Danke Aug 23, 2002, 03:34 PM First order of business: cities. Is say yes, let's found one. I would also suggest to whoever our first President is, that the name of our first city and capital represent both the aspirations of our fledgling nation, and a sense of presence as a livable place where we can build great structures, beautiful neighborhoods, and successful businesses.
disorganizer Aug 23, 2002, 03:52 PM I will join! One point to push forward or discuss here would propably be to have the powers of mayors increased... But everything increasing roleplay would be fine!
I second your proposal, great leader. We already have pubs, businesses and a bank. At the moment, all is chaotic. We should settle and have a fence around our land to prevent those evil neighbors to steal our apples.
Also, we should maybe except the president foundign our nation have some local administration, like a citizen being in front of the city. I would call him "mayor", as he has a major role in the domestic representation.
But i also think we should enhance planning to the future. This "mayor" will not be able to controll all if we get more cities maybe. So we would propably also need someone governing all cities. a "governor".
FunnyInTheDark Aug 23, 2002, 06:01 PM I'll join
Danke Aug 23, 2002, 06:58 PM Welcome Disorganizer and FunnyInTheDark!
Dis, I agree, and these concepts of "mayor" (funny word, that) and "governor" seem just the thing as we envision having more than one focal point for our urban life.
Maybe our businesses could all gather together in one place, perhaps in the shape of a square, with the area in between commonly held, so that it would be easy to go from shop to shop. I think this "square" would be a nice place to gather as well, to discuss our ideas.
Perhaps we could prevail on the Rebel Bar to put some tables out in the "square" and we could relax with smoked banana juice and discuss how to forge our new nation.
I propose that we call this area "Fanatika Square" and that it be the center of our yet-to-be city.
FunnyInTheDark Aug 23, 2002, 07:06 PM It all sounds good to me....I really don't have a preference...but yes. It does seem like a good idea to have a "Business/Developemental/Progressive" Square or District within the city...of course...it would have to follow the eras. I mean, it won't be a formalized "Business District" until the modern times..but still...during the Middle Ages we could call it a Bazaar, Market, etc. ???
Danke Aug 23, 2002, 07:36 PM It just struck me while reading FITD's post that "putting the cart before the horse" takes on a whole new meaning at this stage of the game.
FITD, my subtle hidden agenda (now cleverly unmasked) is to create a series of mental spaces that will help us to envision a functional geography of our new nation. I expect Fanatika Square to become the seat of government or our central business district, to be re-named after a great victory, or be the venue for great political rallies or celebrations.
But we must start somewhere.
FunnyInTheDark Aug 23, 2002, 07:38 PM well then more power to the wonder of profit {stuffs pockets with lots of cash soon to appear in the national budget and runs for the border} ahhhh..if only LOL d;o)

Almightyjosh Aug 25, 2002, 02:25 AM Sounds like fun! I like the idea of designated areas and the like. Now i we only had someone here with a background in statistical geography....

Almightyjosh Aug 25, 2002, 07:23 AM I've just had a brilliant idea!!

Almightyjosh Aug 25, 2002, 07:25 AM
There is never quite the right place to comment on these things, but, Zarn, that is one of the funniest sigs I have seen yet.

Danke Aug 26, 2002, 07:12 AM Welcome Zarn!
I like Almightyjosh's idea of multiple centers of civilization, however one would be a nice start!
Fanatika Square progress: The 'common' area has been marked off with stakes and at least one or two business have moved their huts there. A large area on the rocky side of the square has been reserved for assembling a government. In fact, there is a large slab of rock there that looks good for eventually building some kind of government structure. Maybe some 'palatial' type of hut thing, maybe made of stone.
Coming right along in my mind.
VHS Aug 26, 2002, 09:48 AM ok
Danke Aug 27, 2002, 08:01 PM Question for the group: how can we foster a strong urban center while in the ancient age? As we will not likely be able to build much in terms of civic improvements. Ideas?
Octavian X Aug 27, 2002, 08:51 PM First, we can build a new city asap. Start the worker improving the surrounding terrain. Also, pray that we don't starting in the middle of the jungle!
Later on in the game, I find the citys that grow large and properous when they haven't produced a settler in a long time (think one city challenges). It would be virtually impossible for us to build a stong city in the ancient age. With the AI's advantage, we'ed need to be cranking out the settlers, no cities excluded.
Danke Aug 28, 2002, 09:15 AM Yup, I think that may be likely, unless we use the first city at some point as a factory for spearman/swordsman/archer/horsemen. I think we will need to be creative in our approach to building an enjoyable city.
VHS Aug 29, 2002, 11:45 AM We need a city that produces lots of commerce. That way, we can install our compounds in the richest city.
Danke Aug 29, 2002, 06:47 PM Actually in the last game some of the best producing cities were not the ones you might think. My city (Elephantine) *cranked* on production, but was a relatively minor city otherwise. It is definitely something to keep an eye on.
WarriorZeus Aug 30, 2002, 07:26 AM any objections to me signing up?? if not let me in plz PLZ
Cyc Aug 30, 2002, 12:39 PM Danke, I'd like to join also. In response to your last question, I would suggest making the area safe from any hostilities. You might want to give the locals some way to feel united, with a sense of pride. And maybe something should be developed to enable these locals to take their minds off the strenuous work they do everyday, making them content or possibly even happy. Just my 2g.
Oh, and you might suggest having all the food gathered to be brought in to one location, like maybe that square area, to be stored and dispensed. Anything within the "stakes" belongs to the "city" as a whole.
Danke Aug 30, 2002, 01:52 PM Welcome WarriorZeus and Cyc!
Great ideas, Cyc! I'm looking forward to having an actual city :-)
