View Full Version : MMORPG Survey: Gamers Wanted
Conani Dec 21, 2008, 12:54 PM Hi,
Firstly I've been browsing through the forum and didn’t see anything wrong with posting this, if there is then remove it moderators!
I'm currently gathering data for my thesis. I’m using an online survey to explore MMORPGs. If anyone has any free time could you please fill it in? It's confidential and it’s exploring MMORPG playing behavior and motivations.
I want as many participants as possible. So your participation would be greatly appreciated.
The link below provides you with more details about my project;

Sorry for the shameless plug,
Thank you for your time.
Synsensa Dec 21, 2008, 07:49 PM I would help but I don't play MMORPGs anymore.
azzaman333 Dec 22, 2008, 04:36 AM Probably won't get many responses from here.

Maniacal Dec 22, 2008, 10:17 PM Mark down 1 for MMORPGs suck.
Conani Dec 23, 2008, 08:02 AM Hi,
First of all, I want to apologise for double-posting the other day. Sorry moderators and members of the forum.
Can someone tell me why I won't get many responses in this forum?
A gamer once took part in one of my previous projects, he said he found Civilisation addictive. So I thought MMORPG gamers may play more than one game. What type of genre is Civilisation?
Sarcasticon Dec 23, 2008, 09:48 AM Civilization is a strategy game, which is different from RPG's. Of course there will be plenty of people who play both but you may have more luck posting this on a forum dedicated to RPG's, more chances of finding MMORPG players there who can take your survey.

RPG =/= MMORPG
(=/= means 'does not equal')

All MMORPGs are RPGs, but not all RPGs are MMORPGs.
And not all MMOs are MMORPGs.
Both Civilization and most MMORPGs are very time-consuming, so it'd be difficult to play both.

I fail to see much roleplaying in MMOs that consist of power gamnig grindfests and general crap.

I don't play MMORPGs, but I'm sure the mechanics in most would allow roleplaying.
Maniacal Dec 23, 2008, 08:12 PM *shrugs*
I still don't count mmorgps as RPGs.
Izipo Dec 24, 2008, 08:25 AM I'm with Princescamp here.

Yes but no one actually roleplays in MMOs. You won't find any lawful righteous Paladins, just some kids who think Paladins have "omg 1337 skillz". And if you DO find someone roleplaying it's always just some Orc yelling "grr stinking humans! me so angry!"
So in practice MMORPGs aren't RPGs, they're online popularity contests with kids showing off their +9 Epic Magical Shining Enchanted ePenises
Yui108 Dec 24, 2008, 10:49 AM responded, man it was loong.

I've seen some half-decent role-playing in Lord of the Rings Online, but that's mostly limited to players talking to each other. It is a bit of a shame that most of the time it's just players running around trying to advance levels and items as quickly as possible.
I don't have much experience of MMO's outside of that though.

I think that applies to most things online, especially gaming :)
My bow in LotrO has badass looking spikes coming out of it, by the way

You've chosen the wrong forum mate.
Players on this forum are normally strategic-type driven players that love complicated and well thought-out turn based empire-building games. That of course doesn't rule out us loving the ocasional FPS or some other game including RPG (Mass Effect or FO3).
But I really think you won't find much hard nosed MMROPGS's gamers here.
Conani Dec 26, 2008, 06:07 AM Great, Civ looks like a awesome game. Is it addictive? So nobody here likes MMORPGs?
King of Town Dec 26, 2008, 11:29 AM That seems to be the common opinion
Maniacal Dec 26, 2008, 02:16 PM Well, no, there ARE mmorpg players, just they are massively outnumbered. You really should give the civilizatino series a try, and even though I do despise mmorpgs you should play what is fun for you.

I agree, I've seen many people with so-called 'Shining Enchanted ePenises'. But that's one of the attraction of the game. However, MMO can be as sophisticated as turn-based games.
How much does it cost to play Civ? Where do I get more info.
Maniacal Dec 28, 2008, 01:28 PM Er, Civ is not an mmo, it does have multiplayer. The cost is from $5-$60 (canadian, it can change depending on currency, sales, where you buy it, which civ game you buy, ets).
Civ4 is only $29 on Amazon.
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000BC38K6/ref=nosim/civilizationfana
But there is also Civ2 and Civ3 that people still play, and even though I own all of them (except the Civ4 expansions), I've played Civ2 the most.
Conani Dec 30, 2008, 10:09 AM Thanks for the info Prince. I noticed that your'e from Vancouver. According to a survey of best places to live, Vancouver came top. What's it really like to live in Vancouver?

No idea as I live on Vancouver Island, not Vancouver the city, I live about half-way up near Courtenay/Comox.

Vancouver is nicer than most cities, and certainly within reach of the beautiful places of BC. I myself don't like cities, nasty ugly smelly dirty things with large infestations of humans. Still, I'd rather live in Vancouver than most cities, such as London, Malaga, Barcelona and probably many others which I havn't been too.
Conani Jan 02, 2009, 05:24 AM I know what you mean. I've heard that Canadians and Americans don't like each other, why is this?
How far to you live from Toronto? Has it snowed where you live?

You need a date with a world map my friend, or better yet, maybe the wikipedia article on Canada :p I'll shoot you a PM though.
Newbunkle Jan 07, 2009, 04:25 PM I haven't played MMORPG's since my City of Heroes account expired. The only other one I've played is Eve, but its so boring. Its like Excel in space.
Oruc Jan 07, 2009, 04:28 PM City of Heroes and Guild Wars are the best ones I've played.

I never got to try out Guild Wars, but its by the same company isn't it? I know they did Tabula Rasa, but that's being withdrawn. They also have a new one coming out called Aion or something.
My main toon in CoH was called Numbnuts. He was an Ice/Ice blaster, and I think he got to level 42 before my sub expired.
Conani Jan 08, 2009, 11:22 AM I need a name for my project/thesis. I was thinking of calling it the "MMOPROJECT". But I think it's too basic. I need something appealing like the "The Daedalus Project"!
Can anyone think of a good name for my MMORPG Project? Something different and new which stands out. Please post on here or email me your ideas at zaheer.hussain@ntu.ac.uk
Thanks in advance.

They were published by the same publisher, ncsoft. Tabula Rasa was ok, Aion meh.
Honestly I don't remember my main toon was called but it was a Stalker, I also had a guy called Gods Crusader another Villain :p.
Character creation in other MMO's is always a let down like 6 heads, scars, tatoos and hair colour to customise

Deus Vult! thats a good name
Maniacal Jan 08, 2009, 01:19 PM Deus Vult has been used on a game that is significantly better than any mmo currently out.

Actually it was used during a crusade better then any game currently out, Also he was talking about the name of his thesis. Shouldn't present your opinion as fact by the way
