What are the 3 most underrated and 3 most overrated games you have played?

My pick:

Underrated:

* Battlefield Vietnam
* Hearts of Iron 2
* Rise of Nations

Overrated:

* Grand Theft Auto: Vice City
* Far Cry
* Roller Coaster Tycoon 3

The most underrated is Pong. it is a classic. it was my first game console back in the 70s. The console had four different pong games built-in with two rotating knob controllers.

The most overrated game is golf. You're hitting a frakking ball with a metal stick and you have the audacity to expect the audience to be quiet while you do that. get a life.

I'm sure this forum will back me up well enough on this, but Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri is undoubtedly one of the most underrated, and one of the greatest, games ever.

Civ 3. There is no strategic depth to the game whatsoever. The extent to which you are successful in the game is precisely the extent to which you are willing to subject yourself to tedious micro. Alpha Centauri out-classes it in every conceivable way. I'd give civ 3 a 5/10, Alpha Centauri a 9.5/10

I'm not sure Oblivion, Spore and WOW are what I would call "underrated". They got stellar reviews and huge sales.

I don't know, I think they're pretty fun. Yes, the plots are ridiculous, but the action is what keeps me coming back.

Personally, I think most of the Final Fantasy games are overrated. Sure, most of them are decent games, but a lot of people seem to think of them as earth-shattering games of great cultural importance. I've seen used copies of Final Fantasy 7 go for anywhere from $40-$70 dollars. I paid, I think, $15 for a copy about two years ago; a fair price, and I'd say that's still about what the game is worth.

As far as underrated games, I'd like to mention Caesar III or any of its clones. City-building games are plenty of fun, and I personally find the mission-based play helps keep me more focused than open-ended games such as SimCity (which is also great, mind you).

I remember a period in the early 2000's where I played almost nothing but these games, Caesar, then Pharaoh, then Zeus... it was really cool, and my gf liked them a lot too. Once you understood how it worked and how to set up an efficient city it was a lot of fun.

Simtower and Simant were both amazing games.

To this day I wish they could adapt those old games into newer and more complex versions. I still dream of the day when I can amass an ant army to invade a bee hive or battle against wasp armies...

This needs a qualifier. Wrestling games suck as is. Wrestling games in which all fighters are caricatures of you and your roommates is awesome. Especially when you contrive everyday situations into premises for a match like they do.

I loved that game. I only thing that it lack IMHO was some sort of 'aggressive' military campaign. As it is some army just sits around most of the time. Still a very good game.


I don't have a lot of experience with PC games because for the longest time my computer couldn't play new stuff. Of the things that haven't been mentioned, my choice for under-rated game is Descent. That was an awesome game. Though some of the level features were underutilized in the real game for the sake of realism, some of the user-created levels are absolutely fiendish puzzles with overlapping hallways and one way walls that really mess with your head. :D

I disagree, as the only part of the game that should be hyped is the combat (which is a lot better than in most other games), the horses (most games seem to have problems with horses), and the moddability, and they all live up to the hype.

Edit2:Gal Civ for Overrated. I like to play it when I just want to build an empire, but it is just too simple and too easy. I don't think I've ever had another computer declare war on me at normal difficulty, and you can't even invade until a goodly way through the game (unless you beeline planetary invasion)

Unless you're talking Doom 3, you're too much of a youngster to recognize what an exponentional leap and a mind bomb Doom was when it came out. Before that people were playing Wolfenstein. Doom was like the first 2.5D game (it was still 2d, but it was drawn to look like the levels had a z-axis). And totally not about killing aliens or zombies. It had freaking 666 demonz and pentagramz! And the first videogame with politically incorrect use of a chainsaw! And the first multiplayer deathmatch!

For overrated i'd probably go with the Halo series. Run of the mill shooter in my book. And for underrated i'll pick the STALKER games. They're both brilliant, yet they never quite got the attention they deserved. Although i think they sold fairly decent in europe.

Age of Empires and Civilization are f-ing legends of gaming. There's no way they could be considered as underrated.

They're legends for hardcore PC gamers. Console gamers and those who do both PCs and Consoles don't care about either series much.

As I said, Civilization is OVERRATED at this site, but underrated at pretty much every other site.

I forgot that Soul Calibur series is underrated.

And as for Ocarina of Time (somebody's going to bring it up!), I own the GameCube version and it most definetely deserves its praise. Anybody who doesn't say it's one of the 10 best games ever is seriously kidding themselves!

Sorry, GameFAQs is my main site, and there Final Fantasy and Legend of Zelda rule.

Final Fantasies are not overrated. Except by GameFAQs, but not much.

Maybe Super Mario World is slightly overrated, but it deserves almost all of its praise.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl is overrated by most of you guys, but not on most websites. I think so far SSBB has won ONE game of the year award (versus Mario Galaxy's thirty-something), and not even a whole lot of Wii GotYs either. It's proof that Nintendo is a primarily SINGLE-PLAYER company, and that Smash is getting too familiar among the crowd.

Most overrated: Spore (and any game that has a DRM program embeded to limit the # of installs/reinstalls)

I think that SimCopter is a bit underrated -- ok, so the graphics suck, but I like the gameplay. One of the helicopter games not involving violence (unless you use the Apache copter to blow up things -- that's cool!)

I think the Sims and the Sims 2 are HORRIBLY overrated. I got bored with it in an hour.

Hellgate: London is by far the most underrated game. I miss the servers already :cry:

I've heard cries that Tabula Rasa, though with flaws, was underrated and its servers will be, or already have been shut down. Although I'll probably buy the Collector's Edition so I can resell it for an exorbitant fee. ;)

Screw Mario Party, Mario Sports, and Wii Sports.

F-Zero has been a dormant franchise for a good while, and the only reason most people care about that series is Super Smash Bros.

Mario Kart and Super Smash Bros. are slowly just recycling themselves.

Overrated: Donkey Kong Country trilogy, Every Final Fantasy after VII, Tetris, Every Sports and Music Game, Super Smash Bros. series
