View Full Version : Islam Missionaries
PrivateThomas Dec 08, 2008, 03:30 AM In my current game, i just discovered and founded islamism
I would like to mass produce some missionaries but
after 3 or so, i can't produce anyfor some time. Why is that ?
zombiestomp Dec 08, 2008, 03:38 AM like national wonders, there are limits to how many missionaries you can maintain at a time. this isn't affected by game speed or difficulty.
carl corey Dec 08, 2008, 03:39 AM You can have at most 3 missionaries at a time, including the ones in the queues of your cities. Doesn't matter which religion they have. 3 missionaries per religion. Once you use one it frees up a slot and you can build one more.
zombiestomp Dec 08, 2008, 03:41 AM once you use those missionaries attempting to spread your religion, you will be able to build more. you can have a maximum of three from each religion, so if you have two religions in your empire you can have six missionaries, three from each.
vanatteveldt Dec 08, 2008, 08:44 AM Why would missionaries be limited to 3?
Isn't it strange that this limit is independent of map size?
Bleys Dec 08, 2008, 10:25 AM Something to remember, if you use one of the live missionaries that turn, you can then put a new one into a queue somewhere.

1. Game balance to prevent easy flooding of mass missionaries.
2. Yes, it's pretty awkward. It should definitely scale.
vanatteveldt Dec 08, 2008, 11:35 AM Why is mass flooding missionaries significantly different from mass flooding tanks?
OT: What I would really like is if somehow existing religions could change or dissapear, eg define a religion as a 'branch' of another religion (think protestantism - catholicism, or with a stretch christianity and islam - judaism), taking over a percentage of the existing faithful; or just having a chance of flipping or removing religions... I hate it that 90% of games one or two early religions capture the world and the rest doesn't matter..

I think the later religions have a larger chance of spreading, but in the vast majority of games, I'd say at least 60% of the world ends up in one of the early 3 religions.
TheMeInTeam Dec 08, 2008, 01:08 PM Missionaries are pretty cheap in :hammers:. More importantly, if you could build unlimited missionaries, AP abuse would reach new levels, and so would diplo control.
Arguably, the game would be more dynamic that way though, and civics like theocracy (if properly implemented like in unofficial patches where the AI won't accept gifted missionaries while in that civic for example ) might be more useful than already.
I think it's also a crutch for the AI though, similar to the corp limit of 5 execs. IIRC, the AI was having issues with these by SPAMMING them and then NOT USING them, which kind of screws it. Could you imagine gandhi with 80 hindu missionaries? He'd be even LESS able to defend himself. AIs like izzy/sury/zara/justinian would be pretty hosed too.

Very true. Back in the days of v3.13 and no limit on executives, I ran into a fabled "stack of two dozen createcon executives" sitting in a city I was conquering. Now I'm sure he would have been better off putting those hammers into actual units instead. :p
