first safe room. Messages from the people before us, reminding us were not the only people dealing with the crisis. I also liked the ads and signs I've seen. For whatever reason they seem so much more realistic than similar ads and signs in other games.

Its obvious that there is no physics other than the character models. Compare it with HL2, and there's no puzzles, walls blowing up, objects to move and stack, etc... It'd be fun to have like a 'confidence course' where the team has to communicate to overcome obstacles--building bridges, etc...

Cool, one more TF2 class? What do you think it will be? A tank driver / armored golf cart? A helicopter? Maybe a Ranger who can climb walls and rappel down ropes?

Maniacal
Nov 16, 2008, 11:04 PM
I don't recall walls blowing up in Hl2, and I have seen items get knocked around (dish soap bottle, cereal box, etc). So I'm pretty sure it has the physics (which, really, are Source Engine and not specific to HL2, HL2 just uses them a lot more).

Izipo
Nov 17, 2008, 12:05 PM
Agree with Scamp. The physics are there, it's just that there is less of it than HL2. Haven't you seen tanks blowing stuff up and throwing them in your direction ?

Just finished the second campaign on advanced.
Got some real thrills on the last run, but Louis saved the day against the second tank.
Francis was already dead, Bill and I incapacited and the tank was chasing Louis around. It was very tense and I was sure we were all gonna die when he suddenly reappeared and we managed to finish him off (he literally died on top of me). Louis helped me up and we abandoned poor Bill behind some bushes while we made our dash to the boat as the final horde was coming.

Did you log-in to Steam? The catch with all things you buy with Steam, is that you have to be logged in to Steam, even if you aren't online. So don't lose your passwords/account.

The moment I have time to play the game again, it says that the game is currently "unavailable" and that I should try again later. I BOUGHT THIS GAME, IT SHOULD NOT FAIL.

It did that to me too when I tried to join a server that a friend was on. I just clicked the icon again and it worked.

And in the level before that I got revived and the tank appeared and killed me pronto. This was right in front of the safe house of course.

A stranger gifted it to me, reaffirming my faith in humanity.

It's fun. The microphone banter is like half of the game. Especially with friends, or when you loosen up with strangers. I don't know, I like being overdramatic.

"Oh God, it's a hunter, get it off me, get it off me!"

My advice is to play the campaigns on expert. Forget "normal", it's ridiculously easy. That also lengthens the time you get to spend playing the game! Yay!

But yeah, expert mode is like a movie. We had some pretty epic moments.

Helps in knowing how to play the game about as much as the Battlefield 2 or TIE Fighter intros do. All are brilliant films, but the only real way to learn the game is to actually play the game.

2. have the helpful pop-up text

Is very handy :goodjob:

3. have friends who won't kill you for being dumb and will in fact even give you pointers.

But if you don't have any friends with Left 4 Dead, then single-player is a good way to get started and learn the basics, right? Then you can quite happily jump into multiplayer games with the knowledge that you're not a complete eejit.

But Kan, the Valve team specifically put introduction movie there to instruct you on the game! (http://l4d.com/blog/post.php?id=2081) D:

Traditional in-game training mechanics didn't make sense for Left 4 Dead, because they would take away from the sense that players had been immediately dropped into a very real, very dire zombie apocalypse. We didn't want a slow ramp-up in gameplay to take away from that tension. As a result, we decided that it would make sense to begin the game experience with a non-interactive introductory movie that could get players revved up and subtly cue them to important gameplay mechanics such as "light disturbs the witch" and "car alarms attract the horde."

I dunno, it worked for me.

Don't get me wrong, Lightfang, playing the game on multiplayer is the only way to play for me, and it's the only way you're going to get the best out of the game. I know, I just wanted to be a polemist. And anyway, I just charged into multiplayer without knowing what I was doing, 'cause I'm that awesome. :p

I was delighted with being macho man because you guys were playing on advanced, and I usually play campaign on expert, so I felt sufficiently good.

But man, for the love of God (this is not directed at you in particular, just at the general L4D population)

1. If I'm crouching there shooting at something, don't run in front of me and make me shoot you. I don't like doing it, and I don't think you like getting shot.
2. Crouch if you're in the front so those of us in the back can shoot over you. And don't randomly stand up either, tell us or wait for the zombies to be eliminated.
3. If I've just been vomited on by a Boomer, don't dance in front of me. I can't really see where you are and I'm shooting semi-randomly, so don't make me hold back against the horde around me because I'm afraid of hitting you.
4. Get a microphone and talk, it's tons more fun that way.
5. Close the doors behind you, it slows zombies down.

Actually I'm just very clumsy. This time I got stuck on the side of the APC and got rushed by zombies. Fighting my way to the rear, the tank came upon me and you know the rest.

An amazing feat of stupidness was last night in the VS. game (farm map). I was at the end of the bridge IN THE SAFE HOUSE, 2 of my mates were dead and only Zoey remained pinned down at the other end of the bridge. As the map wouldn't end until she died or got saved, I decided to go out again to try to kill the tank.

Full health and ammo, what could go wrong ?

Little did I except a smoker from a hundred feet away... :(

Anyway, games with you guys are a lot more fun, I gotta say. The mike action is especially pleasant when I remember to turn the volume up.

Why do I have the sudden urge to get some L4D models lurking in garrysmod.org and have a bunch of TF2 characters fending off L4D zombies, or have Father Gregori the only survivor fending off L4D zombies in Garry's Mod .

Though I was not the only one with that idea (http://garrysmod.com/challenge/show/?id=38&page=1).

There was discussions in various places that Garry may implement L4D mounting in Garry's Mod. Though right now, most of the L4D content are extracted as an addon format (I had to do this with other mods that I just want the content, such as Iron Grip: The Oppression).

The basic controls in FPS games have changed little since DOOM (forward, backwards, strafeing left or right, use mouse to shoot, space to jump, crouching, possibly a running/walking button (which i don't think was in DOOM), reloading, mouse wheel or number keys to select weapons).

IIRC GoW2, Dead Rising (no idea what MoO:WaW is) are third person console shooters, designed specifically (dumbed down) for the console and it's crowd and definately different to L4D.

I have none of the problems you have with my PC version.

I don't know, but probably fine. Left 4 Dead's been pretty optimized.

You can handle TF2, so you can handle L4D.

First game on Advanced, I had the worst and most hilarious round ever.

It shall henceforth be known as the Comedy of Errors, or How NOT to play L4D.

We were playing No Mercy campaign, and in the first level, we did fine. Oh sure, a Witch got scared because we tried to avoid it and couldn't manage it, but nothing too serious.

Sewer level, god dammit. First, a witch was in the tunnel in our direct path, and we couldn't avoid it. We tried walking around it, and it attacked us. Then, when we got to the door part, a Tank came before we could pull the switch and killed two of us, and left me and another person with 40 health. We pulled the switch, and a Smoker got my last comrade. As I tried to save him, I got owned by 50 zombies attacking me, and we had to restart.

Next try, a Boomer owns us back in the Subway. We lose 50% health, all of us in the subsequent attack. We manage to get to the switch part, and then my comrade from last round throws a Molotov and incapitates one of our teammates who had the last pipe bomb... We manage to get through and save him, and we get to the street and survive. Now we're going to the pawn shop, and we hear a witch. We manage to avoid her, but then the horde comes and almost kills us. Then my mouse glitches and shoots the car alarm somehow, and we rush to the safehouse. After the door closes but before the game ends, I shoot Louis's player in the head, by accident. It was hilarious.

Next level = WTF? Tank owns us near the beginning in the shop. We managed to scare the Witch because the player shines a flashlight. We lose all our medpacks and we all have 50 health left. More boomers, more hunters. We manage to get to the safehouse regardless. Then, we get completely owned at the elevator level, first by a random tank which kills us all, then the gets caught by a Smoker and we gotta save him and we all get killed in the process again. Third try was fine, and we got to the elevator.

After that, the final level. First, we get owned by a Boomer and a Hunter which kills us along with the horde of zombies. Next, someone is incaiptated from trying to kill the Witch in our direct path, but we save him. We subsequently get to use the radio, and hide in the closet. God dammit, the player throws a Molotov and kills us in the closet. I shoot him in the spawn and revive him.

Next try, we hide in closet again. Then, Boomer blows up on us. A Smoker captures one of us, and we try to save him. We die in the attempt. Next try, we go onto a rooftop and try to wait it out. Smoker takes me and I get back to roof. Hunter rapes me, because everyone else except one fell down. And that one is the who couldn't get to me. The rest die. We all shoot the again in the spawn.

Final try, we hide in closet. We all get pipe bombs. We hold off hordes, and we kill all the tanks. When the helicopter came, I tried to throw a pipe bomb, and while I was trying to, another Hunter rapes me. At the same time, a Smoker takes Louis's player. He dies, but I survive to throw the pipe bomb. The rest of us get onto the helicopter, including the .

Last stats: Lowest Player Damage:

Me (Bill): 4058.

The only reason to explore is because even the goodies are random---pills, extra medkits, & weapon upgrades.

In Versus mode, it's usually better to push forward, because the score benefits of reaching the end goal are extremely higher. But you also have to consider the meta-strategy of the infected's respawn timer, and also the local tactics of the map section that you're on. And sometimes the auto-shottie is a lifesaver.

Edit: My own question---best way to take down a tank?
My thoughts:
1. Everyone in a wide room with a single entrance, shoot the tank as he enters. Works well.
2. Run out to a clearing with few or no buildings (or few or no high surfaces around). Dance around the tank til it dies. Works ok.
3. Best loadouts are molotovs, hunting rifle or auto-shottie, and lay some gas cans out in the area of approach.

Darth_Pugwash
Feb 20, 2009, 11:50 AM
@Godwin: Generally it's best to move quickly, especially on higher difficulty levels (stick with your team though, don't rush ahead). There is no set number of zombies per level, they are unlimited and spawned randomly by the game/director. I don't think it's possible to meet more than one tank per level, except in the finales, and witches are fairly rare, but other than that they just keep on spawning.

@GoodGame: My general tactic for dealing with tanks (and I think this is the tactic most people fall back on) is to chuck a molo if I have one, then move into the nearest open area while pumping as many rounds into it as possible. The key thing really is to not get spread out, and for everyone to just keep shooting until it goes down.

If you're in tight quarters with the rest of the team, then you definitely should only melee. For example, when we all hide in a closet during a zombie rush, I never use the shotgun. Only melee or pistols.

Shotgun or Uzi?

Assault Rifle or Automatic Shotgun?

EDIT: Thanks D_P

I'd say uzi trumps shotgun vs. horde, but shotgun is better than uzi for personal defense vs. infected. Only thing is I can sometimes shoot a hunter off someone with a uzi before I could bash him off. In Versus, when I want to lead the squad forward fast, I take the uzi.

M16 vs. Auto shottie? I prefer M16 vs. massed horde, though auto shottie is probably better vs. 1 to 3 horde at a time. Mostly it's a matter of range, which is a matter of locale, though anything shottie seems better vs. infected at close range. But if you have good range M16 will o' course keep infected away. And both are a matter of timing/burst control---because it's easy to waste ammo with either.

I'd say don't overlook hunting rifle, because it's pretty good against everything except massed horde at close range. You just have to melee a little more than usual vs. close horde, which is negated by twin pistols. And except for the wide cross hair delay while moving, it's pretty good, getting single shot kills and double kills.. It at least complements the auto shottie and M16 well, 1 per team is a good idea.

Maniacal
Feb 20, 2009, 02:49 PM
The UZI and M16 are best used when aiming at the zombie's head-level, you can easiy mow down an oncoming rush if you know where there head's will be, the shotguns are great for taking out large groups at once.

It comes down to personal preference really, as they are no better or worse than each other (except 1 pistol, uzi and pump shotgun are tier 1 weapons).

Harder difficulties makes the witch startle easierly, but since she more often than not sits in your path at a choke point you can't avoid her.
