View Full Version : Sub-Forum?
Duke of Marlbrough Aug 22, 2002, 12:29 AM Would we want a sub-forum for the Democracy Game?
We could put all the sticky threads that just sit there in it.
So, do we need/want one?
What should it be called?
What threads should be in it?
duke o' york Aug 22, 2002, 02:15 AM I'm not in favour of as many sub forums as the Civ 3 game has, but I reckon that just one would be fine. We shouldn't put the sticky threads in there, as they should be kept on the main page. Rather, we should call it the history sub forum and use it to store all of the closed threads that we have since moved on from. It would be a read-only forum basically. We can put the election results in there, and all of the exploration threads not relevant to our current situation. If we keep the closed sticky threads that deal with the game settings in this forum and then put all of the other closed threads in there then that should be a good way to operate. We could just leave them there in the order they are currently in so that they are almost chronological and anyone interested in the history of the NUF can start at the beginning and then catch up with what we are doing quickly. :goodjob:
ainwood Aug 22, 2002, 02:44 AM I think its a good idea. :goodjob:
I would be in favour of having all the "current" issues (current turn threads / polls etc) in one place, uncluttered by all the historical stuff.
If that is best achieved by sticking all the historical stuff in a sub-forum, I'm all for it.
As an example though, I initially missed this thread because it was hidden under a plethora of (empty) sticky threads.
Dell19 Aug 22, 2002, 02:44 AM Sounds like a good idea, Duke :)
GaryNemo Aug 22, 2002, 05:30 AM I like to keep everything in one directory, so I can easiliy see what is changed. Likewise, lets keep one forum. But it seems to me we might have too many "Sticky" threads. I'm not sure which to combine, maybe Wonders Govt & Current Science. Definitely keep Constitution, it's required reading for anyone coming in here.
Generally, the date sort seems to take care of it for me.
Daaraa Aug 22, 2002, 08:28 AM A sub forum is a good idea. :)
I would agree with everyone else to put all non-used and locked threads into a sub-forum leaving all current threads in the main one.
I would also hope that we not have as many sub-forums as the Civ 3 demo game as it leads to clutter.
duke o' york Aug 22, 2002, 08:41 AM I don't want to knock your game but in the Civ 3 Demo game I had trouble finding where the actual game turns were in all of the forums. I agree that it is too cluttered and this tends to dissuade lurkers and newbs like myself. :(

I too was unable to locate the actual turn-threads in the Civ3 demo game. It was such a shame because I would have liked to follow that game.
Anyway, a subforum to keep the closed turn threads would be a nice idea to keep track of history.
Octavian X Aug 22, 2002, 03:15 PM You should've looked in the Government subforum, under the turn chat threads. We use a chat room to play about 10 turns at a time. We are planning, though, to move all of them to the main forum in the new game.
I'd be in favor of subforums for things dealing with the government, with the turn threads, departmental, and provincial instructions in it. The main one could be used for discussions and polls.
Zwelgje Aug 22, 2002, 03:37 PM Thanks! I've found it.
Even some nice looking screenshots. I'll have a look at work someday those big pics don't load very quickly on my computer.
Duke of Marlbrough Aug 22, 2002, 08:57 PM The other idea is to make a summary thread for all the sticky items. In that one thread it will have links to all the other threads. That way we would only have one 'unused' sticky thread.
starlifter Aug 22, 2002, 09:02 PM I'm not sure what the Civ 3 Demo game looks like (but I followed a link to one of their threads once), but if the main & active threads could be the ones visible, that would likely help some people.
Personally, I do a double check... the date sort at the top, and the date sort at the end of the Stickies.
Duke of Marlbrough Aug 22, 2002, 11:36 PM Check this out (http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=30421) and let me know what you think.
I agree that the forum is too cluttered.....
I have now made it have only 5 sticky threads.
Give me an idea of how you like how the forum is now....
starlifter Aug 23, 2002, 12:56 AM Hey, that's a good idea, Duke! The thread looks good, and the forum has less to wade thru at the top. :)
duke o' york Aug 23, 2002, 01:38 AM This is going to be a dumb question, but where did they all go? Did you just unsticky them and they've disappeared down the forum in the order they were created?
This is a good solution and we don't need an extra forum for it. :goodjob:
Octavian X Aug 23, 2002, 02:19 AM Yup, thats what happens. When a thread is unstickied, it moves where is would be if it wasn't originally stickied. Everything that was there is now probably on the second page of the forum.
Zwelgje Aug 23, 2002, 03:59 AM Well done Duke!
This is much more convenient than 10 sticky threads up there.
Dell19 Aug 23, 2002, 04:11 AM Yep its a great idea and really reduces the need for a sub forum. :)
GaryNemo Aug 23, 2002, 03:27 PM I like it too, and if someone updates one of those Game Information threads, it will float naturely back to the top I guess. Looks great, all in one thread, with a sticky bookmark.
Tesla Tank Aug 23, 2002, 04:10 PM Good idea Duke!
One mistake tho, the current science link to the game setting.

Damn, you mean someone actually checked them? It's fixed now. :)
The only problem being is that when they are updated, there will be no real way of knowing for the most part.
When I change them, I edit the thread, not make a new post, so they won't come back up to the top. I guess I could actually make a new post and then delete the old one.....
GaryNemo Aug 24, 2002, 10:09 AM Sure, just post new new report, at least for a few times. Actually, anyone could make a new post, right? Such as our Consulate, Department of Science?
This could eliminate your need to make threads sticky and unsticky, perhaps helping you with your other lives...
I already love this new system! There a fewer sticky threads.
Department heads, Citizens, any comments?
Chieftess Aug 30, 2002, 06:50 PM You could always use indices... (plural) Seems to be very popular on the fora lately. ;)
