As an exercise to improve my city specialization, I'm thinking of playing a game where each city is only allowed to build stuff that is consistent with its purpose/specialization.

The feedback being solicited:
a. general merit of the idea (e.g. great idea deckhand, tremendous first post) :king:
b. recommend leader/civilization - I don't want it to be too easy (so financial is out?) nor too hard (no protectionism??)
c. the Rules
d. map type and size
e. victory condition

I generally play noble or prince and will do this one at noble, and epic speed.

Possible rules:

all cities can build general buildings
general buildings are granary and happiness buildings
wonder city can only build wonders
finance city can only build improvements that increase $
science city can only build improvements that increase bulbs
military city can only build military units
GP farm can ??
espionage city can only build improvements that increase espionage
no specialists that don't match city specialization
etc

Ideas solicited. THANKS

General buildings: granary, courthouse, forge, later factory and power (suppose happy/health buildings strictly as nessecary)

I don't think there are any other buildings that pretty much belong in every city.

a) In my opinion all Role Play Challenges are welcome!

b) Try one of the Indians or Russina depending on your game flavor

c,d, e) Up to you, your game!

When I played this with Fred I found it's best to focus one city on certain buildings but do not cut off others. For example, a gold city should build markets/grocers/banks ASAP but can fillin otehrs as needed.

You may want to get a founded shrine for a money city (I missed out on that)

designate specialists to the specialized cities, merchants to the gold city, scientists to the science city, spies to the espionage city etc....

Most important thing, have fun!

wonder city can only build wonders

What happens when there are no wonders to build?

I'm on board. As for:

c. the Rules
e. victory condition

I think the rules should be:

1) Get one of each type of city you desire up before you decide on a victory condition;

but

2) Select a VC before a certain date (1 A.D?) and then head toward it with guns blazing (or culture thriving, etc.)

Gold and units, because really it's just a glorified hammer city. Usually the latter, by the way.
