Some thoughts on what to post in the UN:

I have, myself, full confidence that if all do their duty, if nothing is neglected, and if the best arrangements are made, as they are being made, we shall prove ourselves once again able to defend our Island home, to ride out the storm of war, and to outlive the menace of conquest, if necessary for years, if necessary alone.

At any rate, that is our goal. That is the resolve of The Council-every man of them. That is the will of Parliament and the nation, from Chamuri's Cove to The Aerie.

The Council will defend to the death our native soil.

Even though large tracts of Meleet's land and many old and famous States have fallen or may fall into the grip of the dreaded Orange and all the odious apparatus of SABER rule, we shall not flag or fail.

We shall go on to the end, we shall fight on BABELand,
we shall fight on the seas and oceans,
we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the air, we shall defend our great land, whatever the cost may be,
we shall fight on the beaches,
we shall fight on the landing grounds,
we shall fight in the fields and in the streets,
we shall fight in the hills;
we shall never surrender, and even if, which I do not for a moment believe, this Island or a large part of it were subjugated and starving, then our lands beyond the seas armed and guarded by the Council Fleet, would carry on the struggle, until, in Meleet's good time, the land of the FREE, with all its power and might, steps forth to the rescue and the liberation of the old."

This is, of course, is taken from the Churchill speech...

Please - any edits/thoughts/ideas - this is kind of a rough draft.

I like it a lot - you really can't go wrong with a master ;)

Is this adapted much? It seems to me it should read 'we shall not flag nor fail'. But if the original lacks the N, the we should leave it out.

Good for a start. :)

If things are going not too good, I will look for a Goebbels' speech of late 1944... :mischief:

I'd have to translate it I guess. But I don't have anything specific in mind yet.

But I know there were quite a lot, still convincing people that the victory is near while Artillery was already pounding the heart of the Reich... :spear:

Still I hope we won't need it... :please:

I might have a look in the evening. I analysed a Goebbel's speech in my exams in school... some 20 years ago... :crazyeye:

I may have dropped something - I just typed "churchill speech" into google, cut and pasted and started changing, so I don't even know that it started out correct.

 I loved Baghdad Bob. Totally classic. Thanks for the trip down memory lane Yilar!

I love the approach AutoTeller. Our other option, of course, is the FDR address to congress after the attack of Pearl Harbor

Yesterday, December 7th, 1941 -- a date which will live in infamy -- the United States of America was suddenly and deliberately attacked by naval and air forces of the Empire of Japan.

The United States was at peace with that nation and, at the solicitation of Japan, was still in conversation with its government and its emperor looking toward the maintenance of peace in the Pacific.

Indeed, one hour after Japanese air squadrons had commenced bombing in the American island of Oahu, the Japanese ambassador to the United States and his colleague delivered to our Secretary of State a formal reply to a recent American message. And while this reply stated that it seemed useless to continue the existing diplomatic negotiations, it contained no threat or hint of war or of armed attack.

It will be recorded that the distance of Hawaii from Japan makes it obvious that the attack was deliberately planned many days or even weeks ago. During the intervening time, the Japanese government has deliberately sought to deceive the United States by false statements and expressions of hope for continued peace.

The attack yesterday on the Hawaiian islands has caused severe damage to American naval and military forces. I regret to tell you that very many American lives have been lost. In addition, American ships have been reported torpedoed on the high seas between San Francisco and Honolulu.

Yesterday, the Japanese government also launched an attack against Malaya.

Last night, Japanese forces attacked Hong Kong.

Last night, Japanese forces attacked Guam.

Last night, Japanese forces attacked the Philippine Islands.

Last night, the Japanese attacked Wake Island.

And this morning, the Japanese attacked Midway Island.

Japan has, therefore, undertaken a surprise offensive extending throughout the Pacific area. The facts of yesterday and today speak for themselves. The people of the United States have already formed their opinions and well understand the implications to the very life and safety of our nation.

As commander in chief of the Army and Navy, I have directed that all measures be taken for our defense. But always will our whole nation remember the character of the onslaught against us.

No matter how long it may take us to overcome this premeditated invasion, the American people in their righteous might will win through to absolute victory.

I believe that I interpret the will of the Congress and of the people when I assert that we will not only defend ourselves to the uttermost, but will make it very certain that this form of treachery shall never again endanger us.

Hostilities exist. There is no blinking at the fact that our people, our territory, and our interests are in grave danger.

With confidence in our armed forces, with the unbounding determination of our people, we will gain the inevitable triumph -- so help us God.

I ask that the Congress declare that since the unprovoked and dastardly attack by Japan on Sunday, December 7th, 1941, a state of war has existed between the United States and the Japanese empire.

With a little editing, you can imagine how well that speech works.
Perhaps this is a better start - then we go with the Churchill one after they land... then with Baghdad Bob if (God forbid) we get down to our last city?

peter grimes

Absolutely, General! Much more appropriate.

Would it be over the top to call them "The Orange Peril?" Or is that so close to racist as to not be funny?

Here is a cut:

Yesterday, November 14th, 1210 AD -- a date which will live in infamy -- The Council was suddenly and deliberately attacked by naval and air forces of the Empire of SABER.

The Council was at peace with that nation and, at the solicitation of SABER, was still in conversation with its government and its emperor looking toward the maintenance of peace in the world of Meleet.

Indeed, one hour after Japanese air squadrons had commenced bombing in the Council's Subcommittee Island, the SABER ambassador to the Council and his colleague delivered to our Chief Diplomat a formal reply to a recent Council message. And while this reply stated that it seemed useless to continue the existing diplomatic negotiations, it contained no threat or hint of war or of armed attack.

It will be recorded that the distance of the Council from SABER makes it obvious that the attack was deliberately planned many days or even years ago. During the intervening time, SABER has deliberately sought to deceive The Council by false statements and expressions of hope for continued peace.

The attack yesterday on the Subcommittee has caused severe damage to American naval and military forces. I regret to tell you that very many American lives have been lost. In addition, American ships have been reported torpedoed, bombed, and sunk on the high seas between BABEColony and The Nursery.

SABER has, therefore, undertaken a surprise offensive extending throughout the world of Meleet area. The facts of yesterday and today speak for themselves. The people of The Council have already formed their opinions and well understand the implications to the very life and safety of our nation.

As current turnplayer of the Army and Navy, I have directed that all measures be taken for our defense. But always will our whole nation remember the character of the onslaught against us.

No matter how long it may take us to overcome this premeditated invasion, the people of The Council in their righteous might will win through to absolute victory.

I believe that I interpret the will of the Counselors and of the people when I assert that we will not only defend ourselves to the uttermost, but will make it very certain that this form of treachery shall never again endanger us.

Hostilities exist. There is no blinking at the fact that our people, our territory, and our interests are in grave danger.

With confidence in our armed forces, with the unbounding determination of our people, we will gain the inevitable triumph -- so help us God.

I ask that the Counselors declare that since the unprovoked and dastardly attack by SABER on Friday, November 14th, 1210 AD, a state of war has existed between the Council and the SABER empire.

I dunno – it took me a moment to even understand how "Orange peril" could be racist… but once I got it – I see your point.
I think someone would have to be pretty sensitive to have that bother them, but probably best to avoid it. It's not really necessary anyway.

You missed a few "Japans" and "Americas" :)

Actually, I thought the stray America and Japan references were key to understanding - that this is not just pulled out of thin air but precisely the same thing as a Pearl Harbor.

I'm in favor of leaving them in.

But, I'm also in favor of me attempting to record a Radio Address, and uploading the sound file. I talked to a friend of mine who does that sort of thing for reals, and he told me how to do a ghetto (is that going to offend anyone? :shakeshead:) imitation of FDR's radio address. If I don't have a file posted here within 26 hours, then I won't get to it and we should proceed with the traditional propaganda outlets. :salute:

[I'll do a recording of both texts, and our Propaganda Subcommittee can choose ;)]

EDIT: For the record, I don't see any problem with Orange Peril. It's not racist. It's antecedent was perhaps racist, but I think everyone here understands that this is in a game, not reality. In the sense of satire, it's fine to let it stand.

Great stuff so far guys. I'm just gonna sit back and enjoy this thread. I gotta ask about the poster with the bombers though. "For Freedom"? Is that a pun or some sort? Maybe just make the FREE capitalized. When SABER looks at it they'll get that subliminal message that this attack of theirs will lead to FREE's victory.

AutomatedTeller

A radio address would be GREAT, peter!!

Very cool indeed!!

peter grimes
Nov 17, 2008, 08:46 PM
OK, I finally managed to grab an audio clip of FDR's actual radio address. It occurs to me that it might be funniest if I simply 'paste' my own voice saying THE COUNCIL, or THE SABER MENACE where appropriate :dunno:

It's about 5 mintues long, which I recognize is not ideal. Likely there's a bit that we can discard for the sake of expediency (God, that's just terrible, isn't it?? :old:)

For anyone who's interested, here's the source (http://www.americanrhetoric.com/speeches/fdrpearlharbor.htm). I like it especially since it's got that whole bit of introduction, plus the applause.

On the other hand, it will be much simpler for me to execute if I can figure out how to blend a static radio crackle with my own voice reading the speeches that have been modified by my honorable Councilmates. But as of yet, I haven't figured out the 'crackle' bit - and I think that's kind of important to make it sound all radio-y. :cringe:

Obviously, if I can't get this done by the time we're sending off the save, then we should just send off one of the above speeches (with FREEdom posters (and Amero-Japanese references, if you ask me ;))). And likewise, even if I DO get this done in time, that's no guarantee that it will be worth publishing

At least if we go down, we're going to have fun doing it! :suicide:

I know the Mp4 is a problem for me. I can get around it - but it's kind of a process. I think you'll have better luck if you stick with Mp3.

Peter's audio inspired me to make this short video.
I found a website with mp3 audio from the great speeches of WWII - and I cut out the best parts and set them to some propaganda posters.

It's kind of a quick and dirty effort - but I hope you all get a kick out of it :)

But let me take one more stab at it.
