View Full Version : An illustrated Christmas tale

Once upon a time in the Christmas Faerie Country, SANdrisTa Claus was very happy. The little CFCers have been very nice, and he was ready to send them a lot of new units to play with for Christmas.

But the little elven helpers were worried. With all this new toys that SANdrisTa Claus was willing to prepare, the Elves were afraid they won't be able to fit them all easily in the gift wrapping (you know, the one written B I Q all over it).

So they went to see Steph the elder Elve, and ask him for help.

And he said "don't worry, here is how you shall do it".

First you need to start clean. And Steph took the big eraser tool, and he deleted all the units at once.

Then, he said "you need some models to start working with. Let's add some"

http://img399.imageshack.us/img399/2738/story2mt3.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

"I think 3 models should be enough for the moment".

http://img522.imageshack.us/img522/7261/story3nf9.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

"Ah, we have the models, we now need to paint them". And so the little elves took their paint brushes, and painted the models with new names, attack strength, flags, etc.

When they were finsihed, Steph the elder Elve said, now we want to use these templates to create more toys, for different time period.

http://img399.imageshack.us/img399/4196/story5ij8.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

So the little CFCer who wants to play in the Bronze age can, as well as the little CFCers who wants to play in the Iron age, and the same for the medieval times.

Ah! With one little click, we get nice variation for each period, nicely organized into unit lines. The little elven helpers just have to check each new toy one by one, change the required advance, and adjust the strength.

http://img399.imageshack.us/img399/2719/story7tp6.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

And now, we want to customize our toys so each little CFCers from around the world can have his own national version! Let's make Italian, Greeks and French toys!
But this time, we'll group them by country, instead of grouping them by unit line.

Et voilą! All the toys were almost ready, the little elven helpers just had to do some polishing, before they can be sent to the little CFCers.

Steph: This will be the best Christmas present EVER! Having an editor like that would cut the time required to finish rounding out the FF mod in half (after I figure out a work-around for the "airship problem" that is).

That is this problem?

That is this problem?

Nothing that you could fix easily using the editor.... Basically I want to limit the number of Airships civs can build (easy using resources on pre-placed maps, but difficult for random map mods).... The only way I can think of to do that (so you don't have ginormous combat airship fleets pwning everything) is to have them tied to buildings.... I.e. you start out with a SW called an "Airship factory" that produces an airship every X turns, then for the "upgrades", the tech that allows the next "Airship Factory" renders the SW obsolete, and the new "airship factory" has to be built in the same city that the original SW was built.

The problem in implementation is that while in the original version, everyone could build the same initial airship (meaning that I can make everyone be able to build the SW with no problems), however, starting with the first upgrade, two of the civs had unique Steam airships, and many of the civs have unique modern airships.

The problem I'm trying to work out is how I can have the UU airships tied to a building that can only be built by the civs that can build said UU airships, but still have all the civs that DON'T have UU airships to build one building that produces the "standard" modern airships... The reason this is somewhat problematic is that I dislike "cheating" to have a bunch of buildings and/or techs with the same name, not to mention I'm nearing the building limit for the mod.....

Like I said, I'll figure it out, but one of the easiest to implement solutions, namely to give ALL the civs the same steam airships and move the two UU steam airships up to the Modern age, and then instead of the UU airships being truly unique, they'd be tied to a particular game in the series, which, of course pops up additional problems, namely coming up with another UU to replace the airship as the third UU for that faction (since their airship is no longer unique).....
