DVS Dec 18, 2008, 02:22 AM Ok, I'll use this post to keep just a list of every unit we want to include. From here, we'll have to search around for existing art that we can use, and then build the ones we can't find. I'll use this post as a checklist.
I assume most of the existing units that we'll end up using will be drawn from Max Riga's Mod (http://maxriga.civfanatics.ru/Units.htm) and Modern Warfare Mod. (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=192679) Needless to say we will credit everyone who created something that we end up including. Snafusmith (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=210314) has made a lot of the modern units already.
Please post if you find units that we don't have yet, or if you think you've found a better version of one that we do. One thing that I think we should insure is that every unit we use is animated.
Rebel/Failed State Units
I seem to have lost the list of rebel units we had way back when. Hopefully someone has it or can remember the ones I'm forgetting. Or we can just name all the ones we want now and redo it.

Everyone please feel free to pitch in and add to this. I will updated this master list as we find them.
DVS Dec 21, 2008, 06:08 PM sheep 21, please bump this thread when you update so we can tell! I missed the new additions until now.
props friend... all your work here will pay off when the game is supremely realistic!
DVS Dec 21, 2008, 06:39 PM Ok, I guess we are going to have to crunch this data a few different ways, so I'll get started.
I suppose first we'll need a clean list of just the units, to make it easier for those adding them. I'll make that now and put it in my first post up there ^^.
The only thing missing now are the naval units right? I assume that is what you have post #2 reserved for. :-)
After everything is here, it would certainly be helpful to the map builder who adds the units if we could get it sorted by civ. This includes not just the civs we are including, but basically every country, because those countries in the minor nations/failed states are still going to have to have accurate militaries in the proper cities. The other unions as well.
That's going to be task in itself, so if anyone wants to start on that (once naval units are here), that would be sweet. For those of you who take this on, it would be ideal to have the unions organized together, but still separated by country. :D
Mattygerst Dec 21, 2008, 09:17 PM Question/comment:
I've played many mods where there are "unit specific" to a certain country...yet you can still build them as other countries. For example: The Panzer tank in WWII was, I believe, a German-specific tank...so it should only be able to be built by the Germans (yes, I know that unit is in the past...just using it as an example). Just making sure that we are going to keep country-specific units only build-able in those countries.

hey bud
Let's continue this discussion here (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?p=7575015#post7575015).
DVS Dec 21, 2008, 11:44 PM Another thing- we can't really include air transport units unless we can get the AI to use them. They are very cool, I've used them in maxriga. But the AI doesn't use them at all as far as I can tell, no matter how many they have or how badly they need to use them. So unless someone can come up with a fix for this, which is unlikely, we have to leave them out. :(
sheep21 Dec 22, 2008, 08:00 AM will get on with Naval forces tonight, going to be a long night methinks...
With regard to air transports. they are critical to resuply and troop movements over longer distances quickly. perhaps rationalise it for the time being to a medium and long range lift aircraft, that way the human can still use it
sheep21 Dec 22, 2008, 09:56 AM Nuclear sub classes are up
sheep21 Jan 07, 2009, 12:58 PM destroyers and cruisers are up and finished
sheep21 Jan 08, 2009, 10:01 PM Frigates are UP! over to you DVS ;)
DVS Jan 08, 2009, 10:02 PM Fantastic bro. I will add the needed units to the art thread tomorrow, and start figuring out which ones already exist, and which ones we need.
sheep21 Jan 08, 2009, 10:04 PM good luck, your gonna need it!
DVS Jan 08, 2009, 11:43 PM damn you're right... that's a lot of units. Well, time to dive in. Obviously the vast majority of these are going to start with placeholder art.
I agree with your prognosis regarding units under construction. For the sake of simplicity and consistency, let's chalk up all under construction units as existing units.
DVS Jan 08, 2009, 11:49 PM Also units that are in development but not production (eg: Barracuda class sub), I think we should probably add new techs as you suggested.
We'll get a list together and then figure out how to add them.

We're going to have to trim this down a bit a think. Are all of these frigates really that different? Or can we merge a bunch of them together?
sheep21 Jan 09, 2009, 12:09 AM some can be merged aye
im thinking some do look quite smiliar so one art can cover afew ships.
problem with FF's is, every bloody bugger can build one cos they can be pretty dammned low tech, hence the proliferation of ships of 2-5 ships in a class
DVS Jan 09, 2009, 12:31 AM I mean even more than art though man. I mean totally merging, leaving some of the frigates out and replacing those with ones we do include. If that makes sense.
Sub and destroyers I think are fine, we can include all those.
But there are like over 40 frigates there, do we need that many is my question.
sheep21 Jan 09, 2009, 12:34 AM i imagine some can be combined quite easily
will have a go on the weekend
DVS Jan 09, 2009, 12:50 AM ok I will focus on getting subs and destroyers in the mod until then.
sheep21 Jan 12, 2009, 11:40 PM no longer needed
DVS Jan 13, 2009, 01:33 AM That is great pal, thanks for doing that. So I guess we are almost done here? Missing only transports and carriers?
If I may, perhaps we can just go with a headcount of transports, rather than getting specific. Or maybe have two kinds of transport, an older one an a modern one. Anyway just a suggestion, I will bow to your wisdom sheep.
DVS Jan 13, 2009, 06:37 AM What did I do wrong to come up with 45 here?

sheep21 Jan 13, 2009, 07:55 AM nothing, the ones I combined originaly counted up to 33, they now add up to 15-20 of the current total. Before there were over 65 :p
I'll have another crack at it tonight mate.
DVS Jan 13, 2009, 08:11 AM you lost me
sorry I think I've been staring at xml code for too long
sheep21 Jan 13, 2009, 08:16 AM lol
the list was oriningall 65 or so ships long. after cutting that down we now arrive at the number 45 after I have combined a number of classes. More sense?
DVS Jan 13, 2009, 08:22 AM ok I get it. Yeah we still need to cut it down unfortunately. With our merges and leaderheads and everything we're approaching 700 megs already here and we still have all the units and unique buildings to add. :help:
Although that will come down a lot when we pack our graphics. I hope.
sheep21 Jan 13, 2009, 08:28 AM ya doing well dude.

DVS Jan 13, 2009, 10:28 AM how many did you cut down? things may have to get somewhat skewed frigate wise I'm afraid. :(
I'm not saying you have to keep figuring this out now, just that we may not be able to get all these in.
sheep21 Jan 13, 2009, 10:35 AM thats 42 total we have now. less than the total number of civs were creating. can you log onto Yahoo?

Right, I have used a crowbar and alot of brute force and managed to squeeze this down to 33 ship classes, considering we started with 65 I think thats a minor miracle! Really, this is as low as it gets before we have major distortions from reality and lose the realistic look we were going for.

MasterOfDomain Jan 15, 2009, 02:58 PM This may be a bit late in the game and all, but: why do we need country-specific ships, no less frigates? Are they dramatically different? Wouldn't it be better to add different categories of ships, or apply weapons to them and make those into different classes.
DVS Jan 15, 2009, 03:52 PM They are very different. We are trying to get every military as accurate as possible. Giving everyone the same frigates would not be realistic, plus it's boring.
sheep21 Jan 15, 2009, 03:53 PM different ships built to different standards, different designs, different missions, different lifespans, different technology. There are vast differences between, say an Indian 1970's frigate of UK design to a Japanese ship constructed in 2007.
Also, frigates are the workhorses of most modern navies, there importance in modern naval operations and warfare merit there inclusion like this.

DVS Jan 17, 2009, 08:59 AM Great stuff, all added to the unit art thread.
I guess all that is left are the APCs, which I believe Mattygerst is presently working on. Then all we need is a count of transports (not doing unique transports for now), and we're done with unit research! Is that possible?
sheep21 Jan 19, 2009, 12:30 PM Amphibious Assualt Ships
Landing ship dock
A Dock landing ship or Landing ship (Dock) (hull classification LSD) is a form of auxiliary warship designed to support amphibious operations. These amphibious assault ships transport and launch amphibious craft and vehicles with their crews and embarked personnel. In the US Navy, two classes are in service, the Whidbey Island and Harpers Ferry classes, mainly used to carry Landing Craft Air Cushions (LCACs), as well as carrying marines. The Royal Navy also operates four ships of the Bay class.

Landing platform dock
An amphibious transport dock (also called a landing platform dock or LPD) is an amphibious warfare ship, a warship that embarks, transports, and lands elements of a landing force for expeditionary warfare missions. Several navies currently operate this kind of ship. The ships are generally designed to transport troops into a war zone by sea, primarily using landing craft, although invariably they also have the capability to operate transport helicopters.
Amphibious transport docks perform the mission of amphibious transports, amphibious cargo ships, and the older LPDs by incorporating both a flight deck and a well deck that can be ballasted and deballasted to support landing craft or amphibious vehicles.

It was about research for the transport/armor units.

Arlborn Feb 17, 2009, 12:05 AM I know I may not have much of a business around here, not being of the team and all, but I am just curious, how did you guys get those list? Because if I check, for example, the Navy and Air Force page of Brazil, I see there is quite different numbers of somethings there, as well as many things not documented up here. You can check in English the wiki, which seems accurate enough if I compare with the Brazilian sources I gave a read: Air Force (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brazilian_Air_Force) - Navy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brazilian_navy). ( list of ships (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ships_of_the_Brazilian_Navy) - list of Air Units only from the Navy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_aircraft_of_the_Brazilian_Navy))
See it? There are specific numbers of each models we have there. And also, we are supposed to have the biggest Navy in South America...
I am only talking about Brazil as an example because I could read the official Brazilian Navy and Air Force websites and know what I just talked about. That is why I am curious, did you guys check each country one by one, or..?
Now, feel free to ignore me though, I am not part of the team, I am just curious.
sheep21 Feb 17, 2009, 12:24 AM the lists were compiled from the english wiki aswell as the global security website. I refrained from using Ministry of Defence websites as usually they are a.) in a foreign language and b.) dont always contain the numbers. I did this by going through country by country and class by class
Hope that answers your question :)
