i just got civ colonization and i got it installed and started up then it was loading and when it said init engine it messed up what do i do?

You should ensure you have the latest version of DirectX from www.microsoft.com/directx

dale i tried to download the directx you suggested but it didnt do nything different what do you think i should do

It could be an issue with your graphics card. Do you have an old graphics card? Or an embedded graphics card in an old motherboard? Because Col has higher graphic requirement than Civ4 (the newer version of shader technology is used in Col).

That is what worked for me. I had the same issue when I was trying to install and a quick update of graphics card driver fixed it. :goodjob:
