View Full Version : Does anyone else play non-violent games?
aimeeandbeatles Jan 04, 2009, 10:55 AM I play 'em. Mostly business simulations, a few horse games (although a lot of them are buggy, there's a few good ones.) And I definately like Civ -- I prefer the newer ones 'cos you don't have to go to war to win. At least in theory, not so in practice.
Seems some people here think 'cos I don't like blood and guts, I'm not a "real" gamer.
carmen510 Jan 04, 2009, 10:57 AM I've played business and city-building games. When you say violence, do you mean all types of violence (Cartoon, Civ figures battling, etc.) or just bloody/gory violence like most Mature FPS's?
aimeeandbeatles Jan 04, 2009, 11:09 AM Mostly bloody violence. I mean, I play one game where I'm stuck on an island and have to kill animals to survive, it's just I can't stand blood and... ugh.
Maniacal Jan 04, 2009, 01:27 PM Eh the blood in games is pretty weak, but I felt the same way when I was 13. Now the grittier and bloodier the better :p (Being a 19 year old male helps though, yay for tetosterone!).
I think the reason people look down on those avoiding violent gmes is because a lot of non-violent games are really bad or no where as good as some more violent games. Or at least they think of the bad ones first like Barbie's Horses or something. Course this isn't true, SimCity series for example.
Some non-violent games I am thinking of;
Sort of Risk-like time waster game that is quite fun.

The Europa Universailels and Victoria series, which have warfare, it is somewhat abstracted and especially victoria can be played without a lot of war. It is probably less violent than Civ. Crusader Kings is more about building a dynasty than controlling a nation (which can be a mental hurdle to get over).
Both morrowind and Oblivion's violence is pretty weak imo (more so morrowind) and both likely have mods to remove blood and can be played quite non-violently.
Portal, okay it has turrets with guns that shoot at you but I don't remember there being blood and the turrets are easily disabled. But it's a first person puzzle game really.
Possibly Darwinia, as the characters are all electronic sprites living in a virtual world (I can't get it to work on my comp though >.>)
Oregon Trail off Home of the Underdogs. Although it does require hunting.
Wikipedia article, but I doubt it will help much.

aimeeandbeatles Jan 04, 2009, 01:36 PM Well, more like shooting at people is what I don't like. Killing them. Even injuring them. Although in Roller Coaster Tycoon I'd crash the coasters....
Maniacal Jan 04, 2009, 01:41 PM I think you would still like Portal though.
Heretic_Cata Jan 04, 2009, 01:43 PM Eh the blood in games is pretty weak, but I felt the same way when I was 13. Now the grittier and bloodier the better :p (Being a 19 year old male helps though, yay for tetosterone!).
It was the other way around for me (almost). When i was around 13 i was obsessed with violent games, the more gore the better. :D Now i'm meh toward it.
Esckey Jan 04, 2009, 09:04 PM I think I've spent more time playing non violent games like Civ, Col, Railroad Tycoon, Transport Tycoon and simcity then I have playing the violent games
azzaman333 Jan 04, 2009, 11:52 PM I don't think Guitar Hero or Rock Band are violent.
GoodGame Jan 04, 2009, 11:55 PM I play sudoku, and many an arcade game which is not bloody violence. The sudoku squares might feel violated however.
aimeeandbeatles Jan 05, 2009, 03:21 PM Horse games aren't as bad as lots of people make out -- they're just more....errr, girlish?
Although I don't really like gender stereotypes, shooting at people makes me physically ill.
rhawn Jan 05, 2009, 08:40 PM I'd be more comfortable answering if there was a list of some non-violent video games. I can think of Madden(as violent as football) and Rock Band. Most games even Mario involve killing something as an objective.
hossam Jan 05, 2009, 10:08 PM i play hello kitty island adventure :)
Dachs Jan 06, 2009, 01:18 AM I think you would still like Portal though.
Portal has shooting, of a sort. And definitely violence. Those turrets have such sweet voices...:p
Maniacal Jan 06, 2009, 01:21 AM Not really, you shoot portals at a wall, the turrets are violent but they only shoot at you and you don't see yourself usually. It's a pretty awesome game. ANd disabling the turrets by knocking them over is disabling the only guns.
Dachs Jan 06, 2009, 01:39 AM Not really, you shoot portals at a wall, the turrets are violent but they only shoot at you and you don't see yourself usually.
But there's shooting and violence involved, and if they shoot you enough times you die. And you're also actively attempting to disable them, as well as GlaDOS.
Maniacal Jan 06, 2009, 01:46 AM But there's shooting and violence involved, and if they shoot you enough times you die. And you're also actively attempting to disable them, as well as GlaDOS.
Yes but it's not all that violent, and you are not shooting at humans or living creatures, nothing that should "turn off" aimeeandbeatles. No matter how much of a ssimulation of sentience GlaDOS and the turrets may have they are still machines.
There's a demo availiable on Steam, so she can try that, and there are plenty of maps without turrets anyways.
LightFang Jan 06, 2009, 02:16 AM Portal is fun.
I agree, even though it's violent in a way, it's not really. There isn't like blood spilling everywhere, and when you die, it's not like you see your entrails dropping out of your body onto the floor in excruciating pain and detail.
Maniacal Jan 06, 2009, 03:01 AM What game does show your entrails dropping out of you?
azzaman333 Jan 06, 2009, 04:15 AM If you die, there certainly is blood in Portal.
But if you don't plan on much dying, there isn't much blood!
Chieftess Jan 06, 2009, 04:42 PM a few horse games (although a lot of them are buggy...
heh, am I the only one that got a chuckle out of the wording of that phrase? (horse & buggy) :p
Many simulation and card/puzzle games are obviously non-violent.
Civfan333 Jan 06, 2009, 04:46 PM auditorium is non violent! unless you consider forcibly manipulating pixels to move in a certain direction.............
LightFang Jan 07, 2009, 12:17 AM What game does show your entrails dropping out of you?
I don't know, but that'd be pretty awesome, now that I think of it.
teccuk Jan 27, 2009, 05:50 AM I think I've spent more time playing non violent games like Civ, Col, Railroad Tycoon, Transport Tycoon and simcity then I have playing the violent games
Absolutely the same here. Although i enjoy the war elements of Civ and Medieval Lords and Stronghold, its the building stuff i really love :P
Danielos Jan 27, 2009, 10:46 AM Well, I´ve always prefered the empire-building aspects of the Civilization-games and rarely start any wars myself. I prefer to behave like a country I would rule if it was for real, that is, being friendly and cooperative...
Other peaceful games are of course all my adventure games like Day of the Tentacle, Sam&Max Hit the Road, Full Throttle, Longest Journey, Gabriel Knight and the Monkey Island and Broken Sword games.
Also, I like tycoon-games like Sim City 4, Roller Coaster Tycoon and Zoo Tycoon, and of course the Sims-games. Finally there are the sports games NHL and FIFA 2004 and Championship Manager 03/04.
So, I come in peace... :D
Maniacal Jan 27, 2009, 11:37 AM Hmm, seems suspicious. I spy check Danielos.
*FLOOSH*
Ah, not a spy I see, carry on then.
